Details of the European PS3 launch have been officially unveiled by Sony. The console will only be available in the premium 60GB model at launch, and will retail for 599EUR and 425GBP. Sony expects that 1 million units will be made available for the territory. The 20GB model may follow later in the year if consumer demand is high enough.

Over 30 game titles will be available for the European launch, either through a physical disc, or online via the Playstation network. These will include Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Formula One Championship Edition and Ridge Racer. Downloadable games available will be Gran Turismo HD Concept, Tekken: Dark Resurrection as well as a plethora of puzzle games.

The sixaxis controller will retail for £34.99 in the UK, while HDMI, AV and Component cables will retail for £17.99 each. In the press release Sony said “Concurrent with the European launch, a new System Update to further enhance the entertainment potential of PS3 will be issued.”

While the price, lack of freebies, and delayed launch may be a kick in the teeth for some consumers, the lack of a stellar football game seems an insane omission when releasing the game into such a soccer orientated culture.

So it will cost over £500 for a PS3, 1 game and an extra controller. You can buy a car for that. Good luck sony - surely it would have been sensible to sell the 20Gb, cheaper, and only release the 60gb version if demand is high enough, rather than the other way around?
#2.1 Nighthawk-F117 on 24 Jan 2007 - 23:45
Would be a pretty ****ty car though. :p

no it wouldnt, you can get some right nice little cars for £500!, admitedly it probably wouldnt have an MOT but still! lol
#3 hotdog963al on 24 Jan 2007 - 23:38
And to think I was considering getting one of these!
I was a hardcore sony fanboy until this.

It's not that bad a price when you think of what you actually get.
Dedicated Blu-Ray players retail for double this.
#4.1 +NeoFlux on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:22
Again with the Blu-ray thing.

Britain has a low adoption rate on HDTV's, so many people won't be benefiting from it.
#4.2 djesteban on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:44
what if you use HD-DVD? huh? this nice little "addition" becomes worthless

Ermm, Not exactly sure why you said that since you ain't being forced to actually buy it...
#4.4 coolchan on 25 Jan 2007 - 02:15
Most European HDTVs are only 1366 x 768.

People are going to run into the 720p scaling issue, aren't they?

Oh, 23rd March 2007

Not releasing the 20GB, dude I have £14 in my bank. Sony do you think I am made of money or something?
#5.1 m-head on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:28
I have £1500....but regardless, none of it is going on a PS3. Wii, then 360. Right now I have no plans for a PS in my Wii60 combination. PSWii60. Lollerskates.

And I was thinking $600 for a console was bad enough... 836.23 USD? Wow am I glad I'm not a Sony fanboy in London. What a bunch of crap.
#6.1 m-head on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:30
However, $600 = £304. Might as well import, cheaper.

Although saying that, after the importing costs on all of the games, it would work out more.
#6.2 TRC on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:31
Isn't Sony doing their best to stop that? They went so far as to have Lik-Sang shut down (and I still hate them for it).
#6.3 cantstopwontstop on 25 Jan 2007 - 09:42
Math is not your strong point....

599 euros = 777.04 dollars.

Total rip off...

Reading comprehension is not your strong point. England uses the Pound and not Euro. Current exchange rate from British Pound to US Dollar is about $836. The writer references buyers in London, not the rest of Europe.
#6.5 Cleaver on 25 Jan 2007 - 20:22
Where was the reference to London? It says the UK. We don't all live in London!

And to be extra picky (as my Scot/Welsh/N. Irish friends usually pick up on this), but England is not the entire UK.

So true... $600 is already vastly overpriced, and $836 is totally ludicous
After even the Japan sales are getting worse and worse every time, they're really bloody stupid if they think they can rip off the Europeans even much more.
You must have the IQ of a brick (or have enough money to wipe your ass with it and not care) to buy this crap at such an exploitative price
#7 TRC on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:28
Normally I say the more competition the better, but I swear I hope this thing tanks.

they're joking right?
#8.1 drygnfyre on 25 Jan 2007 - 09:48
Their E3 presentation was a joke... This is their encore performance.
#9 Burnz316 on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:35
why is everyone still complaining about the price?

both 599EUR and 425GBP equal to around $1000AUD which is what we are ment to be paying for the PS3, but this has been known for months..

yeah the price is very expensive but if you can't afford one either wait for it to get cheaper or dont buy one..

edit: atleast sony are going to update the ps3 firmware for the euro launch..

heh, sony sound like they've almost admitted defeat already... i suppose they're taking into account that they're screwing us over with the price and massive delay.

i might import it if i get it though... it'll be cheaper, and the PS3 hasn't got region coding on games so i could buy games here (or did sony just say that and break their promise?)
#10.1 TRC on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:49
PS3 games are region free I believe, PS2 games and Blu-Ray movies are still locked if that's important to you.
#11 djesteban on 25 Jan 2007 - 00:42
god! that's so expensive... lul

i wish i could read the techie/gamer news from oct 08 so i can see how this ridiculous excuse for a "consumer product" is doing. or rather NOT doing depending on how bad it turns out...

however... in comparison, Apple wants the same amount of money for a cell phone, so.

£425 to be able to play "plethora of puzzle games" hummmm.... think i will be holding on to my money till:
  1. I Get a HDTV coz whats the point in paying for blu-ray stuff with out the TV
  2. Blu-Ray films are cheaper
  3. The PS3 is cheaper
  4. More games and some good game come out, other than a plethora of puzzle games which sould awsome!!

Ps. Joe Bluebag Cashman: Should this not be under "Games"??

No, front page news can be about gaming too if it's a big story.
#13.2 vetSHoTTa35 on 25 Jan 2007 - 02:21
yeah dude.. i was thinking the samething... this should have been filed under games but whatever floats eh?
#13.3 vetcashman on 25 Jan 2007 - 12:41
Did Debs spell check that for you James?

Certain big game news can be filed under main, especially if neowin are one of the first websites to cover the news.
#14 Ji@nBing on 25 Jan 2007 - 01:15
I have to say, anyone that is dumb enough to spend 599EUR on this thing deserve what's coming to them.
#15 Chanser on 25 Jan 2007 - 01:22
Not worth it yet, as the games coming out aren't amazing.
#16 Digix on 25 Jan 2007 - 02:59
Well maybe for one positive note; i'm looking foward to getting one round xmas this year

We (Australia) are getting it around the same time too, only the 60Gb model too with a retail of AU$999.95 which is very expensive but I pretty confident regardless of that price it will sell out (thx to thinks like Buyer Edge, GE Credit etc)

The official price for the PS3 in NZ is NZ$1,199.95, all I can say is ouch!
#22 Croquant on 25 Jan 2007 - 07:56
God Damm, Sony is really stretching this launch out. I suppose for the PS4 we'll have separate launch dates for each time zone?
#23 predator001 on 25 Jan 2007 - 11:05
lol price.

think i'd buy a wii with its funkier games and more novel controllers and save myself >£200 than buy this. i had a ps and a ps2 and liked them both but i ain't paying £425 for that ****.
