Apple has introduced Final Cut Studio 2, its high-end video-editing software, and unveiled Final Cut Server, designed to help broadcasters manage post production. The software now allows for the editing of different video formats at the same time (Open Format Timeline), the removal of unwanted camera movements (SmoothCam tool), and speeds up the process for dialogue replacement. The new server, along with 10 concurrent licenses, will go on sale in the summer for $999 while unlimited licensing will bump up the price to $1,999. Final Cut Studio Pro 2, due to be released in May, will run $1,299 or $499 for an upgrade.

"We've been working hard to make this the biggest upgrade we've ever seen in professional applications," said Rob Schoeben, Apple's vice president of applications product marketing, who added that the number of Final Cut Pro users has grown from 500,000 to 800,000 in the past year. Final Cut Pro 6 includes Apple's ProRess 422 format, a tool to help manage uncompressed high-definition video. ProRess 422 shrinks HD-quality files into standard definition sizes to make it easier to transfer and edit, Schoeben said. Apple's new professional color grading and finishing application was also rolled out.

Yeah, go ahead and tell that to all the professional video editors that use it.

I hate this program, as much as I hate the term industry standard. I do have a Mac, but Final Cut seems to slow my production time down when I can do it twice as fast in Adobe Premier. I would so love to learn Avid cept College and Uni bum Final Cut so much.

I don't understand both Premiere and Final Cut (I have to say that I just opened it, tried playing with it, and closed it). However, I do understand After Effects, but Premiere is different... at least you're still gonna have Premiere on the Mac very very soon! I love competition.

Glad to see MS fan boys have such a wide range of acceptance.

Sorry slick, but I care so your statement is wrong. Is FC better than Premier? No. Does it do a good job? Yes.

I am not an MS fanboy, slick, I am just saying that this is boring, it is not something that is worth purchasing over Final Cut Studio 1. It is expensive and it doesn't look like it is that big of an improvement, coming from a company that delays development on its operating system for its stupid phone!! What kind of a moron allows the product that they are all about to be put on second priority to release a product that will flop MAJORLY and has nothing to do with them!

Flop majorly? So you can see the future?

Mind you that's what people said about the first iPod and look where it is now. I'm not saying they'll succeed but you have to realize that they might also be successful also.

And as for delaying Leopard, I think the iPhone will bring in more income to the company than the next OS release. I'll be all over Leopard when it's out but I'm looking to buy an iPhone too.

The iPhone cannot succeed if it is limited to Cingular Wireless and only to one country...If they release it all over the world and to every carrier then okay and also have it unlocked. Also, if they lower the price by like half, then I'll buy it.

I couldn't even work out how to rip the video off the camera when I used Final Cut Pro 1 on work experience a few years back.

No video editing software can't beat AVID Xpress if you don't believe me ask Hollywood which video editing software they use it

And ask most TV networks what they're switching to! The new Final Cut Server will drive switching even further...

Nothing is wrong with Apple's apps. They're among the best in the industry. Everyone knows it. It's just that there is alot of hand-wringing and shock & awe over the fact that a company that is a fraction the size of the competition, that lays claim to a fraction of their (comparative) revenue, can put out such solid products.

They don't use Avid Xpress. They use either Media Composer or the DS line. It is also important to note that many of the over 300 TV station in the US are looking for the most economical way to produce HD content and Final Cut is it. Many of the premiere TV stations have installations for 1080i editing.

PS. In a past life I did edit shows for national distribution using both Avid MC and Final Cut.

The real reason this isn't attractive to Windows users: it offers absolutely NO reason to switch.

Adobe's Production Studio, or heck, even Master Collection CS3 as is, for the MAC or the PC (tight cross platform, cross application workflow too), is an obviously much better deal for newcomers without a strong grip on either workflow. Already including everything needed to put FCS 2 to shame. Now throw Avid into the picture and watch.

BTW Apple, remind me to buy a Mac and FCS when you actually throw in a COMPETENT M/G editor. Motion in all aspects loses to Adobe After Effects 7, which had a Mac-ish interface and also the great features.

My God, People. . . get a life! Pick the tools(s) that work best for you and enjoy. If you're happy with what you use then use it. If you're looking for a change then keep an open mind and add to your arsenal as you see fit. Who cares what tool you used if result is good? There are plenty of excellent tools out there for every user and the competition keeps the pressure on to take it to the next level. Anyone got a problem with that?

These are professional applications and not meant for home users. Windows home users should stick with Ulead apps or Sony Vegas, and Mac home users should be fine with the iLife apps. Most people don't know the differences between these pro video softwares anyway.

Adobe After Effects is a video compositor. It doesn't do real time playback while editing but can do all kinds of effects, almost unlimited possibilties. Apple Shake is a the competition to After Effects.

Adobe Premiere is a non-linear Video Editor. It does real time playback and some simple real time effects, but very limited. Apple Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Studio is the competition.

Apple Motion is for motion graphics, which is usually simple animated text or graphics, usually placed on top of live videos. And it also has real time playback and made to compliment Final Cut Pro. Adobe doesn't have any products like Motion.

FCS2 seems nice, but its not really not that big of an improvement over FCS. Final Cut Server, now that is an interesting new product.
