Jack Thompson, the over acting lawyer who likes to make gamers Hulk smash angry (but not violence angry) took to the air waves literally minutes after the horrendous Virginia Tech massacre and started his usual "blame video games" nonsense. If any of you have seen or listened to Mr. Thompson and his rants over the past few days, you would realize very quickly that the man is just out to make people scared, and of course to make gamers upset. He blames the Virginia Tech shootings on what else, Counter-Strike. Even though authorities (and indeed his own roommates) have said that no games were found and that he was never seen playing games, Mr. Thompson continues his push that games especially Counter-Strike are the cause for the terrible shootings.

Jack Thompson was not alone this time around however, as TV shrink Dr. Phil also blamed video games, though nothing specific. Howard Stern himself called out Dr. Phil on that one. And now MSNBC has come out swinging against Jack Thompson. Citing a few interesting factoids, MSNBC pretty much discounts everything Mr. Thompson has said over the past few days. Mr. Thompson for example, contends that these types of school shootings would never occur if it weren't for violent video games. Yet MSNBC reminds Mr. Thompson that the 2nd worst school shooting in US history occurred way back in 1966, long before Grand Theft Auto 3 turned our youth into walking Postal doods. Pong wasn't even created yet, and we all know how violent Pong was. Hardball with Chris Matthews also let Jack Thompson have it the other day, where Chris Matthews pretty much called him out on everything he said. Oh and let us not forget, that since video games have become more popular over the past few decades, violent crimes have actually decreased in this country, and youth violence rates have also decreased.

Over and over again Jack Thompson proves he is just a zealot out there to push his own values on everyone else, and video games are his favorite target. This time people are fighting back more than ever. The Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) is out there talking to the media, and Empire Arcadia in association with the ECA are planning a gamers rally in NYC on May 5th to oppose Jack Thompson and Dr. Phil. The rally will allow gamers to mourn over the tragic events at Virginia Tech, and to protest the constant blame game Jack Thompson and others play. When will we as gamers stand up to Jack Thompson and all the others who are out there to blame video games on all the ills of society? Or will be just sit back on our behinds and play our games and let them continue to blame everything on games, and eventually have their way and ban/control them?

Oh and did I mention that Mr. Thompson actually sent a letter to Bill Gates, blaming him and Microsoft for this terrible tragedy? What?

brilliant. thank you MSNBC, we just need a more mainstream news source (prehaps Fox, as they were the idiots who allowed him on air) to discredit him, them perhaps the general public will ignore JT?

Blah, 10 million xbox 360s sold, 2 school shooting that I know of in the past year. Thats a verrrry tiny percent. And thats not taking into consideration other consoles & PC gaming, so that percent got even lower.

It's like saying eating a hamburger or sneezing causes people to do this.

I am not a huge fan of Microsoft or Bill Gates, but blaming him first of all, especially for a game his company didn't even publish, and the fact it was noted that apperently this kid wasn't into video games = very bad mistake by Jack Thompson and I hope to hell, Bill Gates personally & Microsoft as a company both sue his *** for defamation.

He could easily get some jail time for what he's said about Microsoft creating Counter Strike and Bill Gates being responsible for the shootings. Neither are true and he said it all while being on TV where he can't deny he said it.

No wonder he completely failed as a lawyer. If Bill Gates decides to take this to court, Thompson might as well just give up now. He'll be completely screwed. Yes I mean the prison version of screwed. He better get used to screaming out the name Bubba soon.

Is there a public e-mail address for him floating anywhere? I feel the need to write him a letter.

I think he had one out there, but he had so many "evil" emails coming in he nuked it. I could be wrong. But you need to understand, he doesn't need to get angry overly violent sounding emails telling him where to stick his ideals, he needs calmly written, intelligent stuff to show him we gamers aren't the violent raping, mutant, whatevers he thinks we are.

Know what I mean?

Indeed. It got to a point where he set up an autoreply bot for that email box, scanning it every now and then to respond only to mails he cares about - namely, the heads of those parent groups and anyone that kisses his arse.

I play Counter Strike Source almost every day, you don't see me going out and killing 30+ people, because I'm not MAD!

It makes me think religion is more to blame than violent video games, they (terrorist) seems to do it all in the name of religion (almost using it as an excuse).

I think violent video games are a good thing if used at the right age, because it stops people doing it in real life.

Valve should sue Jack Thompson for being unfair on them in the media spotlight.

I don't know much about this guy because I'm from England but poweruser.tv went on about him a lot.

With Thompson it is religion actually, I didn't add that to my little editorial because I didn't want to start a massive flame war - but Jack Thompson is very religious and does use religion in his lawsuits and other nonsense he spouts out.

I don't want to start anything here either, but he's always quoting the bible or something religious and if you are against him your a sinner and are going to burn in hell pretty much. I am just lumping together of course, he doesn't say these things often and not specifically I don't think. I saw a story on digg once about him going off at a college (religious college btw) and blaming the downfall of our society on gamers and the evil bible bashers etc.

He uses religion a lot, but he's no man of God. Saw him on something once a while back and he was quoting scripture that he obviously was making up. I'm not as religous as I used to be, but I've read the bible 3 times and he was completely making up stuff.

I saw him on Chris Matthews the other day and Matthews was proving him wrong left and right and I was sitting here cracking up. Thompson was annoyed but trying to hide it and kept spouting off lies and Matthews turned around and proved him wrong each time then Matthews ended the interview and I actually stood up and started clapping. Someone finally made him look like the pure idiot he is on national television.

I'm just waiting for all the gamers to start spreading that video all over YouTube, Google Video and anywhere else they can

I'd say the news media is more at fault than anything where people can escape to. Heck the news media especially NBC proved that if you kill a bunch of people, you can get instant fame once your dead. This will only encourage more people. The main problem with the killer here is more the system failed. They simply didn't enforce the laws.

In this particular case for once I'd actually agree that perhaps some professors should have a gun to protect the students.

Perhaps Mr. Thompson needs his own head examined for anger management? Wonder what violence he grew up on.

He could probably get sued for mentioning Counter Strike in the first place, as it could be seen as advertising. and if the channel he was on doesnt have rights to advertise CS. then theres another law suit
