Attorneys general from eight states want MySpace to turn over the names of potentially thousands of registered sex offenders who may be members of its popular social networking site. In a May 14 letter to MySpace, the attorneys general from Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania said they are "gravely concerned" that sexual predators are using the Web site to lure children to meet them offline. They asked MySpace to tell them how many registered sex offenders they've identified on the site and what the company is doing to remove them.
The officials also want to know what MySpace has done to alert its users who have communicated with the sex offenders as well as what the company has done to alert law enforcement. They gave MySpace until May 29 to respond. The attorneys general said they believe that data from Sentinel Tech Holdings, a company working with MySpace to identify sex offenders, indicates that thousands of sex offenders are MySpace members. Err, if they aren't grooming then they have as much right as anybody else to be on the site. Perhaps they have a nice collection of stamps they'd like to share with the world.
Discriminating against any person based on supposition, the inference that as they have been judged guilty of something (even if that judgement was draconian) they're going to continually repeat that act, and a self-aggrandising soapboxing "get me re-elected" stance is surely against the oh-so-beloved First Amendment everybody is so keen to espouse whenever they feel they've been told to STFU.
Next we'll have a "ban Iraqis" (if that hasn't happened already) as they're all terrorists, right?

Your second paragraph is just one long run-on sentence that makes no sense.
Bad example. All sex offenders have done something to deserve it. States have laws that confine these offenders. Not all Iraqis have done something bad.
Why would they want their names? Surely they have them already?

Not true. It doesn't matter if it was cosecantual (sp) or not. If you are over 18 and they are younger then 18 it's a sexual offence. There is a kid in prison for having sex with his underage girlfriend right now and people are really upset because he's in prison because of it.

That is true in some cases, but sexual consent, in the U.S. anyways, is a state by state issue. World wide, it differs from country to country. In the U.S. AoC can vary anywhere from 16 up to 18 depending on what state you are in.

Very true.
My cousin was dating and having sex with a 40 year old man when she 16. Her father beat the hell out of the guy and when it went to court the judge asked if she had concented to sex and she said yes. The case was dropped and her father was brought up on battery charges.
But so what? You ban these people off the site, do you really think they won't find another way there? And what about all the people who are potential sex offenders waiting to happen? Besides, MySpace *shudder* is just one haven for these "people", there are many more sites out there.
The solution, really, is education. Adults with half a brain know that MySpace is not a "place for friends" and should understand the potential risks of posting personal information on a website, especially one with no privacy controls like MySpace. Kids need to be taught how to be on the web safely and not to give out information about themselves, especially photos, unless they know the person. Kids also need to have their usage monitored, at least when they're younger.
