Windows users contemplating the cost of upgrading to Vista may need a fatter wallet than they thought. Besides shelling out for faster hardware, users should expect to pay for Vista upgrades for many of their favorite Windows software.

Rather than releasing free patches to update existing versions, leading vendors such as Adobe Systems, Symantec, and Intuit are choosing to add Vista compatibility only to new releases or still-in-development future products. Most of these new versions will add significant features along with Vista compatibility. And, vendors will argue, if Vista compatibility is a new feature, what's unfair about packaging a new feature only in new versions of their software, rather than going back and patching aging versions nearing the end of their product life cycle?

Admittedly I don't use what I would call a large amount of software but I've had no problems using existing software that I used on my XP system. I know some people are having issues, some of which are pretty major, but it's all good this end - Vista FTW!

bit of a stupid title... nobody is forced into upgrading... its rather understandable, you get a new OS you should have to pay for the extra software features (if any...).

The title is not stupid at all. With many companies (such as those listed, but still others as well), you are indeed forced to update to the latest version if you want to run it on Vista, as previous versions don't work properly. I have some problems there myself.
So there are indeed some costs adding up when you need those upgrades just to run on Vista, even if the previous versions work fine for you and you wouldn't need the upgrade. So either you splurge for all the updates to go to Vista, or you stay with XP.

Having your product WORK on a new OS is NOT a "new" feature no matter how you look at it.

Another reason not to change to Vista, so far the Cons out weigh the Pros 10:1 against Vista. For me anyway. As a home user I can't afford to go out and buy new versions of all my software just to be able to use Vista. So far my predicted date for me to update to a Vista is approx. 2009.
People for whom their computers are their hobby will no doubt upgrade, but for those (the majority) now for whom a computer is a box like their telly, they will not upgrade on a whim...

IF it holds true that MS wants to have the next version of Windows out at that time then skip Vista all together (I am).

Funny the Adobe products listed work for me... People are blowing this way out of perportion it's getting rediculous. Yes, if you have an old computer you will have to upgrade, that's the price you pay for having the latest and greatest.

Adobe products don't work very well on Vista, actually... e.g. Adobe Reader has a serious memory leak on Vista.

Microsoft probably has a lot of employees that are both "over 21" and "native English speaking". On Neowin, there are many technology enthusiasts from a variety of countries and cultures, and a variety of ages.

Please don't be so petty to make disparaging personal comments when the poster may very well not speak English as their primary language, and may even be a young kid. Cut people some slack, and maybe comment on the points of their post rather than stooping to ad hominem.

And presumably they also have people who, when degrading a product, can justify their reasons. I would lambast that poster too, for that extremely inflammatory comment. The post he was disparaging was asking to be disparaged. Typical Linux zealots (not fanboys, zealots). Say, is that froth coming from his mouth?

Someone obviously did, which will be one reason why they banned upgrading to Vista (along with IE7 and Office2007).

Didn't this exact same thing happen when XP rolled out?....heck even when SP2 rolled out, you had to buy a new version.
