More ATI Radeon HD 2600 and HD 2400 Details Unveiled

AMD's next-generation DirectX 10 graphics products, including benchmarks and specifications, have been rumoured, slandered and discussed for quite some time now. The cards are still not out, but more details about them should stall enthusiasts for a bit longer, right? The next generation ATI Radeon HD 2000-series consists of the HD2900, HD2600 and HD2400-series.

The ATI Radeon HD 2600, based on the RV630 core, features 120 stream processing units with three SIMDs and two texture units. There will be two ATI Radeon HD 2600 GPUs: a Pro and XT model with different clock speeds and memory requirements. AMD and add-in board partners will offer a variety of ATI Radeon HD 2600-based graphics cards including variations with GDDR4, GDDR3 and DDR2 memory in 512MB or 256MB configurations with or without video input and output capabilities.

The ATI Radeon HD 2400 features 40 stream processors joined by two SIMDs and one texture unit. AMD plans to offer the ATI Radeon HD 2400 in Pro and LE models with varying configurations as well as 256MB or 128MB of video memory. Add-in board manufacturers are free to set the output configuration, including VGA, dual-link DVI, video input/output, HDMI and DMS-59 outputs on ATI Radeon HD 2400-based graphics cards.

Benchmarks? And what happened to the 2900XTX??

Am starting to give up on AMD/ATi. They are so secretive lately and its putting me off buying from them. I am getting more and more inclined to go and by 8800GTX OC.

And NVIDIA and Intel go around talking about their future plans? It's a large corporation, it's bound to protect its property. The fact that AMD stands out more than the rest is because of the merge with ATi and cpu race with Intel.

I think what he's trying to say is that they don't seem to have anything special to beat the competition with. While Intel keeps talking about how fast their next generation processors are, when the current ones trounce AMD as it is, AMD has remained very quiet. They haven't said anything that indicates they have a fighting chance any time soon.

AMD just announced new brand line (Phenom). They have a different multi-core technology. How is that not an indication? Yes, they are lagging because of ATi merge, but they are still standing solid despite all the profit lose. If you look at pre-Athlon era, it was worse than it is now, yet they managed to show Intel a good fight.

New Intel cpus are great, no doubt about that, but Intel is not the winner yet. Right now they are battling "old" AMD technology, and although they win in benchmarks and whatnot, it's not that much of a win. It will be a different story once AMD rolls out their new line.

I wonder why they chose to go with such low model numbers, for the uninformed consumer a Radeon 2600 sounds vastly inferior to a Radeon 9600 (yeah they put HD in the name but still). If they keep going this route will they get back up to the Radeon 7000 range? Deja Vu...

People can remember without a trouble just 4 numbers, so a 10040 is quite hard to remember, easy to confuss and don't work with the guys of marketing. So they decided to start with a new brand :"radeon HD" and a new secuence.

At the AMD/MS Tech Tour, they had the AMD CPU guy also cover graphics, and he admitted it wasn't his specialty. No discussion of graphics performance (other than onboard graphics in the new IGA chipset). He did explain the dual-link hdmi with integrated audio, which sounded nice.
