The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that talks between Microsoft Corporation and Yahoo Incorporated, regarding a merger or some sort of deal to fight Google in the online advertising market, are over. People familiar with the situation supposedly believe that although a merger is no longer going to happen, other forms of cooperation are still possible. A year ago, the two companies explored the idea of combining to form a greater competitor to Google, though those talks led nowhere. For now, Yahoo doesn't appear interested in a major deal with Microsoft, say people familiar with the situation.

ComputerWorld, on the other hand, is reporting that analysts are not surprised about the supposed merger or deal and are actually questioning not if, but when it will happen. These particular market analysts believe that Microsoft and Yahoo must do something quickly to fight off the evil Google. They see more advantages than disadvantages of a tie-up between Microsoft and Yahoo but are also quick to point out that a deal between the two companies could pose some huge challenges. It would simply be a headache to integrate the workforces and technologies of two giant companies.

Since Microsoft and Yahoo spokesmen are declining to comment, the fact of the matter is that this is still being labelled as one big rumour. Is a merger in order, is a deal necessary or should the two companies continue to be fierce rivals?

Google buying up all the advertising companies isn't greed?

Microsoft wants to buy companies and people cry monopoly and say it shouldn't be allowed. Google buys everything under the sun and people cheer for it. Google has just as much monopolistic power as Microsoft does.

Amen to that bro!! Personally, I hate/despise Google just because it's so greedy, monopolistic(?), spread so thin and mainly because of all the fanboys associated with it. Same thing with Firefox. I'm an underdog kind of person. Hate companies that just run over everybody else.

Erm... last time I checked Firefox was an underdog. Having about 12-15% marketshare in comparison to Microsoft's 85%+ kind of guarantees that position. You might not like fanboys (who does?) but that doesn't suddenly make Firefox the market leader.

I like Google, they give out free stuff. Competition is good so I hope they all stick around.

If this actually goes through, Apple might have to look elsewhere for its iPhone push e-mail.

Doubt it, MS isn't dumb, that means more users using their stuff. Besides Google CEO is on Apple board of directors, I think we might see a closer bond between those 2 if this goes through.

Haha. helios01: Google gives out free stuff and that's why you like them as a business. You are a big fool. If you've read any interviews with the big 3 behind Google, they are ALWAYS on the look-out for profit opportunities. They have developed a great atmosphere and trust with the public, but they are certainly greedy and what else would you expect. It's the reality of corporations like Google and Microsoft.

how does that make him a fool? Noone is denying the fact google is a profit making business but if his reasons for liking google is they provide services to him that cost him nothing then that doesnt make him a fool.

I like Microsoft and I like their products including the free to use products and services. Does that make me a fool also? I like the fact that they have free services yet that doesnt stop me realising they have an agenda too and that anything that is free is usually to push their branding or income elsewhere. But so what, I still get free email accounts and IM services ect so I'm happy and if I'm a fool for liking or using the services then so be it. At least I'm not going to go about calling other people fools because they like a company that provides services they like/need at no cost to them.

HOLY CRAP PEOPLE!!! WATCH OUT!!! ILLZ55 HAS MADE A STARTLING REVELATION: GOOGLE LOOKING TO MAKE A PROFIT!!

Wow, seriously, what company DOESN'T look to make a profit? Secondly, if you're not making any profit, then you're not going to be around very long, am I right? Also, how is helios a "fool" for liking the free stuff they offer anyway?

I mean, Google hasn't really done anything to let us down anyway, have they? I mean as far as "greed" goes. Sure, they're buying many companies, but that doesn't put a hurt us on OUR end, or at least not yet. They've offered great service, brought along new ideas, and have helped push other companies to innovate and offer more features to compete with Google. As far as I can see, Google's done nothing but make the other company's give us more. Gmail for one; you really think Yahoo and Microsoft had plans to offer more space? Or even change their email platform?

Meh.. I'm not a Google nut really. I just like it when good competition brings us better things.

I hope it doesn't end up with Live Genuine Advantage where the Messenger checks for legal windows and screws everything up. Or that the yahoo homepage is going to be default on IE when they rerelease retail discs with the yahoo logo as well. Lets just see where this goes, it may be like ATI/AMD where everything seems the same except some things are renamed or such.
