Apple and HP are both poised to introduce notebooks in 2007 that use LED-backlit LCDs, according to new rumors. Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes reports that the two computer makers are expected to launch these notebooks in the second quarter of the year.

LED-backlit displays have slowly been making their way into consumer electronics lately, with Samsung leading the way with some of their LED HDTVs—the company has also claimed that all of their LCDs will be LED-based by 2008. However, LED-backlit displays have been criticized for their high power consumption (and often higher cost), therefore making them less suitable for portable use.

What's so great about LED backlit LCDs?

LED back lit LCD should use less power, not more, than traditional LCD. And it's also brighter.

Apple switch to LED back lit for their 5.5 generation Ipod from the 5th, and gained significant battery life because of it.

The current back draw is cost, but that should change with quantity and time.

Then how come "However, LED-backlit displays have been criticized for their high power consumption...".
Now I am really confused.

LED displays that offer better color reproduction and uniformity throughout the display, as well as improved contrast ratio and brightness uniformity

And Toshiba/Canon is going to deliver SED - based displays in 2008 which has even better color reproduction and contrast ratios.

Quite frankly, DigiTimes isn't the best source, especially regarding rumours.

They certainly aren't set to introduce LED notebooks, as it's a mere unconfirmed rumour.

Exactly. "Rumor: " should come at the beginning of the title so as to alleviate confusion.

When talking about Apple, it's almost a certainty it's a rumour anyways.

LEDs can have superior spectrums to current backlight technology.
As for power consumption they should be higher, unless you have very nifty power management.

I would wager this is just a cross-over period to make implementation easier in the future for when LED/OLED technology improves. There should be no reason to even need the LCD when things get done properly.

I certianly wouldn't buy a notebook with this technology in it currently.
