With the launch of Windows Live Hotmail, Microsoft has announced Windows Live Mail, the desktop client that is reportedly meant to succeed Outlook Express and Vista’s Windows Mail by replacing Windows Live Mail desktop, currently in beta. The first beta build of Windows Live Mail, available in a few short weeks, is supposed to incorporate features of all three of the aforementioned applications.
With the name change there are a few features that will be added to the current WLMd software. First off, an improved user interface with Aero support will give you control of your e-mail, without any graphical advertisements. Note that the loophole for textual ads was left wide open. Setup and account migration improvements should cut down the steps to get started with the client. Taking from OE and WM, S/MIME and LDAP support will be added to WLM. The new client is also being touted as faster and more robust than WLMd. As before, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista will be the two supported operating systems.

Maybe nLite.
That just removes the Outlook Express shortcuts.

Yep. Using the "Add/Remove Windows Components" entry for OE doesn't actually add or remove much of anything.
Don't believe me? Try uninstalling OE and then using a function that calls the OE executable or any of it's libraries. Hey, look at that: OE is still installed on your system after you told windows to uninstall it.
No wonder the EU is perpetually hauling Microsoft's ass into court. If I could, I would too!
IN OTHER NEWS, Mozilla Thunderbird just became the email client of choice. When asked for comment, a Mozilla Foundation spokesperson was heard to exclaim: "Bwhaaaa haaaa haaaaa..." before she gleefully threw a handful of darts at an Outlook Express promotional poster. Opera spokespersons could not be reached for comment.
I'll be moving to TBird if the WLM version we get is not ad-free.

hmm yeah, that active search really kills it off ..was hoping a-patch might do something about it soon ...
First the former Windows Live Mail has been renamed Windows Live Hotmail.
Now the former Windows Live Mail desktop has "desktop" dropped from it.
Despite this naming confusion, I'll look forward to the new beta. And yes for anyone complaining about ads in current day WLMd, there is a patch to remove it written by the same guy behind A-Patch.
I think overall Outlook is the best but if you want a pure mail clint then for many the cost and extra weight of outlook comparred to smaller clients isnt worth it.
I thought that the new Windows Live Mail Desktop has been out in beta for over a year? Are they scrapping the current beta program and creating a new one?
