Our buddy Bink reports over at bink.nu that there is a new build of Windows Server Codenamed "Longhorn" has been made available to testers. This will be the first beta build of v6 kernel since the finished Windows Vista that released to manufacturing on Nov 30th carrying the build number of 6000.

From Bink's web site: "There’s a new build up on the ongoing Microsoft Longhorn Server beta program. It’s the next build up from 5600 which was available back in August. This current build, 6001.16406 will be on Microsoft Connect very soon."

Update Source: ActiveWin

Microsoft released the December CTP of the Longhorn Server on the Microsoft Connect Website. Microsoft released both regular and checked builds, symbols and WDK. The versions range between 1.6 - 2.4 GB.

Isn't it called 'Centro' now though?

Nope, Centro is something else.

I remember i had to complete a short opt-in survey to determine your 'suitability' for contiuning to test Longhorn - I didnt get a confirmation email but i do have access to the new builds now.

I think the criteria was you had to be at least 13 years old or younger...and master 'cut and paste' of emails and provide leaks...LOL

When testing out Vista, I was able to test out Longhorn Server as well.
However, it seems that I no longer have access to Longhorn Server to download the latest build.
It just shows links to Vista.

how do I apply for longhorn server participation again?

I am in the "Windows Vista, Longhorn Server and IE 7 Beta" and I see this build ...downloading now.

p.s. this specific program was part of the IIS7 Beta I think.

Just curious... are people going to try to do what they did with win2k3 to longhorn server? (try to make a gaming platform out of it due to it's high performance standards and no special goodies added to make it bulk) I remember how everyone was raving OH i got server 2k3, it's super with games. I'm curious to see if this server edition might even be more impressive than Vista's performance (despite the fact this server has no media goodies etc)

Too bad they don't sell this version to the public even if it might cost a million, I had fun with 2k3. I could bench with "slightly" better results... just slightly, but it was exciting.

Server doesn't include Aero (at least out of the box ), so I would imagine people will want Vista (regular desktop Vista) for the pretty UI.

Well, Server doesn't need Aero heh. I would care more about stability over pretty-ness
