- What's the point? Nearly all software today is still written for single-core CPUs, and most people don't even need the power a single-core CPU gives them if they would do maintenance on their PC once a month!

- Well i will quite happily see this happen, good price drop once it does. As for not using it, well if its not there course you won't use it, but if this becomes more mainstream then maybe developers will start writing software to support 2-4 processers.

personally i cant wait! i know i will be able to utilise that kinda processor

If you are the type of person that thinks this, you are the type of person who doesn't need quad-core. Why have an 8-cylinder car when a 4-cylinder car can get you where you need to go? Why have cars when there are bicycles? Why have bicycles when you've got feet?
Everyone sees multi-core processors and says "but how fast will it run this game, or this app, etc.", and everyone forgets about the advantages when running MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS AT THE SAME TIME. Try encoding a movie, having VMware open with a virtual machine running, and Photoshop open, with your IM app running and Firefox loaded up with 8 tabs, all on a one-core processor. It's not that great. But when you move to a dual-core/quad-core etc. setup things become MUCH better. Not everyone uses their computer to IM and play games. -

I think he means that most people just use the 'puter to surf the web and email, and if that's all they use it for any processor will do. -

your analogy has completely missed the mark. in engines, each cylinder works in perfect unison towards a single task.. multi-core cpus do the complete opposite! so basically, for a quad core, i'm paying a premium to have cpu intensive programs automatically get only 25% of what's available, leaving leaving me with a responsive system. the same can be accomplished by using task manager, only it's better because said programs grab all idle cycles possible.
The research firm also noted that the notebook segment is not expected to move at the same pace: penetration of quad-core microprocessors in mainstream notebooks is expected to being in the first quarter of 2009, and will only account for 4% of systems. By the fourth quarter of that year, iSuppli believes quad-core processors will be in 11% of all mainstream notebook PCs shipped.
