To accompany Google Trends, which show the popularity of search terms in relation to each other over time, Google has now released a new feature dubbed Hot Trends. Hot trends, as its name implies, provides the hottest current searches updated throughout the day. For each Hot Trend, there are results from Google News, Google Blog Search and web search, which help explain why the search is hot. Hot Trends also allows viewing of what queries were hot on a particular day.

You may think Hot Trends comprises of the search terms people look for most often. It doesn’t. Instead, the Hot Trends algorithm analyzes millions of searches to find those that are deviating the most relative to their past traffic. Hot Trends is currently available only in English, but there are future plans for international versions. Hot Trends is replacing the weekly Google Zeitgest list, although monthly and annual lists will still be provided for each country. In addition to Hot Trends, Google Trends now allows viewing of "subregions" (e.g. states within the U.S.) across more than 70 countries.

Awesome. I am simply amazed that Google can crunch all this query data in real time.
May be they are using a sampling technique instead of processing all the data.

Some of the queries are incredulous. How can lots of people be searching for :"what part of a graduate’s costume gave the cordon bleu cooking school its name" ?

I don't want to see another "Google launches..." post for at least a year, they'll kill themselves by doing all these new things when the old ones arent even finished yet. Google rocks but I want them to stay.

It's not like Google stops doing some things while doing others -- they have several teams working in parallel. So it's not really a problem, as little as Microsoft focusing on the lots of Windows Live! services while at the same time doing a whole operating system and office suite, and game consoles. Heck, Google is probably doing less than that when taking the sum of the effort. I don't see any special ill effects coming from this. Google Trends in this case works as advertised, and I have no special trouble with Gmail either, nor their web search, or things like Google Earth or Picasa.

Ahh, so that's why they had taken the time to make some minor revisions to the "regular" Google Trends site as well, the one at http://www.google.com/trends

Mostly layout changes, like having all regional info on one page instead of in tabs, but some minor new features too.

I notice a relative lack of any "adult content". I think thats the edited list and the real one has about 500 terms relating to other things that don't require mentioning comming above anything listed there.

heh all this is doing is just catching the popular searches at the time that isn't something like britney spears/lindsey lohan. yahoo already does something similar i believe.
