Blu-Ray Supporter Samsung Offers Notebook with HD DVD

Samsung Electronics, a maker of consumer devices and a supporter of the Blu-ray disk (BD) format, is quietly selling laptops with HD DVD optical drives on its domestic market. Samsung Electronics was the first company to announce the intention to produce a Blu-Ray and HD DVD hybrid player but decided to drop the idea in late November, without disclosing the reasons. By selling personal computers with HD DVD, Samsung shows its priorities lie with short-term business gains rather than the promotion of Blu-ray.

Additionally, it means that the demand for HD DVD-equipped notebooks is pretty strong in South Korea. Samsung M55 notebooks feature a 17” screen with a 1920x1200 resolution, up to 2GB of memory, 120GB Serial ATA HDD, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 256MB GPU, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth support and so on. The system with HD DVD a read only memory (ROM) drive is powered by an Intel Core Duo T2500 processor, whereas the more advanced Samsung M55 (€2430 or $3185) with an HD DVD burner features an Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 CPU.

"Samsung shows its priorities lie with short-term business gains rather than the promotion of Blu-ray." - to me.. this makes the most sense... companies need to go where the money is... these movie studios who are only releasing for one format are just limiting their profits... until someone can take a marginal lead... i think they need to drop this whole "studio support" and go where the money is... right now only the consumer is getting hurt by not being able to get certain movies(unless of course they have the $1200 dual format player)

Well, that would be nice, but all the studios under the Sony Pictures roof won't be doing that unless bluray dies for sure like betamax and the other formats from hell.

Well, it's got the faster CPU, AND it's a HD-DVD BURNER! Those still aren't cheap, so that price is expected.

It's still a good chunk of change. I don't think anyone in their right mind would buy it.

Hell, with that much money, I'd buy myself a giant HDTV.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that the drive is manufactured by Toshiba or NEC. No-one else makes HD-DVD drives.

The first one who realized how much Blu-Ray sucks and thus rather goes with HD-Dvd
