Microsoft has gained some serious bragging rights this week and it wasn't even from its launch of the Windows Vista operating system. According to the recently completed poll by Harris Interactive and the Wall Street Journal, the company topped the charts for corporate reputation, narrowly beating out Johnson and Johnson which has held the number one spot for seven years.

7,886 Americans were asked what two companies had the best reputation and what companies had the worst reputations. Factors like social responsibility, financial performance and emotional appeal were ranked.

Have these people never heard of WGA? Do these people not question why they should pay for software that is substandard in comparison to OSS? Do these people not realise that DRM is an integral part of Vista?

I agree - we live in a Microsoft orientated world, but that is because until recently there was little choice. In the 90's/00's Apple and Linux OSs were not really ready to use as a primary OS, but nowadays we have choice...

Hmmm....

Maybe in the future people will wake up and realise that just because a company has the lions share of a market, doesn't make that company a great company.

Lol i love baseless comments like this. WGA is nothing illegal and has been in there in XP. All it does is check for your os' legality. The vast majority of users will see no problems with it. MS have fixed the WGA issue a long time ago.

DRM is not an integeral part of vista. It is exactly the same as it is in XP. Your sound will not be degraded in anyway. However if your watching an HD movie on a non HD monitor, then to save your processing power vista will degrade the quality to suit your monitor.

If you don't believe me go read the vast number of people on the forums who agree that the drm stuff that vista supposedly has is infact bull**** and does not exist.

Dammit that didnt get posted under by name.....anyways i forgot to add:

Please explain why windows is substandard to other oses. Looks like I am in for a good laugh...
And no I am not a windows/microsoft fan boy. I like linux and i use Suse linux and Vista.

Well, for a start linux is free. How can anyone want a product that is expensive (especially for business) when there is a perfectly good alternative available for free? I know that it isn't realistic for businesses to suddenly change from Microsoft, but for many smaller businesses surely this would be a sensible idea.

Microsoft isn't perhaps substandard in comparison to other OSs except in price and ease of use. I think that if you gave someone who has never used a computer a Windows machine and a Linux machine they would definitely prefer the Linux machine, as everything is free, easy to use, has free support from a very strong community and is a lot more logical. Windows seems to hide settings away so that even turning on file sharing across a LAN is a nightmare to explain to someone - once you know where to find all the relevant settings it is OK, but it is not exactly discoverable for a new user.

Linux just is the logical choice - if it hadn't taken it's time coming along, I think that it's usage would be much more wide spread.

No businesses will still choose windows. Because it is still easier to use than linux. The help and support center is very powerful. Turning off file sharing isnt hard You can auto set it with the network configuration window that comes up whenever you connect to a new network. Or you go to network and sharing center and below file sharing click disable.

Also microsoft's support is excellent. They will reply back with a fix in less than 24 hours. Also their knowledge base is extremely extensive.

Price also isnt really an issue. 200usd for software which is like core and will last you at least 2-3 years is not that bad. Also remember businesses have contracts and get vista for a lot cheaper than us per unit. Also they usually get their stuff from OEMs so once again cheaper.

Linux was never really a choice for the home user. It is still difficult and unwieldy, + has critical hardware compatability issues (wifi anyone?). You must remember that most of the population is struggling with using even Windows- which is almost laughable in complexity compared to Linux.

Apple was never really a choice either- unless you liked to pay double for the same performance. Not to mention their grandiose lock-in scheme- buy apple once, you're going to have to buy apple forever...
#2.1 LTD on 02 Feb 2007 - 12:52
Pay double for the same performance? Grandiose lock-in scheme?

Can you fit any more ignorance into your head, or is that about it?

Maybe people will wake up in the future and realise that Microsoft aint all that bad. And the more focus people put on Microsoft, the less focus gets put on the other evil company's (Google, Apple) activities.... Simply put, get off the bandwagon and develop your own opinion.
#4 Vandalsquad on 02 Feb 2007 - 11:57
The first comment was stupid and pointless WGA?

Ever think of the MILLIONS and MILLIONS they donate each year, I belive they should be holding #1 spot just for that.

There making the world a better place, even if it comes at the cost of your computer checking if your running a valid windows copy once in a while.

From the article:

Microsoft shot to the top mainly because of Bill Gates philanthropic activities. Gates has given billions of dollars to charitable organizations, but the majority of the funds have gone to his Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Created in 2000, the foundation fights global poverty and disease.

#5.1 +rm20010 on 02 Feb 2007 - 21:56
I hope no one here will draw up the mentality that being rich makes you an automatic evil tyrant and any charitable thing you ever do in your life is just buying PR for yourself.

So far, so good here.

Wow, I hope this made a few people at Microsoft smile! I am nobody's fanboy, but they deserve it. Microsoft is one of the most humble companies out there. They don't literally s**t on their competition like some companies (**** you, Steve Jobs), they endure millions of dollars a day of legal bull**** from retards like the EU, and through it all they just an average company, trying to do what an average company does -- make money.

Third party vendors s**t on them for integrating features, power users s**t on them for not integrating features. Linux snobs s**t on them because their products are not customizable enough, and little old grandmas s**t on them because their products are too customizable, with too many overwhelming options. Idiots s**t on them for computer problems that are totally 3rd-party invoked. Leet hackers and other Linux snobs s**t on them because they don't want to pay for anything in life.

You deserve this reputation for your patience and persistence, Microsoft!

#7.7 SweetLou on 03 Feb 2007 - 15:02
No, I s**t on them because of crappy OS's. I have nothing against Microsoft's business, I think they do a fine job. I think all these lawsuits against them are nuts. I never understood why others complain because they include software with their OS. To me, that is like complaining that the Honda I bought came with a Honda steering wheel! I should be able to choose the steering wheel I want in it. Well, I could, if I want to pay extra to get a new steering wheel and install it, I could. Just like if I want to use a different piece of software.
I even like some of their products. I think Streets and Trips is the best mapping/routing software there is. I use Microsoft mice and keyboards. I even have one of my computers as a dual boot, with XP on it, though I rarely use it.
As a company, I think they are fine. As an author of OS's, they are terrible.
I am a fan of OSS, though. I do believe if I buy/get a piece of software, I should be able to do what I want with it, within the law, meaning I can alter the software to better suit me, but I can't use it to distribute kiddie porn.

Here's how polling works:
Company commissions a poll.
If said poll does not reflect well upon said company, said pol is not released and a new poll is commissioned that is designed to garner more positive responses for said company; repeat ad nausium.
When the Company finaly gets a poll result they feel is worth releasing, they trumpet it as if it was the only poll they ever commissioned. You and I never get to see the results of the other polls that were commissioned.

Now, how much do you wanna bet that Microsoft commissioned this poll?

Are you retarted? It blatently states that this is not some new poll. beating out Johnson and Johnson which has held the number one spot for seven years. So now you'll say Johnson and Johnson must have commisioned the poll for the last seven years.

Why? This isn't a tech-specific survey... Unless Johnson & Johnson make computers or software :p. Your issue with the article is that you're (probably) either a Linux or OS X fanboy, and can't stand people that like Microsoft as a corporation.

I'm just making a comparison between the financial world (WSJ's arena) and the technological one (Neowin/my arena). From my personal experience, Microsoft is much more respected for making profits in the financial industry than they are for making innovative/quality products in the technology sectors.

In the end, it is just a company that just makes tools. That is it, nothing more. To answer your very wrong assumption, I allow my developers to use whatever tool is right for the job. It doesn't matter what company name is on the box. If you allow yourself to be blinded by 'brand loyalty', you are just shooting yourself in the foot. Do I agree with all of MS's tactics and business practices? No. Does this prevent me from using their tools? No.

To answer your question C-Guy: I don't own anything Apple (but I don't have anything against the company... again, it's just a company) and the last time I operated one, it was an Apple ][e.

Let's leave the trolling anti-Apple crap out. You don't like Apple and you are entitled to that opinion. But there's no place for it in a news story about Microsoft.
(2 replies) #10 Tom275 on 02 Feb 2007 - 20:42
The point of this article is that MS isn't "just a company" nor is it limited to their impact on the "tech arena." Normal companies just make a lot money. MS makes a lot of money, and then donates billions of dollars of that money to save hundreds of thousands of lives. Every year.

That's a lot better, IMO, than bringing integrated search to market first, or making a better mp3 player, or having more customizable features. Whatever, at the end of the day, they're just mindless (cool, but mindless) features. I really like computers; I read this site almost every day. But I'm not so blinded by comparing different OS companies that I lose sight of the fact that MS is the only one of those companies making real positive changes to things outside the tech industry.

I've always wondered: say if MS was in Apple's position, and Apple was the company dominating the computer market. Would Jobs ever get into this charitable work on a scale equal to what Gates is doing today or would he just sit on his ass and laugh his way through life?
