Memory Prices Set to Hit the Bottom in the 2H '07

After tumbling for more than four consecutive months, prices on dynamic random access memory (DRAM) may sustain rapid decrease in the coming months, causing memory chip makers to continue losing money. Nevertheless, as the demand towards computers increases in the second half of the year, towards back-to-school season, the prices may start to rebound, according to DRAMeXchange.

Price of one 512Mb DDR2 PC2-5300 (667MHz) chip has decreased by 53% in the last twelve months from $5.21 to $2.37, which is not really negative for large DRAM manufacturers as they continually implement new manufacturing technologies and, considering that prices remained pretty high till mid-December, 2006, hardly anyone suffered from changing pricing in 2006. However, starting 2007 memory pricing has been tumbling rapidly and may soon hit the bottom. The persisting price declines have pushed DRAM makers to the verge of losing money. Migrating to more advanced fabrication processors, and boosting shipments of 1Gb chips will be two key factors in deciding how the respective DRAM makers perform in the second half of the year, according to market tracker DRAMeXchange

I know I was SHOCKED to buy 2 gig of DDR2 ram for my LAPTOP for less than 150 bucks! And it wasn't an
el-cheapo brand either.
I think I'll stuff 4 gig in my home box while the price is down. EVENTUALLY I'll make the Vista dual boot/Linux
upgrade.

512Mb DDR2 PC2-5300 (667MHz) for $2.37 .....

You do realize that's not a 512 MB (MegaByte) module right? That's a 512 Megabit (64 MB) chip, of which it would take 8 to make a 512 MB module.

I'm hoping that price drop affects the UK as well.

I just did a check with Crucial for some memory for my ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe and 2Gb (2 x 1Gb sticks DDR 400) costs £115 (or $230). Does anyone know where I can pick up some good quality memory for a cheaper price, or am I deluding myself?

i'd like to pick up some cheap DDR ram (not DDR2). and it seems like all the prices are falling for DDR2, but not DDR.

+1 DDR is still very expensive. I used to get 1 gig sticks for $35 before the prices went crazy.

Vista needs 2GB to run well so this is great timing.

Liar. 512 MB is plenty.

I can't wait to see the price drop and upgrade to 4GB

Man I got 2GB (1GBx2) I sure do want 4GB total. (1GBx2) is so cheap right now want more ram for when I HAVE to move over to vista.

I'm going to upgrade to 4gb in june.... That, and maybe upgrade to the best S939 processor still out there, hoping there's still some...

I hope it keeps dropping. I'm moving to Vista soon and I don't want to paty too much for the extra 1-2 GB upgrade I'll be needing.
