Adobe Systems has issued updates to fix security flaws in its Reader and Acrobat software that Secunia rated as "highly critical”. An attacker could remotely commandeer a computer via vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader, Acrobat Standard, Professional and Elements versions 7.0.8 and earlier. The flaw is not a huge problem as it does not affect the latest 8.0 version. According to Adobe, Adobe Acrobat 3D is also affected.
Outsiders could gain complete access to hard-disk drives via a malicious link that targets PDF files. Adobe recommends that Adobe Reader users upgrade to Reader 8 or alternatively install Tuesday's 7.0.9 version. Either way, a full installation is required as a patch is not available. Adobe noted that a full installation can be made available faster than a patch can.
