Microsoft is expected to release a beta three version of its next Windows Server, code-named Longhorn, as a community technology preview (CTP) in early March, industry sources say. The upcoming CTP would be the first public milestone for Longhorn because it will be more widely distributed to partners and customers. Microsoft quietly released a CTP in December to select partners, and the Redmond, Wash., software giant previously said it would release a beta three version in the first half of 2007.

Now that Windows Vista and Office 2007 shipped this week, Microsoft is turning up the heat on its server complement, according to one industry observer. "Beta three will be a CTP soon," said the source, who pegged the current release date as March 7. "February is all about Vista/Office launches." Longhorn is slated to feature an integrated virtualization hypervisor, enhanced support for branch offices and integration with Vista. "The bright spots are virtualization, [designed to] kill VMWare especially on 64-bit hardware, and manageability, [designed to ] kill Linux in branch office deployments," the same source said. Microsoft said it plans to ship Longhorn by the end of 2007, but observers believe it won't hit the market until 2008.

Will they be removing Aero from it? servers don't need it.

I think that's all contained in a Windows Feature that's not enabled by default. "Desktop Experience", or something

I work on Windows Sever 2003 a lot... and to be honest I'd actually want some eye candy this time around... staring at bland all day is starting to get on my nerves.

Server 2003 comes with Luna. It's turned off by default. It can be turned on just like Aero can be turned on in Longhorn Server.

Same here - I have Server 2003 Enterprise and I turned on the Luna theme, then installed the Royale theme.

I'd like to see Aero in Server 2007 (or 200.

Good to hear as I imagine my beta 2 will probably be expiring soon. Just wish their baseline server was cheaper so home use would be easier to aquire. Yes, I too have heard about Home Server but there isn't exactly a lot of information on that yet.

Longhorn Server 6001.16406 doesn't expire until 2008.

I'm also very interested in what's new to beta3, I'm not planning to run a server but any core changes/fixes they make to this will also find their way to Vista for SP1.
