Intel’s Quad-Core Chips Set to Be More Affordable

In order to further solidify its positions of the market of high-performance microprocessors and popularize quad-core chips, Intel Corp. will sell its highly-anticipated central processing units (CPUs) with four processing engines at significantly lower price-points than it so far has been expected.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor, which is expected to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in several days, will cost $531 in 1000-unit quantities, not $850 as previously anticipated, several media reports claim. Its price point will make the quad-core processor just $1 more expensive compared to the current price of Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 chip, which has a bit higher clock-speed.

Technology is so fast... They introduced Core Duo recently, then Core 2 Duo, and then Core Quad... but quad processors exist since dozens of years, they should have introduced it before Core Duo IMO (and obviously never introduce Core Duo). Intel is on fire these days...

I have a dual core Dell E510 with 1 gig of ram that I develop on at work. I swear to you that I can't tell that it is a dual core. This crap has NO zip to it

i hope these things are worth it (ie the bus dont saturate as the cores are put to full use) coz then i'll have to get one! tax returns are pretty useful for us geeks, eh?

That's because you have a Pentium D, which was not such a good processor. I just upgraded to a Core 2 Duo 6300, and noticed a huge difference compared to the old Pentium 4 3Ghz.

The depression is just to much on new chipsets. It doesn't make sense to buy a computer over $900 these days (fully loaded and with a monitor). You might be better off waiting until you find a dell price mistake on slickdeals or until the next "back to school" sale.

do we even have software that will use quad core? seriously....this is turning into the razor war between gillette and schick...instead of how many razors can you put on a stick, its how many cores can you slap on silicone

Do I honestly care about having the fastest CPU? No.

Do you know which CPU I am using? No.

Didn't AMD just release their quad core for something like $485? Yea, for competition.

I got a deal on the MB and 2 CPUs. Less than the prices of the 2 CPUs combined. Nice system although a bit (ok a lot) power hungry. 400+ watts at idle.

Can they match the X2 for Visual Studio & GCC/G++ performance? The Conroe isn't competitive when it comes to compiling, but if the Kensfield can make up for that by just doubling up, then I might have found myself a new processor. I really wouldn't mind the extra performance for Lancer's Vorbis encoders and p7zip.

I built two Core 2 Duo machines with the E6300 for my middle daughter and boy friend and they have impressive speed.

The Dell E510 didn't have an option for a Core 2 Duo processor.

hmm, I could take my brand new PS3 back if this is real but then again I would still have to spend another $500+ for the motherboard, ram, hard drives,etc. Intel is kicking ascii right now. Keep up the good work.

You get what you pay for. Dell, maybe a good CPU but what else is in the box.
