Nvidia Corporation has introduced the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra, or what it claims to be the world's fastest GPU. The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra performs an average of between 10-15% faster than its "predecessor", the GeForce 8800 GTX GPU. The graphics card features 768MB of onboard memory, a 384-bit wide memory bus and a G80 GPU clocked at 612 MHz (compared to the 8800 GTX’s 576 MHz). It will be available worldwide by May 15 starting at $829. NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card launch partners include Asus, BFG, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, MSI, PNY, Point of View, Sparkle and XFX.

"The definitive gaming platform is built around the fastest components available and today there is no disputing those components include the GeForce 8800 Ultra GPU and an NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI-ready motherboard. The graphics industry evolves extremely quickly and it is quite an achievement when you can leapfrog your own performance milestones in succession like we have done with these GeForce 8 Series GPUs," said general manager of desktop GPUs at NVIDIA.

$829? Thats insane!
#1.1 cardg on 03 May 2007 - 03:08
And all of this for an overclock... it doesnt even have more pipelines... its the same thing overclocked, nothing else.

Is there really a game that can't run without this $829 crap?

uh. no.

Will the price ever drop?

uh, yes.

When the price has dropped, will there be a game that can't run without this $829 crap?

uh, very unlikely unless they make the drop after a year...

I have two superclocked 8800's. The only difference I see is the memory is clocked a little higher. I'm happy.

I agree. You can put together a decent basic home-based PC for that much. I've played HL2, Doom 3, COD1 and 2, FEAR, Oblivion, Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2, BF2... on my GeForce 6800GS 256 MB and I've been satisfied with all of them. Then again, I'm not really picky and don't strive for every last frame per second.
I'm getting married in August so there hasn't been mention of any PC upgrades in over a year. But then again, I've been happy with my specs since I got them. I use lightweight efficient software, keep my start-up entries below 3, Services disabled, disk defragmented, temp/cache cleaned out, registry clean and defragmented, malware/viruses to a constant 0 and my event ID errors to a minimum... so my system runs great.

Lol...they should focus first in making decent drivers to support those cards...
Why invent the car if you havent invented gas?

in that case, gas cannot be invented. it should be discovered and mined.

Gasoline cannot be mined or drilled, are you thinking of petroleum?

well it's like this..I consider 8800gtx ULTRA card to be the ultimate for a person who's completely in HD.

If you have an awesome 50-60" plasma at full 1080p, you have all the HD goodies out on the market right now, then you probably have spent around $20k-$30k on it anyways. For me personally when these cards come out, i will probably pick up 2 8800 Ultras to play Crysis and all the new upcoming DX10 but also old DX9 games in incredible smoothness at 1920x1080 resolution. I would say 2x8800GTX would do the job, but I think that Ultras will provide that 25% more for the new wave of games coming out.

After all, it's very similar to cars. If you have money you buy performance but also luxury. Sure, you can buy a Pontiac GTO with 400-500 for about $35k, but there's absolutely nothing on that car that can compare to for example Mercedes CLS63 AMG with 507HP, but it goes for around $92k (my next car btw)

If you don't have money to buy 8800Ultra you won't, it's simple as that. You are not basically the target audience that NVidia is going for. I mean it has "Ultra" in the name for a reason, Ultra fast and Ultra pricey

Why don't nVidia start making some half decent drivers for their 8800 series cards instead of making new products!

Agreed, NVIDIA really need to get back on the ball with driver releases for both Windows XP and Windows Vista. I had WAY too many problems with drivers under either operating system to even justify owning a GeForce 8800 card.

Crazy, what's the point right now? I'm still using a Radeon x1600 256MB AGP (anyone remember AGP?) and so far I haven't found a single game it won't play comfortably. I can't see spending over $800 just to have bragging rights.
#12.1 noPCtoday on 03 May 2007 - 04:59
same, im still using nVidia 6600GT AGP, I was thinking of upgrading to a 7600, but then i decided not to. Because I can run my favorite games perfectly now, why would I need a 7600?
(also is there a 7600 AGP version?)
#12.2 Naughty Dog on 03 May 2007 - 05:28
I'm on 7600GT and AGP from socket 754 mobo. noPCToday, goto newegg.com and type XFX 7600GT AGP as I put it and it will redirect you to my exact video card with gddr3, 256 mb ram, 128 bit memory speed, mostly nvidia's 7600 specs that are also on pci-e. However it will cost about 170 usd
#13 chilliadus on 03 May 2007 - 03:42

That's why they are called "enthusiasts" or "hobbyists" instead of "rationalists".

i think i will go with ati offering way cheaper and i am sure its way faster.
#14.1 +Smigit on 03 May 2007 - 05:43
I've never seen anything to suggest ATI's top of the line GPU is cheaper than anti's. Sure $800 is expensive but doing a quick currency calculation in my head (being in Australia) it's no more expensive than the top line last gen cards or the gen before that when they were released.
#15 Nightburn on 03 May 2007 - 06:00
I'd like to point that out AMD/ATI's x2k series is just around the corner with 1gig of ddr4 and 512bit.. Also ATI's drivers have been on the up and up lately..

So for those of you actually in the market for the top of line video card it's probably best to wait for ATI even if you're not going to get an ATI card. Nvidia can charge this $829 because ATI isn't even in the picture right now. Competition will hopefully drive these prices down $100-200 or so. Besides, whats the point??, dx10 games aren't mainstream yet.

It's simply not the time to buy a highend graphics card.
#16 dagamer34 on 03 May 2007 - 06:04
The people who buy these cards are the same people playing games on 30" monitors where the resolution is 2560x1600, AA and AF are turned all the way up, and they pay Intel directly to have the chips from the first wafer spun of their new CPUs.

Everyone else can go home to their "crappy" video cards.

-_-
#17 Croquant on 03 May 2007 - 06:38
I'm sorry, but that's just too much money for a video card, no matter how great the card is.
I'm not made of money.
(1 reply) #18 Unwonted on 03 May 2007 - 06:55
They are introducing them at $800 so they won't have to lower the prices of their current line. BS. But they will have to lower their price on at LEAST the high end part, because it's looking like the 2900s will be approximately as fast as these cards.

Where have you been the last 1-2 weeks? Didn't you get the memo that AMD's high-end, the 2900XTX (which has been delayed to Q3 2007 BTW) has trouble keeping up with the 8800GTX and that the 2900XT is only on a 8800GTS-esque level?

You know there is a reason why AMD's GPUs will be so cheap; they simply cannot keep up with what nvidia is offering for 6 months!

830$ For a overclock?

The best of ATI's next generation card is 450 DOLLARS. And it's better in every single way as well, not just a frequency.

In what ways is that exactly? The lack of performance? The ultra-high power requirements or maybe the high GPU temperature? Oh, I see, you were talking about the new CSAA modes which blur parts of the screen like text.

I guess you're right with your assumption
(3 replies) #25 vacs on 03 May 2007 - 10:47
Guys, remember this card is purely meant for enthusiasts and nobody is forcing you to buy them. The Ultra is for people you like to buy two cards for use in SLI and then overclock them to their limits (new A3 silicon). That's also the reason why this card will not be available in mass.

People shouldn't worry about the price of nvidia's mainstream parts, those will remain the same. The Ultra is a special privilege card for hardcore overclockers, no normal gamers should buy them.

I'll just wait till Nvidia comes out with a 400 Gigaflops memory clock, 40,000 bit, 80,000 pixel shaders, 2TB of video ram, and I still wouldn't be enthused because I need some properly functioning drivers. Since this would be a mainstream GPU, I would probably have to buy the drivers too.
