Italy has introduced a new law requiring Internet service providers to block child pornography Web sites within six hours of being told to do so, the communications ministry said on Tuesday. The decree, which comes into force almost immediately, requires Internet providers to set up a system that blocks child pornography Web sites from being viewed soon after the providers are notified of their existence.

"The decree reinforces the fight against child pornography and the exploitation of minors through the Internet," Communications Minister Paolo Gentiloni said in a statement. Italy's penal code includes severe punishment for the distribution and publication of child pornography.

Yet another pointless 'effort' by the politicians to get some votes out of their constituents?

TOR anyone? Or any other similar solution for that matter ..

a) Most people don't know about TOR etc.
b) Stops people being directed to these websites maliciously
c) The sites would go out of existence if more countries did this.
d) The "Yet another pointless 'effort'" argument is getting boring.

I was mainly trying to imply that this will not do anything to stop those who really want to get access to such material. They will find their ways. It'd better to actually work against the people/criminals who produce such material, than waste time tying to actually use censorship to counter this.

it's not about finding. it's about sharing illegal content.
the webservers and it's owners are being caught using this law.
and hopefully the ISPs + hosts get frightened and audit their client's websites.

ISPs should take this a step further and use the same technology to ban warez sites, etc..

I would have thought/hoped that this was already a law in all countries.
#2.1 Sn4k36 on 04 Jan 2007 - 16:14
yeah you would think...
(1 reply) #3 FloatingFatMan on 04 Jan 2007 - 16:36
Personally, I'd think the ISP's would want to block such sites IMMEDIATELY... They shouldn't be waiting to be forced to block them with such laws!!
#3.1 RealFduch on 06 Jan 2007 - 10:20
It's dumb cause it cannot be done.

If I ask you to reply to my posts IMMEDIATELY after I post them, can you do it?
#4 mujjuman on 04 Jan 2007 - 16:39
i thought taht there were already laws on this in most western countries.

There are laws forbidding child pornography in most western countries. Yet, how can you apply Italy law to a site web located outside of Italy or Europe??
Preventing access to child pornography web sites is a good thing but taking down the child abusing mafias or organizations is an even better thing.

This comment is not directed at you but instead is intended for everyone that argues the obvious (because you're all correct): that it's better to go after the source (the people creating this garbage) than the sites where these people find this stuff.

You have to remember that enacting this law does not mean that police departments are suddenly going to take a break and quit hunting these sick people down. What this accomplishes is a sort of narrowing of the haystack, so to speak. Instead of battling to take down a seemingly endless list of mirror sites, they can now focus on finding the sites that originate these materials and the criminals that produce and distribute them.

Italian authorities as well as authorities across many countries (even outside of Europe) have and will continue to work together to fight the criminals that operate these sites regardless of where they operate them from.

This kind of law is ok for child porn but anything APART from child porn could be a really bad thing. I mean could change the entire face of the internet.

Don't worry, we're not in china.

Well I'm not anyway.

USA is not very far from China :-)

Good job Italy...could the whole EU do the same soon?

I don't see the point of this. They should go after the people that make it instead of trying to block sites (potential censorship). What's next? Political sites? Anti government groups? I say "no thanks" to a big brother on the internet...

Well, I think making ISPs block child porn is a good idea in itself, however, if this is allowed then a door would be opened for other censorship. After this, someone might try to make ISPs block satanic cult sites, then warez sites, then ISPs would be required to report any suspicious traffic, like bittorrent, and so on. The real question you have to ask is WHY some people like child porn. Once you have that nailed down, then work on the solution to help those people.

So is making ISPs block chid porn a good idea? ..... YES
Should they do it? ............................................... NO

I believe in freedom from censorship, but when it's CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, hell no. Block that @#$%, find those bastards, and jail them. Satanic crap is satanic crap, but exploiting children in such a filthy manner is horrible.
#9.1 +Lt-DavidW on 05 Jan 2007 - 23:37
I believe in freedom from censorship also, but you should at least extend your exceptions to include pro-terrorism sites, racism sites, illegal hacking communities, and sites that illegally host copyrighted music/software. Then what we'll be left with is a free internet...

You are too close-minded.
What they call child porn =/= exploiting children.
When I was little my parents made some photos of me plaing in the bath. NUDE!!!!!!! Oh NO!!!!!!
Do you understand that my mother can be put in jail because of those laws?

The child-porn and child abuse laws are very silly. For example you can be put to jail if you have sex or play with girl who's only a week younger than you. It's just nonsense!

Why we can dump child-* laws? Because we already have other laws for that!
We already have laws for RAPE, KIDNAPPING, CAUSING HARM, filming and distributing content without approval of people involved in it. Also there are laws about pornography. We don't need any other laws.
#10 prick on 05 Jan 2007 - 06:14
this should be implemented in all counties immediately not just Italy.
