The world’s second largest provider of x86 chips, Advanced Micro Devices, said at conference that it would lower its sales guidance for the first quarter of fiscal 2007. Speaking to investors at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco, chief executive Hector Ruiz said AMD would not meet its first-quarter sales guidance of between $1.6 billion and $1.7 billion but noted: "The environment is very competitive, very competitive. We need to break the monopoly, and for that we've got to get above 30% [market share]," Mr. Ruiz said.

According to preliminary figures from a study by Mercury Research, Intel Corporation controlled 74.4% of the x86 chip market in Q4 2006, AMD owned 25.3% of the market and the remaining 0.3% were shared between companies like Transmeta Corporation and Via Technologies. In the last quarter of 2006, Intel shipped 77.7% of central processing units for servers, up from 76.3% in Q3 and 74.1% in Q2. AMD’s share in Q4 slipped to 22.3%, down from 23.7% in the prior quarter.

At any cost?

Try to buy Intel...

Better yet, they ought to buy low end Core 2 Duos in tremendous volume, overclock them, and slap an AMD badge on the heat spreader.

There you go. Minimal overhead and maximum profit! They won't have to worry about moving to smaller transistors either...let Intel do the work!

This should get interesting. We can't afford to lose AMD, but how many of you would give up a core 2 at this point?

Ouch... AMD is dieing...

The only thing that makes one go "ouch" is your poor English

Barcelona...its coming.
#4.1 raskren on 07 Mar 2007 - 15:39
And...?

You don't think Intel has higher performing products coming down the pike too?

Where are Barcelona's performance numbers? If AMD truly had a better product they would have released performance, price, and wattage numbers by now to get the hype wagon rolling.

"We need to break the monopoly"

No, you need to match or beat the Conroe's performance or get left behind in Intel's dust. Wake up and smell quad cores, AMD.

No, if only someone can explain that to the Linux fanboys, maybe Microsoft will receive some genuine competition rather than lip service from the cheap seats.

So they are willing to murder Intel designers?

If anyone at AMD reads this.....I'll tell you what "at any cost" is gonna require....

Ya see all those TV Intel commercials? The ones that place Intel in front of everyone so that they can see they exist??

Ok...well.....get to Hollywood and borrow someone's camera and start filming, because there hasn't been any AMD commercials on TV that I'm aware of (least none I've seen) and certainly not any recently. AMD had a great opportunity when the FX series was blowing Intel out of the water...it's time to get that back, and time to start showing the world what AMD is capable of.

That's the right spirit I like to see from Amd
Unlike Intel, Amd doesn't need to hype their products. When Amd releases their new Cpu, Intel won't even know what hit them

Lets reword that:

When Intel released their new CPU [back in July], AMD didn't even know what hit them.

Ha Ha like when AMD dropped the sledghammer on intel three years back and sent them reeling Now their gonna get clobbered with the bulldozer

Let's be fair, the AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800 for $100 is an excellent value cpu compared with the more expensive Core 2 Duo. I build more x2 rigs then c2d rigs because it's enough power for 90% of the people who use their computers for basic tasks.

CPU = $100
Mobo = $80
1GB DDR2 = $60

About $400+ and you can build a decent rig.

Gamers are a smaller percentage of users.

Also most people don't overclock so the differences are NOT as great between low end cpu's, a x2 3800 versus a e6300 isn't much of a difference for most people.

Thats US pricing, go anywhere else in the world and AMD's are either no different in price or worse, so poorly undersupplied, its impossible to source them.

Talking about basic tasks, the even cheaper P4s and PDs are fine as well, plus they have a better upgrade option since you can replace them with a C2D later, you can't do that with an X2.

AMD has always offered sound alternatives at decent prices but lets not kid ourselves here, Intel is the big player and always has been. They are the architects of x86 and most technologies based on the platform, they are worth ten times what AMD is and have the best engineers in the world.

If you buy a AM2 board you have a chance to upgrade to a AM3 cpu in the future as AMD says they will run on the same socket and support both DDR2 and DDR3 memory. Kuma will be the dual core upgrade released in q4 and hopefully will close the gap with Intel once agian.
