Sony plans OLED TV launch

Sony Corporation has announced its hopes to steal a lead on its rivals this year by launching televisions that use organic LED displays. OLED screens have several advantages over the LCDs and plasma display panels: the OLED pixels use an organic material that emits its own light, so no backlight is needed. That means the screens consume less power and can be thinner. OLEDs also handle fast-moving images better and offer good color reproduction. Sony plans to launch an OLED TV with an 11-inch screen in Japan this year – no other details of the product's launch had been decided but at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January the 11-inch prototype was 11 millimeters thick and offered a resolution of 1,024 by 600 pixels. Sony also showed off a 27-inch prototype OLED panels. Sony wouldn't comment on pricing plans for its OLED TVs.

What's "organic" about them? What is the pixel filling made of?

They're FDA certified to have been grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers! Once you're done watching them, you can fry 'em and serve 'em on toast with hollandaise sauce!

It's not like you need the line about people for it to be gettable!

11 inch OLED!! Woot, I'm all over it! Better book my ticket to Japan right away!

Seriously, sounds great if this could become the future of flat displays... We're still in the early days of flat panels... Maybe in just a few years, we'll look at today's LCD screen color reproduction and plasma sharpness with disgust. But that's also the charm of technology..

This is going to cost some serious money.

Actually OLED will cost alot less to produce than LCDs or any other type of display for that matter, however with everything new it will probably cost a decent amount at first, mostly to cover expenditures in the R&D it took to create them.

I heard OLED's tend to go dim after a short period of time.

That's why Sony will be selling the organic fertilizer as well - you'll just have to pour it into your panel using specially designed tube in the back ... :-)

very nice !! ... when will we have 25"+ OLEDs ? ...
that will be very sexy with the ps3 ...

mm,I thought the only possible reason for buying a PS3 was a cheep blu-ray media pc running linux.

Then I was informed running 3rd party OS locks out the gfx system so no hardware accelerated frame buffer. Gag.

way off topic though.. soz

"good color reproduction"? OLED's possess the highest color and contrast space characterstics available...by orders of magnitude. So far, this looks to be the killer technology for the entire display sector. It can't come soon enough for me.
