Nick White, Product Manager at Microsoft working on the Windows Vista launch team and Featured Communities leader has posted up the pricing for the Anytime Upgrade option available from within Windows when you buy a version of Vista lesser than "Ultimate".

On January 30th Windows Anytime Upgrade will allow customers to purchase and download a digital key to upgrade to a more feature-rich edition of Windows Vista. The user will then complete the upgrade process by inserting the Windows Vista DVD that came with their PC or with their retail purchase of Windows Vista. The program will be available in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan.

The pricing is as follows:
  • Home Basic --> Home Premium: $79
  • Home Basic --> Ultimate: $199
  • Home Premium --> Ultimate: $159
  • Business --> Ultimate: $139
Microsoft have also launched the Windows Vista Family Discount, as posted here earlier in the week. This offer applies to the US & Canada only, here's how that works:
  • Buy a retail copy of Windows Vista Ultimate (full or upgrade version)
  • Between 30 January – 30 June, order up to two copies of Windows Vista Home Premium online
  • Pay only $49.99 for each copy of Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Valid in North America (US and Canada)
  • On 30 January, go here for details; we've also a special site for our French-speaking customers.

As usual, UK is missing it out...

Don't feel left out, your friends down under are being left out too. Us Australians haven't even got the TV-Guide for Media Center yet...

But Microsoft's lack of caring for other countries is making me look for dodgey (but not illegal) ways of obtaing Vista copies for my Mother's and Brother's PCs.

Pardon me but when did the UK stop being a part of Europe????????

Hardly a good offer though, is it?

If the EU didn't sue them to hell and back, and our country wasn't run by tax-heavy idiots - Microsoft might give a crap.

It's not about Microsoft not caring about the EU/UK... it's about Microsoft only caring for the US, whilst sometimes including Canada. For an international company it is quite shocking the way Microsoft behaves sometimes.

Problem is tho, you are comparing upgrade versions to the full version + Anytime upgrade. To qualify for an upgrade you must have a full version of the Vista version you want to upgrade. You can't upgrade from an upgrade

While we're talking about upgrading, can you use the upgrade disc from an OEM version of XP? And If you can, I take it after the upgrade, you will still have an OEM license, so cannot upgrade the motherboard or whatever?

Lets see Full Home $199 plus it going cost you $79 just upgrade to Home Premium = $278 when Full ver Home Premium only cost $239 so if you go that there way it up cost you $39 more then full ver that you buy at store so how you fig you save anthing.
But guest if was a OEM PC upgrade which all ready has perinstall which you pay any way then that some what a good deal.
But then againe I would never by a OEM PC any way.

So question. If I have a legit copy of Business and upgrade to Ultimate, can I use Business on a different PC?
#5.1 Doli on 19 Jan 2007 - 20:21
I think your old key will be invalid after the upgrade.

Not bad if i get my free Business in the mail from it would only cost me $139 to go Ultimate. I want Ultimate for MCE but i may hold off and see what other PVR programs come out then I will see if I need to upgrade.

wow, that's still too expensive...

The upgrade cost has been dicussed numerous times on Neowin. Must we continue
to beat this to death to for the purpose of having a perpetual Vista headline.
Move on.
