Google courts broadcasters with YouTube ads

Patrick Walker, European head of video partnerships at Google, has revealed that broadcasters and other content producers are working with Google on 30-second "pre-roll" ads meant to appear before a YouTube video is played. The ads will start appearing next year, and revenue will be shared between YouTube and the broadcaster. Walker told delegates at the MipTV conference in Cannes that broadcasters have been enthusiastic about creating the ads, and predicted that 2008 will see "real money coming in" from video advertising.

Meanwhile, Google chief executive Eric Schmidt has called for broadcasters to embrace online advertising rather than rely on the "flat" TV ad model. Speaking at the NAB TV technology show in Las Vegas, Schmidt said that the internet will be as big a revenue "land grab" as television was in the mid-20th century. "Revenues are largely flat in broadcasting and Google's technology will increase these," he said.

The no ads was what made YouTube so awesome. You're able to just get on and browse videos without dealing with that crap. This sucks.

Haven't they thought about what would happen if every video requires you to watch a 30 second ad? People would be more picky about the vids they watch and would propably jump ship to services that don't forcefeed ads to you.

30 seconds ad? Some of the video clips aren't even that long. Weird when the ad are longer then the clip you wanna see.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt is full of the same crap his shiny new video service is. May all those TV people that choose to join him pop with his bubble. :|

Just like most money hungry Shylock sites out there they will probably offer some sort of "premium" ad-free account option.

YouTube is awful as is, I can't believe they allow have of the videos to be on there. Most are against copyright and are very much illegal. It is only a matter of time before they start to clamp down due to lawsuits. Now they pull this stuff with ad's, perfect!! This will only allow lawsuits to show up at their doorstep faster!

I doubt the ads are for every video but. By the way payments are sharred and all I'd assume the ads are more geared towards corporations using youtube to host videos or users who want to make a bit of money. Sounds optional or at the very least something that wont be on EVERY video.

I'm pretty sure the article is saying that the video ads will be shown before videos that are submitted by the broadcasters. Frankly I don't care. YouTube is about user-submitted content, not the stuff you can watch on TV.
