No new Internet cafes to be licensed in China

The Chinese government has announced that it will not license any new Internet cafes this year while regulators carry out an industry-wide inspection: investigators will look into whether Internet cafes are improperly renting out their licenses or failing to register their customers' identities. "Industry and commerce bureaus at all levels must not license any new Internet cafes in 2007," said a notice on the State Administration for Industry and Commerce Web site. Internet cafes are hugely popular with customers who spend hours playing online games that link multiple competitors.

The communist government encourages Web use for business and education, but authorities are worried it gives children access to violent games, sexually explicit material and gambling Web sites. China has the world's second-largest population of Internet users, with 137 million people online, and is on track to surpass the United States as the largest online population in two years. The government tries to block access to online material deemed obscene or subversive.

I wonder how long until the European Union, the US and all other western nations, are like this ... it won't be long, I imagine China might be free before we are again.

Yeah and every day the EU is taking it away from me ... I for one am certain in the last 20 years we have lost a lot of freedoms, meanwhile the Chinese are slowly gaining them, but what the hell - rule Europa.

France and Germany block internet content, I'm suprised Frau Merkel hasn't pushed some of this through the EU, our only hope is the decent countries in Eastern Europe who have lived under a communist regime instead of trying to build one, are smart enough to not make the EU into todays Soviet Union.

In fact all countries have banned topics. And you have as much freedom as you can defend by yourself. In some countries you will be labelled traitor if you say anything negative about government. In UK you can be labelled as homophobic, racist and put into prison if you just open your mouth and say something bad about some social group. Some people will rip your eyes and press will exaggerate scandal from it before you make attempt to back your opinion with official statistics. It is because some people lost real definitions of terms but got smart enough to abuse law to terrorise people they don't like. People started to treat negative opinions as prejudice or discrimination. Stupidity is biggest threat to freedom of society and there is no country which is safe from that.

What the f are you talking about? When people from Europe, Canada, USA make ignorant comments as you just did it is such a huge insult to the billions around the world that never knew a second of freedom in their lives...never had any rights to lose in the first place. Im sorry dude but you suck. As an American Ive never been more free, never had more rights, theres never been a time in the history of humans on this planet that such a large population of people have had the freedom and rights we,the western world, have today. Now maybe France and Germany block some things, but you have the power to change that in those countries..the people in China have no hope of that at all! Stop electing these ultra socialist politicians and watch your freedoms return. Ultimately its your fault you lose freedoms in a democratic society. You have the power and stop your motherf'n whinning! God f'n bless America!

Please, don't involve billions by creating imaginary insults.

Yeah, you are free and have same rights as Saddam Hussein in his own palace.

All of us feel free, until we shout same slogans as masses around us. Try to express very unpopular opinions on the streets full of rednecks (Clue: go to country side of Texas dressed as gay with banner - "I am Communist. I think, America sux!" ). Also you are free to say anything until you are considered as no threat to powerful people, otherwise they will try to find any way to shut you up. To say that there is 100% democracy is as same as to say that there is 0% crime. Fight for freedoms is infinite - because everyone wants as much power as he can get.

But I agree that now we have best rights in the history of humans on this planet.

Please..... comparing China's Uber-restrictions against freedom of speech/information (which is what this is really all about) to the US or even the EU is ridiculous. Please tell us you're joking.

Ah yes, when France does it - its really just the government looking out for its subjects, thats so nice of them.

Please how any one can talk of China and ignore what the Germans do and the power Frau Merkel has over Europe these days is beyond me, censorship is censorship.

At least you can say the word 'countdown' in an airport in China without getting tackled by fifty security guards.

.. at least, I think you can... hmm.... *departs for airport in china*

Let's focus on the gaming aspect of this issue. Chinese kids play excessive amounts of games. American kids also do. While western cultures see it as basic entertainment, the chinese see it as a social epidemic because kids should not be wasting time and money on mindless entertainment. I am a chinese american and I very much applaud these new internet cafe crackdowns because I saw my own school grades (in the US) plummet after getting addicted to these places... If the U.S. took these things as seriously as the Chinese does, this country's youth would be a lot less decadent. Go figure.

Oh, please: Get real.
The real reason China's cracking down on internet cafes is because they don't want their citizens to be able to read about Democracy, Tienanmen Square, and other Verboten phrases.
It's the Great Firewall Of China, and it's at it again.

That is the real reason and for you to blow it off absolutely sucks! The level of ignorance is just sickening. You have no idea whats going on in this world do you? Its amazing you just blow it off like that. I have Chinese neighbors that are recent imigrants and they would spit in your face if you blew the situation off like that. You dont have a friggin clue.

I'm not an American, and I'll thank you not to assume such.

err no next year its the olympics so they need to clean.

I'm almost sure you never went through the private server scene with a few chineses , at least 3-4 years ago any internet cafe in china would have 4-6 games on lan for the ppl to enjoy instead of going online and playing like they should ( The9 and similar companys there should be asking also for a sweep , and if you remember the last story about schools hosting porn and date sites ... its all normal )

it makes me laugh having ppl thinking that china is the land of bad things and comunism is bad

to the comment about elections and if you're from the US ( err did you guys finally found who won the elections , where they fair - Florida rings a bell ? Bush another Bell )

P.s.: no i'm not chinese

p.s: after reading the other comments i've already noticed you're european - so i can tell you you can move to the south europe , there's plenty space , no internet restriions , no computer games restrictions ( german versions without blood alike )

Only ignorant fools who have no concept of how the electoral college works actually believe that George Bush lost the election. Were there problems in some places? Yes, but that is to be expected when everyone, regardless of their intelligence level, is allowed to vote. Was there any clear evidence of widespread corruption? No. The only people you still hear bitching about it are the sore losers (Democrats) who even after nearly a decade can't seem to understand that they are not going to win the electoral vote in much of the South and Midwest. They can get the Northeast and West Coast, but unfortunately even with California's massive number of electoral votes that just isn't enough.
