Microsoft have quietly released an update for Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. The update requires Windows Genuine Advantage validation and there is no change list available at the time of posting.

Overview
Windows Media Player 11 offers great new ways to store and enjoy all of your digital media. It's easier than ever to access all of your music, video, pictures, and recorded TV on your computer. Play it, view it, organize it, and sync it to a portable device for enjoying on the go, or share with devices around your home - all from one place. Windows Media Player 11 is designed to work with all versions of Windows XP with Service Pack 2, including Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional N.

WGA. Yep. That would be it. Me, I'm using Media Player Classic for everything except DVD (PowerDVD). Screw WMP!

Hum seem this one is faster.

Because you just rebooted? Otherwise, it's just your imagination, since if you look in the WMP program directory, you'll see that only files involved in setup/configuration were updated.

The program itself was not, so it's exactly the same as before.

Any chance the update manager within WMP will handle this so as not to have to download the entire instalaltion package again..?

It's good to note that the new updater in WMP11 just uses Windows Update to check. I was delivered an update just now, when I checked manually.

WMP = bloated. I'll take Winamp for most of my playback needs, thank you!
#5.1 thenay on 16 Jan 2007 - 16:27
That's what I use too
#5.2 xxdesmus on 16 Jan 2007 - 16:27
wow, that was useful and on topic.

A change log would be nice Microsoft?

I just manually checked from inside WMP and it's not seeing the update yet ...

<-- heads off to check Win Update.

Bloated? My Winamp directory is 20.4MB. WMP directory: 7.86MB...

Keep in mind that many of WMP's features are taken directly from XP's (like CD Burning) while Winamp implements them from scratch.

Also, take skins and plugins into consideration.

Maybe they finally got rid of the white markings on the top left and right cornor....

No, Sorry.

I use Winamp and WMP. I have an Urge subscription, so I use WMP to play most of those files and all and use Winamp for playing radio and other programs. And I like it that way, really.

To be honest, I like WMP10 better. The Vista black glass isn't the best way to do glass, alot of nice features in WMP10 (one button disappear of playlist and such without going full screen, easier playlist handling, etc) disappeared, I prefer the more classic play controls (having it in the center is pointless, and the stop button is just "there", it doesn't fit), and I'm not the biggest fan of built in DRM. The WMP 11 organization features are nice, but I'm an organized person, and I have everything organized in windows, so the WMP11 organization features are pointless.

Agreed. I don't use the "My Music" folder, I have everything set up my own way and WMP just has to play along. Perhaps the one better thing in v.11 over v.10 is the dynamic library. I set it to watch a certain folder and the instant I delete or add files I see the changes right there in my WMP library. No having to re-add all my files. I don't know how it was for everyone else by I could never get the watch folders setting to work in v.10...it would update maybe 3 new songs (out of 20 or so) and then stop.

I guess I'm over the v.11 UI now...

Thanks for the update

Im using Windows Media Player 10 and satisfied with it, to hell with 11 on XP - it doesnt match the Windows XP user interface if its life depended on it.

That's because all the new apps from MS are based on the Vista Guidelines. Like IE7, WMP11, OneCare, and more.
