The AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, expected February 20th, 2007 – available now. Newegg began selling the 90nm dual-core 3.0GHz chip for $599 in-stock (just under the volume distributor pricing of $607) while Buy.com also lists the processor, but for $685 and out of stock. The CPU features 1MB L2 cache per core and uses Socket AM2 instead of Socket 1207 (also known as Socket F, used for the AMD Quad FX platform). Still not on AMD's website, the chip’s model number, ADX6000IAA6CZ, was leaked with some preliminary specifications on Asrock's motherboard support website early this year.

Wow... they have FINALLY made it to 3GHz...
#2.1 MrCobra on 28 Jan 2007 - 09:14
They had 3GHz CPUs before the 6000+
#2.2 +Nienor on 28 Jan 2007 - 15:49
Ya, I forgot the FX-74, they are now sold in pack of one now.

Cool...

Quite reasonable price for 3GHz AMD processor.

It's not very reasonable. AMD is living in goony goo goo land if they think this kind of pricing is competitive. It's like they refuse to acknowledge what Intel has done with the Core 2's. The e6700 for instance, even not overlocked it is competitive with this CPU, and overclocked it can easily reach over 3GHz without overheating.

The AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ should cost $500 or less if AMD expects anyone other than AMD fanboys to buy it.

Oh man how the CPU-game has changed since I bought my Athlon 64 3500+ ...

Hrm, I wonder why the early release?

For that price one could buy a Core 2 Duo E6600, a nice motherboard and 2GB DDR2 ram and be laughing all the way to the bank!
#6.1 Sterling Christensen on 28 Jan 2007 - 14:59
Wow, you're almost right if you really cheap out on the motherboard and ram:
$316 - Core 2 Duo E6600
$105 - BIOSTAR TForce965PT motherboard
$180 - WINTEC 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) CL4
total: $601

The point remains that Intel's CPU is half the price.

And I'm not a fanboy, I've always owned AMD (running an Opteron 165 currently).

I don't think that mobo comes close to cheap. I have a ASRock 775Dual-VSTA, which I got for ~$50, and it's been rock solid with my e6300. Have never had bad experienced with cheap motherboards, I guess it depends who you buy them from.

Not bad. I'd like to see the benchmarks on this bad boy. Anyone gotta link?

I really feel sorry for those people still trying to say how it would be more cost effective to buy an E6600 instead.
#8.1 +Chris123NT on 28 Jan 2007 - 17:21
Well the price of the core2 itself is cheaper and it's beats the pants off the X2.

Currently
The best thing about AMD is they keep Intel (and AMD) prices down!
As if you didn't know that already, sorry.

Yea and I really for sorry for buying an AMD x2 when I should have gotten an Intel Core 2 Duo.
#9.1 MAX!MUS on 28 Jan 2007 - 19:15
Yeah, sadly for Amd, Core2Duo is the one to get. But then, Unless you are doing really demanding things with your pc, then you really don't need to spend much these days to get a decent cpu. My Sempron does me just fine, and I can still play games.

my desktop pc still has a good ole athlon xp 2600+ stuck in.
#10.1 MAX!MUS on 28 Jan 2007 - 19:17
Yeah, my old 2600M is still powering my Dad's computer. It still is quite fast for what he does with it.
#10.2 Gamerhomie on 29 Jan 2007 - 00:16
Yeah, I still got my XP 3000+ from two years ago.
#11 harveyhanson on 28 Jan 2007 - 20:36
My AMD Turion X2 TL-56 is a beast, fast little dual core, and in a laptop too, AMD rule (for the price)!

Face it AMD fudsters, Intel has pwned AMD this year. Don't complain about Intel, tell AMD to make better CPUs.

Or at least lower prices on what they already have. Where did they come up with this ~$680 price from? That's approaching prices of the core 2 quad for less than $200 more.

Why would you buy this overpriced CPU? I can't find a single reason to.

on topic
yes amd for the most part is a cheap/frugal man's firend hopefully thiswill have as much speed/quality/perfomance as the core line does
i got an
CPU Type AMD Athlon XP, 1800 MHz (13.5 x 133) 2200+
Motherboard Name Gigabyte GA-7S748 (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DDR DIMM, Audio)
System Memory 1536 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)

sort of off topic question question

is this teh fastest chip out there now
i like to know the top 4 so i can get the best bang for my buck when i build my pc next month
oh and a few great motherboard maker
#13 Jugalator on 29 Jan 2007 - 10:12
Wow, it's really a 90 nm CPU? I thought AMD had at least made the switch to 65... If not, $600 for that is really weird!
