IO2 Technology has released its Heliodisplay that projects a 2-dimensional mid-air display with a maximum resolution of 1024 x 1024. It appears to be convincingly 3-dimensional though, and thanks to an optical tracking system, it can detect finger or hand movements in the image and move the cursor correspondingly. The heliodisplay is about the size of a large computer tower turned on its side. Because of its size, the actual unit can be effectively hidden away into furniture. The display can be viewed in an office environment but not in bright sunlight: the darker the background and lighting, the better the display quality. It is not suited for outdoor use where wind could disperse the particle cloud.

The image is actually projected onto a cloud of microscopic particles, thought to be water droplets (IO2 did not confirm the speculation). Images appear different from images on traditional displays in that, although colors are fully rendered and text is legible, image definition and fidelity are inferior to those seen on cathode ray tube screens and LCD screens. The company expects its technology to improve and suggests applications such as eye-catching office and factory reception areas and trade shows, museums, and teleconferencing. A Heliodisplay costs $18,400 with touch-sensitivity adding a further $1,000.

More of a hologram than a 3d display
#2 acies on 04 Mar 2007 - 02:56
wow that's pretty cool.
#3 nicholas-c on 04 Mar 2007 - 02:57
very very nice give it a few years to get better and cheaper....

Wow, that's really NOT bad quality from what I've seen before in holographic images.
Sure, stripes & stuff all over, but the color quality really seems like an evolution over what I've seen before and it surprised me.

Wouldn't surprise me if this tech could evolve further by exchanging or improving the chemicals that make up the image, to allow for more and more fine grained particles under better control.

Especially nice IMO... Star Trek-y

It's more Star Wars-y, but yeah.

$18,000 USD price tag? Wow. lol. It looks cool but I think they will have to improve it a lot before it becomes a widely used format, considering LCDs are cheap nowadays.
#6 thenay on 04 Mar 2007 - 03:23
Looks cool, but I wouldn't pay $18g's for it.
Either way this will be the big thing in 5 yrs or when it comes down in price ($5000).. LOL
#7 +chconline on 04 Mar 2007 - 03:36
Remember the price when Plasma TVs came out?

Normally you only see this kind of thing in movies. Anyone remember the part in the beginning of Paycheck when Ben Affleck turns the LCD monitor into a holographic display? It's nice that we're seeing real life versions now.

Imagine when these things can output 1024x1024x1024! games are already 3d so it should be easy to adapt them to work for a display like that, then movies will have to be filmed from different angles and then rendered in 3d.
The possibilities are endless.
Maybe some day you can render your whole house with these machines, then you wont need furniture, wallpaper or anything and everyone can live in a square concrete box that looks like a 18th century castle inside.
of course you will have to sleep on the floor but it would still be pretty cool.

Just what i was thinking, Wow this is a nice bit of technology can't wait to see how they improve on it.

It's amazing how much technology has progressed withing theses 100 years!

Someone needs to buy this company out and start making this tech in to better quality use. Just looking at there website, just makes me think nothing really big will happen to this. I'm calling on Sony or Sharp to buy this company.
#12.1 Croquant on 04 Mar 2007 - 14:09
And I'm calling nVidea.
Race ya!
#13 XerXis on 04 Mar 2007 - 09:56
looking at the pictures and video's it's clearly not 3d. It's a 2d image
#14 OrganicPanda on 04 Mar 2007 - 09:58
I don't get how a company can give us a 3D display but not take a decent hi-res, or even clear, picture.
(1 reply) #15 njlouch on 04 Mar 2007 - 10:01
But how is this 3D? It's clearly a 2D image projected into a 3D space?
#15.1 Magallanes on 05 Mar 2007 - 17:28
It's "3d" screen not 3d screen.
#16 beniza on 04 Mar 2007 - 10:14
now u can have a real dancing babe on this thing beside you

anyway it should improve and maybe in 5 more year or so we can see a small box version.

#18 RuudJacobs.NET on 04 Mar 2007 - 11:23

#19 aboi on 04 Mar 2007 - 11:40
Oooh I want one, I want one.
#20 Aero Ultimate on 04 Mar 2007 - 13:15
Pretty good for starters already. The first Lcd screens didn't have an all that great quality either.
#21 .Neo on 04 Mar 2007 - 13:59
I honestly thought that those things didn't really existed yet, at least not at that quality. Very nice.

Touch-sensitivity? Now there's an idea!

Meh.

Besides for watching porn, this thing is impractical.
#23.1 Shadrack on 04 Mar 2007 - 17:35
Meh.

Thats kinda how I feel about all displays anyway.
#24 neomilan on 04 Mar 2007 - 15:59

#25 thornz0 on 04 Mar 2007 - 20:20
wonder how much power it uses, seems to me that it would be a lot. obviously for the people that could afford this its a non issue, just interested from an environmental/portable side.
