Nvidia Corporation has introduced the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra, or what it claims to be the world's fastest GPU. The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra performs an average of between 10-15% faster than its "predecessor", the GeForce 8800 GTX GPU. The graphics card features 768MB of onboard memory, a 384-bit wide memory bus and a G80 GPU clocked at 612 MHz (compared to the 8800 GTX’s 576 MHz). It will be available worldwide by May 15 starting at $829. NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card launch partners include Asus, BFG, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, MSI, PNY, Point of View, Sparkle and XFX.

I'm getting married in August so there hasn't been mention of any PC upgrades in over a year. But then again, I've been happy with my specs since I got them. I use lightweight efficient software, keep my start-up entries below 3, Services disabled, disk defragmented, temp/cache cleaned out, registry clean and defragmented, malware/viruses to a constant 0 and my event ID errors to a minimum... so my system runs great.

If you have an awesome 50-60" plasma at full 1080p, you have all the HD goodies out on the market right now, then you probably have spent around $20k-$30k on it anyways. For me personally when these cards come out, i will probably pick up 2 8800 Ultras to play Crysis and all the new upcoming DX10 but also old DX9 games in incredible smoothness at 1920x1080 resolution. I would say 2x8800GTX would do the job, but I think that Ultras will provide that 25% more for the new wave of games coming out.
After all, it's very similar to cars. If you have money you buy performance but also luxury. Sure, you can buy a Pontiac GTO with 400-500 for about $35k, but there's absolutely nothing on that car that can compare to for example Mercedes CLS63 AMG with 507HP, but it goes for around $92k (my next car btw)
If you don't have money to buy 8800Ultra you won't, it's simple as that. You are not basically the target audience that NVidia is going for. I mean it has "Ultra" in the name for a reason, Ultra fast and Ultra pricey

Agreed, NVIDIA really need to get back on the ball with driver releases for both Windows XP and Windows Vista. I had WAY too many problems with drivers under either operating system to even justify owning a GeForce 8800 card.

That's why they are called "enthusiasts" or "hobbyists" instead of "rationalists".
So for those of you actually in the market for the top of line video card it's probably best to wait for ATI even if you're not going to get an ATI card. Nvidia can charge this $829 because ATI isn't even in the picture right now. Competition will hopefully drive these prices down $100-200 or so. Besides, whats the point??, dx10 games aren't mainstream yet.
It's simply not the time to buy a highend graphics card.
Everyone else can go home to their "crappy" video cards.

Where have you been the last 1-2 weeks? Didn't you get the memo that AMD's high-end, the 2900XTX (which has been delayed to Q3 2007 BTW) has trouble keeping up with the 8800GTX and that the 2900XT is only on a 8800GTS-esque level?
You know there is a reason why AMD's GPUs will be so cheap; they simply cannot keep up with what nvidia is offering for 6 months!

In what ways is that exactly? The lack of performance? The ultra-high power requirements or maybe the high GPU temperature? Oh, I see, you were talking about the new CSAA modes which blur parts of the screen like text.
I guess you're right with your assumption
People shouldn't worry about the price of nvidia's mainstream parts, those will remain the same. The Ultra is a special privilege card for hardcore overclockers, no normal gamers should buy them.
I'll just wait till Nvidia comes out with a 400 Gigaflops memory clock, 40,000 bit, 80,000 pixel shaders, 2TB of video ram, and I still wouldn't be enthused because I need some properly functioning drivers. Since this would be a mainstream GPU, I would probably have to buy the drivers too.
Why not for gamers? I wanna run my games in 5000x10000 resolution at 25,000 fps.
