Microsoft apologises for serving malware

Microsoft is red-faced after admitting it has been serving malware to users via MSN Messenger and its MSN website network. APC Magazine in Australia has screenshots of the malware in action, which was being pumped via a banner ad booked by an MSN advertiser.

Microsoft has admitted to the mistake and pledged to improve its advertiser screening process. But it's a major blow for the company which has been devoting years of effort to convincing users Windows is now a safer OS.

Spyware: An annoying piece of crap software that has very little use and what little use it does have it doesn't do very well!
in the short. get TRILLIAN!

That's the worst definition I've ever heard for spyware. Spyware *spies* on you. That's it's function. It's in the damn name.

Christ, if you want to tell people to get Trilly, go nuts. But don't use a weak argument and lots of caps to get your point across.

Oh man the dictionaries are just piling up here, this is intense! Kinda like the quoting of all the posts *directly* over yours.

Well if they offered the Windows version of MSN/WLM without ads like they do with the Mac version they wouldn't have this problem in the first place
#2.1 mrmckeb on 21 Feb 2007 - 12:39
Messenger for Mac doesn't have adverts? That's the first I have ever heard of this. How do they pay for the development? Are you sure the user hadn't hacked it or something?

Yup. The Mac version of MSN doesn't have ads like its Windows counterpart. However, the Mac version is a pile of cack. See this thread http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=539620 for info and screenies.

#2.4 +TCLN Ryster on 21 Feb 2007 - 17:57
Just get A-Patch from http://www.apatch.tk if you want to remove the adverts and other fluff to make your messenger nice and streamlined.

I don't think it has a development team , that's why its still stuck at that with feature from msn messenger 1.0 lol, seriously it only works as a regular messenger, no feature from windows live like voice chat, webcam, sharign folder, etc...
#2.6 Helba on 22 Feb 2007 - 17:31
A-Patch for the win, definately.

And yes, the Mac version doesn't have ads...

...But it's also how many years out of date?

Pshaw.

You need to get in touch with Sandi - she's working with MS and MSN to get these ads shut down. That site does an ad that has not been seen in rad.msn.com before.

I had those popups, i could not find out where they were coming from. I was getting ready to reload the OS to eliminate the errors. Glad i waited.

Why the hell would you do that? You know there's things out there called "Anti-spyware programs?" At least use Ad Aware... the very minimum.
#6 Lasker on 21 Feb 2007 - 13:09
there is a patch in which you can remove the ads

Both the Mess Patch and A-Patch are capable of totally cleaning up MSN/WLM's GUIs.

I really don't know how the MS can be happy with the final result of WLM. Looks horrible and just a mess. A-Patch etc.. is a must but not everybody knows about it. How on earth they can't come out with a slick Messenger service is beyond me.
#8.1 ThaCrip on 21 Feb 2007 - 15:54
i agree thats why i dont bother using "official" chat clients like AIM - MSN - YAHOO etc... i use GAIM this way u get the main stuff you need which is chatting without all the other bs stuff.
#8.2 MioTheGreat on 21 Feb 2007 - 18:27
Not that I use Yahoo messenger, but the new Vista one looks pretty slick.
#9 MaceX on 21 Feb 2007 - 16:32
Good thing I disable the ads
(1 reply) #10 Lt-DavidW on 21 Feb 2007 - 20:03
This is wrong.

MSN/Windows Live Messenger is not by default installed on any of Microsoft's operating systems.

Actually, MSN Messenger v2.2 is installed by default on Windows ME.

[Given MS is keeping definitions out of Windows Defender for their proprietary ad/spyware, their app is as useful as a screen door in a submarine. This time, they got caught.

Exactly. Defender doesn't even find half of spware/ad threats, and the way it annoys users blocking wanted startup apps and other crap, it's better regarded as Malware itself

Eh, stupid English if you ask me. About as bad as the mysterious 'u' in color or favorite.
