iPhone to cost around £595-£660

The Apple iPhone is going to dent your bank account a bit more than expected. The 4GB model will come in at a shade under £600 while the 8GB could be as much as £660 according to some early, pre-order prices on Amazon Germany [thanks Jan]. This compares to approximately £255 and £306 in the US.

When you’re finished choking you might also want to consider some of the other things that are taking the shine of the latest ‘hot’ mobile phone. Most of these are confirmed, while others fall into the ‘maybe’ category.
  • The iPhone will be 3G when it arrives in Europe but it will not arrive for a year – not the end of 2007 as expected.
  • It will be a closed device and will only run software released by Apple.
  • It will use Apple’s DRM software FairPlay which, ironically, no one thinks is fair, at all. This will stop users from playing anything other than music bought via iTunes.
  • Apple could win the right to use the iPhone name in Europe, thanks to a loophole says Outlaw.com.

Smartphones are more expensive to buy off the shelf, if this is the shelf price then via a provider would make it more appealing.

I hate all that DRM crap though, the Zune has it, the iPod has it.. so much for "sharing" in the digital age.

Not many music companies complained when we were living in a LP (Vinyl) and Tape (Cassette) world, did they?

That is a hell of a lot of money to spend on a phone that someone is probably going to steal of you.

No 3rd party applications will kill the "iPhone".

Does that mean it wont play MP3s or im thinking too much like the RIAA, and that actually it will only prevent DRM'd music purchased from other shops working.

No, this is pathetic FUD. Ripped CDs and any other mp3 content will play fine.

I agree, I can hardly see iTunes saying "You can't transfer this song because its an MP3"

I wouldn't trust Amazon to know the pricing. I don't see why Apple would either have decided yet or tell Amazon.
#3.3 C_Guy on 15 Jan 2007 - 16:44
Ahhh, FUD. Why form proper words to express yourself when you can just say fud?

To answer acnpt's question properly: You're right and wrong. You probably are locked into iTunes (shock) but iTunes will transfer MP3s and CD tracks to Apple's own audio format which, yup, supports their version of DRM (digital rights management).
#3.4 chris e boy on 15 Jan 2007 - 17:05
absolute rubbish.

of course it will play standard MP3s, just like the ipod does.

sensationalist journalism

(and no, you will not need to convert them to aac as the previous comment states)

I was on the fence about this phone but the "only runs Apple software" and "only plays music bought through iTunes" definitely did it for me.

Really? I had assumed so since iPods can. It'd be good to get confirmation, I guess. Would you happen to know how one would transfer phonebooks, etc. from a PC?

Hasn't been discussed, but its likely it would either use custom software or the built in Windows Address Book and/or Outlook which iPods and iTunes already support.

just confirms what a serious waste of money the iPhone is

if i cant play my legaly ownd cds that i convert to mp3s thne whats the point of this ? it just makes it a very expensive phone even with provider discounts.
#6.1 bobbba on 15 Jan 2007 - 16:12
I very much doubt that you won't be able to play your mp3's, I think the author is trying to state that it will not play music bought from other drm'd online stores which is the same as it is for every other DRM capable device.
#7 Fubar on 15 Jan 2007 - 16:10
lmao i dont think thewy want this product to do well at all , not with them prices lol

I wish people wouldn't automatically jump on 'stories' like they came from St Paul's own lips. Ignoring the fact the iPod came before the iTunes music store, would the iPod be the seller it is if you could only play music bought from the iTunes store? If it's the same FairPlay as the iPod it'll work the same as an iPod.

That price seems way off too. Apple's press release says $499/$599 depending on GB. While I don't see the price being at the exchange rate, I'd say £350/£450 depending on GB as top line. But as someone else pointed out, there'll be deals with service providers which will knock a serious dent off that price, eg £150 for the phone with a 12 month contract @ £30/mo. I would imagine the iTunes RiNGTONE store is already planned...

The rationale about not opening up the software is the same as with the iPod, ie probably not a lot of need to open it up to third parties for your average customer (99% of customers?). Plus when there's less to break, things are less likely to break. Since there is quite a lot of non-Apple iPod software out there I see no reason for the iPhone, if it sells, to have a similar choice of non-Apple software.

that $499 / $599 price though is already on a 2 year contract. So itws going to be more expensive on a 12month contract, and god knows how much on PAYG.
So in that case, the price quoted could be correct, as I would expect it to be around £600 on PAYG.

Ya but this is a US 2 year contract. Look at other phones in the US under contract, the discount given is pretty poor. I'd expect much higher discounts for a 2 year contract in Europe (just compare new phones available boths sides of the atlantic).

I was reading the engadget live blog during the keynote, and I was also astonished by the phone at first. But now looking at it outside the Steve Jobs halo effect it has on stage it shows that at least right now it has quite some defecits to other form factors. Of course the biggest things going for it are the interface, the touchscreen and Apple branding.
But the price most of all is what would make it in its current form not interesting to me at least.
I have a Nokia N73 phone, 3G, 3.2MP camera on the back and a VGA camera on the front, mini SD slot and Symbian operating system. The only feature I'm really missing on it is Wifi. I can get a 2GB mini SD card for around 50 euros and with a 2 year contract I paid 12 euros for my phone. Now the rumor on the iPhone is a $500 and $600 contract, without a contract the N73 runs at about 370 euros.
So at least by the current rumored prices, it is a great phone, but at least in my opinnion it's too expensive and too limited with the closed of platform. Symbian has tons of 3rd party apps, for example a software that makes my phone into a bluetooth webcam.

The UK Sunday Times quoted a price in the UK of around £260, no 3G admittedly, can't remember if it was the 4GB or 8GB model. Can't see Apple pricing it much more than current phones, many of which already have PDA functionality, cameras and mp3 players. There's only so much people will pay, if Apple want market share they will have to price competitively.

As for Apple's DRM, it already exists on the iPod. Hasn't stopped them selling millions of iPods to buyers who just rip CD's to mp3's, myself included. I wouldn't know the iTunes store if I tripped over it.

Expensive hardware and proprietary DRMed file format. I cannot honestly see Apple being so stupid as to repeat some of Sony's mistakes.

The Amazon page doesn't say anything about cell phone company, so the prices there are without SIM-Lock/Contract. Makes sense, normal price for a phone like that. Or you telling me other Phones/PDAs are cheaper?
#11.1 vacs on 15 Jan 2007 - 17:47
normal smart/PDA-phones are not only cheaper, but also offer many more features like 3G, flashmemory support, 3m pixel cameras, extendable keyboard, 3rd party software support, videocalling and no stupid DRM limitations.

They are also smaller and available for months. There is no single reason why anyone should buy a iPhone unless you are a Apple fetishist or like to spend big cash on useless things.
#12 LiGhTfast on 15 Jan 2007 - 16:59
Ummm no one in there right mind spend £600 on a phone, let alone something thats been crippled so much its crap.

/me pats symbian and wm5

£660?? Apple has just lost all the potential UK buyers of their $phone.

All companies are money hungry these days like Apple and Sony. And no I am not against Apple in any way as I have an iPod and love it, but this whole iPhone thing... I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon.
#13.1 Julius Caro on 15 Jan 2007 - 19:57
I refuse to believe that apple will let that happen. And taking amazon germany provisional price tags as a reliable source for UK prices is REALLY a bad idea

I'd love to know how much this phone actually costs to make...
#14.1 vacs on 15 Jan 2007 - 17:51
Apple is certainly making a decent profit on those phones. 600£ for a phone this limited is just crazy. Even the PS3 costs less than the iPhone.
#14.2 lbmouse on 15 Jan 2007 - 17:57
Just like many other products (video game systems, printers, etc), mobile phones themselves are normally loss leaders (key value items) that manufacturers hope will net a profit on the back-end via peripherals, software, perishables, and services. So, my guess is that Apple is not banking on the actual phone purchase to call this product a success since they're probably selling it at a loss.

As far as this phone, Apple has always been known to be very propriety and pro-DRM (aka anti-consumer), so the 'features' list on this phone doesn't surprise me, but it will definitely prevent me from owning one.

Apple have never (that I'm aware of) sold products at a loss, its possible they intend to for the first few iPhones, but I very much doubt its built into their business case for the iPhone, like it is for game consoles.

To be honest, its not really Apple's choice to use DRM or not - its a case of use it or don't sell music from the big publishers...
#15 Jaxkesa on 15 Jan 2007 - 17:59
(reply to 14.1) : Yea...I seem to remember the iPod costing like 50% what it retailed for. I can't beleive this thing costs £300/$300 - fancy screen or not.
#16 lerum on 15 Jan 2007 - 18:41
Apple! Read this!
£ != $
So that means $600 is really £305, not £600!
#17 Julius Caro on 15 Jan 2007 - 19:55
Amazon DE is taking pre orders for the iphone.
8gb = 1000 euro
4gb = 900 euro

That statement about fairplay ... is it going to be any different than the ipod, or we won't be able to play ANY mp3 we have at all??
(1 reply) #18 AthleticTrainer1981 on 15 Jan 2007 - 22:25
Interested in finding out how come the UK version will have 3g but the US version does not.
#18.1 HawkMan on 15 Jan 2007 - 23:15
Not sure, but I suppose it might be because the US uses a different type of 3G than Europe, and Apple choose touse the European Cell phone system since the majority of customers use that, wich is also why they're tied to cingular in the US, they're the only ones using the same system as Europe.
#19 eAi on 15 Jan 2007 - 23:01
THIS IS ALL SPECULATION

Can people realize that this has not come from Apple, or even been leaked from Apple (as far as I'm aware anyway), so I'd take it all with a very large pinch of salt.
#20 ThePitt on 15 Jan 2007 - 23:18
my cellphone cost 10% of that and I can do exactly the same. Play music, watch videos, browse the internet, chat, etc. We dont need more hype on this...
BTW NO DRM
We dont need ANY drm on our lives

theres some word, I forget what it is, it starts with a "p" and ends with an "oser", it describes those kinds of people as well as the people who bitch about Windows and how much Linux is better even though they never used Linux in their life, or the people who are only true fans to a band if they have a single this week.
#22 black_death on 16 Jan 2007 - 03:40
I dont mean to question all mighty Steve Jobs who uses Jesus as his bitch but if a cellphone costs that much you might as well buy a PDA that can do more, costs less, and isn't limited to one company and model. It's a cellphone that can play music, wow Ive never seen one of those before, oh but it has a touch screen I guess picking one of those 9 icons is such a hassle with a silly old "keyboard" but just in case you want to lets say send a text message or use the phones "advanced internet features" you get an on screen keyboard which is less comfortable to type on and slower to type with, hooray for innovation!!!!
#23 superhuman on 16 Jan 2007 - 05:54
I guess, I will let Steve to use it himself. Definitely, iPhone kills itself by the price, funtionalities, and possiblities

600.00 United Kingdom Pounds = 1,379.19 Canada Dollars

there is no way i would EVER pay ANYWHERE CLOSE to that much for a phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111eleven1111111

i thought Apple computers were expensive, this is a little ridiculous.....

if people were getting robbed for there $400 ipods...........and there $600 ps3's.............this thing costs more then twice as much and alot smaller........
