Apple has announced it has sold the 100 millionth iPod – the first iPod was sold five and a half years ago, in November 2001. Since then Apple has introduced more than 10 new iPod models, including five generations of iPod, two generations of iPod mini, two generations of iPod nano and two generations of iPod shuffle. “At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success. iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
The iPod has also sparked an unprecedented ecosystem of over 4,000 accessories made specifically for the iPod that range from fashionable cases to speaker systems, and more than 70% of 2007-model US automobiles currently offer iPod connectivity. The iTunes Store features the world’s largest online catalog with over five million songs, 350 television shows and over 400 movies. It has sold over 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and over 1.3 million movies, making it the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store.

gadget? yes it may be, but now days the iPod is more of a fashion and status statement than anything else... I'd seen people buying iPods and they didn't even have a computer, they just borrow one at work or somewhere else just for the sake of looking "cool"...

What a generalization. Believe it or not some people do buy the iPod after researching other music players and choosing the iPod for whatever reason.

Her second reason was the Click Wheel, which was a very good idea. However, I didn't try out the wheel that spun on the original iPod, but I may have preferred that just for the sensation you can feel, compared to rubbing your finger against a textured piece of metal...
there are plenty of mp3 players out there that puts the ipod to shame. research shows that conclusion.
Great marketing plays huge to the ipod's success, and i agree with Spatan_X on a large part of its success is brought from fashion and coolness factor.

Puts it to shame in what way? I don't want any more features than the iPod has, and to me price just isn't an issue. When it comes down to it - I like the iPod interface and the integration with iTunes. I imagine I am not the only one.
Agree.
More storage space, better design, more compatible, lower cost, etc. Also just because money is no object for you that doesn't mean it's the same for everyone else. I work hard for my money, I'm not going to spend it on a product just because it's "cool" when there are better products available for a lower price.
You don't understand what I am saying. I'm saying that not everyone chooses the iPod because it is cool. All the reasons you are listing that the ipod is "put to shame" by the creative are YOUR reasons. They may be valid, but I don't care about that stuff.
All I was trying to say was that it isn't fair to lump all iPod owners into a "sheep" category when there are many of us who have researched other players, and reached the conclusion that the iPod fits our lives better (for now).

I'll agree with ya on that. I got the new Shuffle mostly for it's size and storage. Suits me just fine.

So yeah, I think they are very capable products. I dont need or want some crippled wifi or whatever, just a light and small player with good capacity and acceptable audio performance and I think the iPod would achieve that.
We have people on this site that spend hundreds of hours and spend hundreds of dollars modding their computer cases, their desktops, their cars...etc. But once you want to have a good looking music player, it becomes taboo.
Maybe not everyone wants to carry around a brick like the Zune.

so, I bet you can mod the case of your iPod and use the music you bought from another music store and you can also play a gazillion formats of audio AND video...
besides, I'd never seen any of those people that spend thousands on home electronics going to a party where the music is really loud wearing their computer case around the neck and a pair of white hearphones...
I saw a usability study about what features people use the most from the iPod... #1 music, #2 media storage and #3 it helps me to pick up girls/boys/or both...
2. I rip all my CDs.
3. All my music is in mp3 format.
Can't think of a better music player than the iPod for me.
To the argument about looks, would you buy a car that looks and drives like crap. but could use so many fuels ?
The iPod still has the best sound quality around.
I think that "trashes" is a harsh word. The difference between sound quality is NEGLIGIBLE between the high-end media players like iPod and Creative Zen Vision...
I own a Creative Zen Vision:M btw, but I wouldn't mind buying an iPod, and my next purchase might infact be one. It's smaller than a Zen, has an 80GB version now, has an improved battery and has better software (like gapless playback!
They have to. If people don't see them wearing those white earbuds they won't know that they are trendy and cool.
Your Zen doesn't have gapless? And it was produced when (looks and finds Best of CES 2006 award)? Any player that doesn't support gapless by now is crap, pure and simple. Which is one reason why I got a Rio Karma years ago (because the iPod didn't handle gapless back in the day).
One Hundred Million suckers...
</steve jobs in dr. evil form>
nokia sold 100 millions music phones in just a year...but they have tons of model to choose from, the iphone will likely have the fate of the imac/macbook.
Meaning become one of the most desirable, iconic, highest-margin products in the category, with an ever-increasing sales rate? Mr. Jobs can only hope so
I think the word you were looking for is "over priced".

Thanks for the assistance, but I said exactly what I meant. How is the 30gb iPod overpriced when comparing to a similar capacity Zune?
