NVIDIA’s GeForce 8600GTS and 8600GT are G84-based GPUs while the GeForce 8500GT is G86-based. The budget-priced trio feature full support for DirectX 10 features including pixel and vertex shader model 4.0 as well as support for NVIDIA SLI and PureVideo technologies. NVIDIA touts three dedicated video engines on the G84 and G86-based graphics cards, providing MPEG-2 high-definition and WMV HD video playback up to resolutions of 1080p. G84 and G86 support hardware accelerated decoding of H.264 video as well (no mention of VC-1 decoding). G84 and G86 also feature advanced post-processing video algorithms. Supported algorithms include spatial-temporal de-interlacing, inverse 2:2, 3:2 pull-down and 4-tap horizontal, and 5-tap vertical video scaling.

GeForce 8600GTS PCIe x16
  • Eight-layered PCB, measures 7.2” x 4.376”
  • 675 MHz GPU and a 128-bit bus
  • 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1000 MHz
  • Require external PCIe power; estimated total board power consumption: ~71-watts
  • Supported video output connectors: include dual dual-link DVI, VGA, SDTV and HDTV outputs, and analog video inputs
GeForce 8600GT PCIe x16
  • Six-layer PCB, measures 6.9” x 4.376”
  • 540 MHz GPU and a 128-bit bus
  • 128MB or 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 700 MHz
  • External PCIe power not required; maximum board power consumption: ~43-watts
  • Supports similar video outputs as the 8600GTS, no video input features
G84-based GPUs do not support a native HDMI output, manufacturers can adapt one of the DVI-outputs for HDMI. HDCP support is optional and up to NVIDIA’s add-in board partners. NVIDIA has revealed very little information on the GeForce 8500GT besides support for GDDR3 and DDR2 memory. It supports dual dual-link DVI, VGA and TV outputs as well. Expect NVIDIA to pull the wraps off its GeForce 8600GTS, 8600GT and 8500GT next quarter in time to take on AMD’s upcoming RV630 and RV610.

Kind of annoying. I'm looking a getting a new PC and I'd prefer to get a low-end DirectX 10 card if possible.

release date of the GTS is 17 april while the 8600GT and the 8500GT is 1 May according to OCworkbench and overclockers.ru. Don't know where they got their info from though. That 1GHz memory will run at 2GHz effectively also according to the sources. Rumours, rumours...so useless if you ask me :/

That info has been reported on several sites and seems to be legit. Prices are supposed to be ~$250 for the GTS and ~$150 for the GT. They're replacing the 7600 GT and the 7950.

I'm wondering if the low end 8800 that's going for ~$300 now might not be a better choice than the GTS? Prices on it should come down a little more by then AFAIK.

make hdmi and hdcp mandatory, if users want to use 2 dvi's then they can use a hdmi to dvi cable!

Otrher way around, my friend.
Why would you want HDCP? **** that noise, I want to be able to play what I want when I want where I want, and the MPAA can kiss my shiny metal can.

HDCP should be required since it's here to stay and why not have it.. that just limits you to not being able to watch HDDVD & Blu-ray. It's stupid not to have HDCP now.

Both HD-DVD and BD are cracked, so I can watch movies ripped from them any way I want. Don't need HDCP or HDMI.

So limit your options, that's fine. The legal folk are just a little bit smarter about it.

Well I think this is supposed to cut costs... or at least make the better cards seem worth the higher asking price.

does this mean the 8600GTS is external only? or needs a power cable from psu ?

It needs a PCIe cable from the PSU. The card isn't external, but it needs more power than the PCIe slot can provide.
This isn't new, it's been this way for a while now. My 7900 GTO needs a PCIe power cable too.

I've still got an ATI X850XT PE (Love it) Thats nearly a couple of years old and that requires a 6-wire plug from the PSU or a spare molex (exactly the same as the current 8000 series... that might need 2 molex?!?! )

It's just crazy at how much power these video cards draw, 2 x 6pin PSU connections or 1 of the new 8pin ones that ATi will use + external connections also, that's just insane.

CPU's on the other hand use lower and lower power, while GPU's just seem to skyrocket.

8600GT with 128MB and 128-bit...I expected so much more somehow. Guess I'll just have to wait for the 8800GTS 320MB to come down in price (mid summer I hope)

Crippling the cards with a slow 128bit bus is extremely lame
#6 BilliShere on 15 Mar 2007 - 03:32
This is some kind of joke or something...? Look how small and cute those cards are...or is it some kind of illusion?
