Regardless of how you look at Jobs’ line regarding OS X on the phone, you’ll be interested to know that he was referring to good old (by that I mean the unreleased) version 10.5. Only the best from Apple, right? According to report published Thursday, some version of OS X 10.5 “Leopard” will be on the iPhone which is slated for shipping in June 2007.
"Everything I've learned (both in official briefings and 'you and I never spoke, all right?' sort of discussions) says that it truly does run Leopard, the upcoming 10.5 OS that will be released for the Macintosh late in the spring," said Mac columnist Andy Ihnatko, writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, after spending 45 minutes with the iPhone.
According to Ihnatko, all user interface animations seen during public demos of the device "come courtesy of Leopard's Core Animation suite." He also mentioned the device sports the "most beautiful freakin' display" he's ever seen on a cellphone of PDA "in range of color and level of detail." He also notes that the device’s virtual keyboard "is a huge improvement over the mechanical thumbpads" found on many competing smart phones.

Whoa I can't wait to see what the desktop version will look like.
Can we avoid going all digg-y on the every single tidbit/rumor regarding the iphone for a few months, you know, when it is due to come out and we'll have all the answers?
You have to remember though that this is a top end phone so it's obviously not going to be cheap.
(If only they made budget hardware....)
I agree I'm not too good at playing games (hopefully, if you can) on a cell phone. And I'm not too good at browsing the internet on a 3.5 inch screen either. Movies, anyone?
differences between the basic level and the version to be released will only have additional functionalities in the areas other than handling application programs and rendering the objects.
i think apple wans to compete with MS in mobile operating sector. im predecting that they will license this version of their OS to other mobile manufacturers in the years to come as MS is doing it now.

Who the heck cares if it runs even 2 different versions of OS X or XI or XIII if it is locked down and you can;t install applications that you want?
I am quite skeptical about virtual keyboard being better than real keyboard. There is the issue of feedback that one gets only through real keys. But I guess we'll see.
Really Job's attitude of "you dont want a PC do you" sounds a bit absurd. No of corse we dont all want a pc but that doesnt mean we wouldnt want to add functionality to the phone. Ahh well.

Personally, I can't wait to play with it, but I am going to have to try to resist the urge to order one as soon as they're available. I suspect we'll be seeing unlocked ones via eBay or elsewhere pretty soon after they debut. I've been living contract free (with Cingular) for over three years now, and I'd like to keep it that way.
As for the keypad, I can type pretty effectively on the touch-screen keyboard on my Tungsten's calculator, and rarely use the stylus with the PDA in general. And I know Apple is going to get something as "key" (sorry, bad pun) as the virtual keyboard right, since they're making such a big deal about it.

Windows Mobile, actually, but some (most) still class it as Windows.
Oh, and the whole on screen keypad thing -- its not all that great, as someone mentioned, tactile feeling of a keypad (difference between it and a keyboard people) with the response is greatly unappreciated -- when you go to press a number on a screen, it just doesnt feel right.
its like using an ATM with touch screen as opposed to the hard buttons down the side -- feels awkward and you dont know if you pressed it hard enough or not.
Either way, i'm barely impressed.

seriously... oh and: DivX/XviD doesn't have to be illegal.
btw: my nokia n-gage which is like 2.5 years old (Symbian OS Series60) plays Xvid/DivX either, it may also run Gameboy/GBC, SNES and i guess even SM emus... but just throwing that in.
oh and in fact... the fact they put OS X on the iPhones is quite exciting, its even more exciting due to Core Animations, but it gets less exciting as since i may NOT run advanced system apps, run the actual interface, run Mac-apps, etc... I wish that was possible...
Oh and the iPod feature is a joke, it will only playback DRM-ed stuff... I mean... WTF, sometimes stuff isn't buyable in iTunes/already got it on non-protected CDs/is legally downloadable without DRM/just play FREE
if that wouldnt be, and I could have more GIGs on that baby, I'd not buy an iPod this summer, but get an iphone INSTEAD, which i'll buy anyways, but just not for using the ipod feature, but to call, I need a new phone anyways, and the iPhone looks pretty well and smart appart from those disadvantages.

seriously that guy that to go out a bit more, in europe nokia have display of 352 x 416 pixels, 35 x 41 mm in a mere 2.1" thats far more impressive.
and anything they say IF runs the same core, still its cripple you can't do everything you can on MAC oS X than Mac OS mobile and its closed TOO.
It's kinda like linux on your computer vs. linux on a portable device.

But still the fact that its leopard really makes it better over a phone based on tiger I mean itll have a new version of Mail and System Re- I mean the time machine thing, itll probably have itunes since going all the way home to buy music is too much hassle nowadays, oh right and all those advanced graphics you need for a few hundred pixels of display, I mean honestly what the hells the point in a phone if you cant poke an icon and make it jump up and down, might as well just use a landline. If it truely is based on OSX though then I guess the users will have to pay for updates, oh well what do you expect from a $700 phone?
Seriously though I think its great that the phone uses Leopard, I hope I can upgrade my toaster to Leopard, roasting bread with the old version of Safari is so lame.
