This weekend, Apple Computer released iTunes Repair Tool for Vista 1.0 which is designed to "repair permissions for important files required by iTunes to play your iTunes Store purchases" when using the Windows Vista operating system. The computer maker warns users should not to upgrade to Windows Vista because of more serious compatibility issues between iTunes, its iPod digital music player and Windows Vista that the patch does not yet address. Apple says iPod users could corrupt their digital music players if they try to eject the devices from a desktop port using Vista’s "Safely Remove Hardware" feature instead of the "Eject iPod" control in the iTunes software.
Other problems with Vista and the iPod are also present, including contacts and calendars syncing issues and problems with making changes to iPod settings. The current version of iTunes on Windows Vista reportedly spits out error messages when attempting to play songs purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Store. According to Apple’s support forum, a new version is supposed to fix all these issues with the next version of iTunes available "within a few weeks."

Some currently known compatibility issues with iTunes 7.0.2 and earlier versions include:
- iTunes Store purchases may not play when upgrading to Windows Vista from Windows 2000 or XP.
- iPod models with the "Enable Disk Use" option turned off may be unable to update or restore iPod software, and make changes to iPod settings.
- iPod models configured to Auto Sync and have the "Enable Disk Use" option turned off may require being ejected and reconnected to resync.
- Ejecting an iPod from the Windows System Tray using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature may corrupt your iPod. To always safely eject an iPod, choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes.
- Cover Flow animation may be slower than expected.
- Contacts and calendars will not sync with iPod.

stand alone EXE, run it from your ipod itself if you want even for bidirectional transfer to any computer.
(*nix/mac/win binaries available)
and it's FREE.
There are two problems with this, however:
1) I don't recall Microsoft ever claiming that Vista would be 100% compatible with XP. Most people probably assume a certain amount of incompatibilities between versions.
and
2) Apple has had about a year (during the beta testing phase) to get a version of iTunes compatible with Vista ready by the official launch date.
Well, I wouldn't go that far... performance is appalling, making the system unresponsive and sucking up CPU power. I would say "worked" with XP is the best thing that could be said about it.
This is what Apple fans seem unwilling to support. Forget the beta testing phase; Vista was RTM'd months ago. Apple had the final product to test its product on for months, and they still couldn't get it right.
Having said that, mine is working just fine. I have no problems playing ITMS music. But, man, do I ever love allofmp3!
I haven't upgraded to Vista yet (and won't likely until the end of this year), but from what I've read the problem mainly exists for users that upgrade to Vista and not those that do a fresh install.
In Apple's defense, was upgrade to Vista from XP ever really beta tested?
Also, why do you like allofmp3? Wasn't it shut down. Look, for most countries allofmp3 is just a illegal as downloading the copyrighted music through some P2P network. The only difference is that you pay for music off of allofmp3 instead of downloading it for free. It is still illegal, and it is still music piracy. The question is: are you stupid enough to pay for an illegal copy of a song?
I'm pretty sure Apple won't be the only company in this position
Heck Apple has on more than one occasion completely dropped backward compatibility from their operating systems.
True... it has been in public beta for awhile... however, this beta only allowed fresh installs of Vista and not XP-upgrades to the beta. I believe, although am not certain, that most of the problems with iTunes have to do with XP-Upgrades to Vista.
^^^^ what you see before logging in to Neowin....god, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Considering I seen that just after reading these comments in regards to yet another Apple/Microsoft conversation here at Neowin.
Just because a company has had enough time, according to the Microsoft employees posting here at Neowin, doesn't mean that the compatibility code that has to be written for current apps to be compatible with a newer OS...is easy to write. Easy to test...or easy to succeed the first time out of the box. So get off Apple's back...cuz according to you die hard MS fans, you feel lucky Apple's even bothering to make it compatible to any MS OS. It isn't just Apple that needs to STFU.
lmfao.....remember where you are C_Guy, if it don't run on Vista.....
WE WANT IT FIXED NOW!!!!!!! SO ALL YOU OUT THERE DROP WHAT YOU ARE DOING, AND BOW TO THE ALMIGHTY VISTA OS!!!!
What were these peasant companies thinking??? I mean, c'mon man.....you've had all the time in the world to drop what you are doing for your own, and get this MS code up to snuff....

Considering that most of Apple's revenue comes from people with windows using itunes... yes is #1 priority
I don't hold it against Microsoft, I'm just using it as a point. The Vista betas and RC's had bugs; who's to say some of the bugs in iTunes were in fact bugs in the OS during development? That's why we're only just beginning to see Vista drivers come out. It won't take long for Apple to release its new version.
And this isn't Microsoft bashing on Apple's part if you ask me; everyone looks for an opportunity to accuse Apple of Microsoft bashing.
People who ran out to purchase Vista on day 1 are going to run into incompatibility problems with more then just iTunes and iPods. Twenty years of beta testing wouldn't have made any difference, because that is just how it goes when MS releases a new OS. Look back on history to make your decisions; none of Microsoft's Operating Systems have been worth using because of incompatibility problems until the first service pack (or the first major patch for OS's that didn't have service packs) was released.
XP was very good from the get go. I was using it as my primary OS from the late betas onward and found it to be a LOT better than WinME/98SE. Whilst Vista is a decent OS (and I have bought it) it is not the same leap forward and therefore, for most people, worth holding off for a bit.
And like someone mentioned earlier: Why is it that Microsoft has STILL not released a Universal binary of Office? It's been over a year since the first Intel Mac was released...
Ha, so because Apple is having problems with their media player, you should NOT upgrade to Vista? I think Apple have a god-complex, in thinking that this would be the sole reason NOT to upgrade to Vista...
