Julie Marto of Medfield, Massachusetts, purchased a Dell Inspiron notebook running Windows XP last October. Through a program called Express Upgrade, she was promised a free copy of Windows Vista when the operating system became commercially available. It's been five months since Vista went on sale January 30. Marto is still waiting and steaming mad.
"I've done everything I can to get my Vista upgrade including e-mailing a request to Michael Dell himself," Marto says. She says she never received a reply from Michael Dell. Marto isn't alone. Since PC World originally reported problems back in March with the Vista upgrade program, people have continued to send us e-mail and post complaints to our community forums citing paperwork nightmares, Vista upgrade disc no-shows, and long hold times when trying to contact vendors or third-party companies handling the upgrades. One company handling the Vista Express Upgrades, ModusLink, acknowledges some problems persist, but maintains most customers have received their Vista upgrade discs by now. Dell complaints have been filtering into PC World, but can also be found by scanning the company's support forum.

I do, it's actually less than 3 and a half months.....
That logic is quite faulty. Perhaps your gf is part of the small minority that actually did receive the upgrade.

... and that logic is also faulty. Unless there are specific numbers you cannot say that you are a majority or a minority regarding getting the Vista Upgrade. My wife got hers from Sony right on time, no problems.
The truth is, even if they don't like Vista, if it's free, people will ask for it.

my mate got his vista disc about 2-3 weeks ago - i emailed dell to say where is mine? their answer was "they are being sent out in order of purchase"
so obviously i go fkin mental at them, and get a 2nd response, saying that they are having to update the disc to include better drivers or something, and will be with me shortly. this version will be much better!
bullsh*t!! And doesn't explain why it is my friend who is using vista right now instead of me

You didnt receive a reply Mr Delll what a surprise! I would think he has beter things to do with his time. Perhaps you should have been contacting Moduslink the company that actually dealt with the VISTA upgrade.
Besides, she doens't even know if Dell is to blame. Microsoft arranged for a third party to handle express upgrades to Vista, didn't they? So it is Microsoft's fault, this third party or Dell? Who knows?
But its sad these people have nothing better to do than whine and cry over an upgrade that's taking a little longer than they wanted. If it makes them this upset, take the computer back for a refund and go the way of the Mac. Or Linux. See how happy they are then.
I hope Michael sends over a crate of Kleenex for all the crying this woman's done.
That was from the original email I got that confirmed my order. I emailed them back last week asking where my order was (I bought two laptops at the same time, two Vista copies should be coming), here is the reply I got.
Your order have not been lost. They have been validated and are awaiting the shipping process. We will notify you when your order is shipped. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Still Waiting.....................
(get Vista, find out it won't run crap, upgrade slows system down even more)
/throw fit like Yosemite Sam
I have a very pedestrian system here (Athlon 64 4000+, 1GB RAM, 80 GB HD, GeForce 6800-GT) and Vista runs circles around XP and XP64. It's the first OS upgrade I've done where things actually run FASTER.
So, stop believing all of the MS-hater diatribes and rhetoric - it makes one look awfully foolish.

Gotta love these M$ Employee/Fan-Adicks that can't admit that Vista isn't worth upgrading to (for most people) and is mostly likely nothing but a buggy resource hog for those that competently have been running stripped-down, lean & mean XP systems.
I smell *FEAR* & *PANIC* among the Bill Gates/M$ faithful...
First they lose the things i set them, so I re-send and finally the order is cleared and waits to be shipped.. and now it has been cancelled.. and i sent my order some time in january
