a) Most people don't know about TOR etc.
b) Stops people being directed to these websites maliciously
c) The sites would go out of existence if more countries did this.
d) The "Yet another pointless 'effort'" argument is getting boring.

I was mainly trying to imply that this will not do anything to stop those who really want to get access to such material. They will find their ways. It'd better to actually work against the people/criminals who produce such material, than waste time tying to actually use censorship to counter this.

it's not about finding. it's about sharing illegal content.
the webservers and it's owners are being caught using this law.
and hopefully the ISPs + hosts get frightened and audit their client's websites.

ISPs should take this a step further and use the same technology to ban warez sites, etc..

This comment is not directed at you but instead is intended for everyone that argues the obvious (because you're all correct): that it's better to go after the source (the people creating this garbage) than the sites where these people find this stuff.

You have to remember that enacting this law does not mean that police departments are suddenly going to take a break and quit hunting these sick people down. What this accomplishes is a sort of narrowing of the haystack, so to speak. Instead of battling to take down a seemingly endless list of mirror sites, they can now focus on finding the sites that originate these materials and the criminals that produce and distribute them.

Italian authorities as well as authorities across many countries (even outside of Europe) have and will continue to work together to fight the criminals that operate these sites regardless of where they operate them from.

Well, I think making ISPs block child porn is a good idea in itself, however, if this is allowed then a door would be opened for other censorship. After this, someone might try to make ISPs block satanic cult sites, then warez sites, then ISPs would be required to report any suspicious traffic, like bittorrent, and so on. The real question you have to ask is WHY some people like child porn. Once you have that nailed down, then work on the solution to help those people.

So is making ISPs block chid porn a good idea? ..... YES
Should they do it? ............................................... NO

I believe in freedom from censorship also, but you should at least extend your exceptions to include pro-terrorism sites, racism sites, illegal hacking communities, and sites that illegally host copyrighted music/software. Then what we'll be left with is a free internet...

The child-porn and child abuse laws are very silly. For example you can be put to jail if you have sex or play with girl who's only a week younger than you. It's just nonsense!

Why we can dump child-* laws? Because we already have other laws for that!
We already have laws for RAPE, KIDNAPPING, CAUSING HARM, filming and distributing content without approval of people involved in it. Also there are laws about pornography. We don't need any other laws.
