In case you missed it, Adobe Systems recently released an updated version of its Acrobat document creation software. The company has said that Acrobat 8.1 is built to be fully compatible with Vista and all Office 2007 applications. "Both PDF as a file format and Acrobat as an application are now 'first class citizens' in these environments," said Acrobat developer Lori DeFurio.

Among other things, Acrobat will now be able to take advantage of a Windows Vista feature that allows users to preview documents without actually opening them, DeFurio said. Professional and standard editions of the software are available as a free download for existing Acrobat users. Acrobat 8.0 shipped in November, prior to the January debut of Windows Vista and Office 2007, and as a result is not fully compatible with the products.

I just upgraded my Acrobat 8.0 Standard (on a Windows 2003 system) to v8.1, which was just released. I don't know if it will work on Vista, but I'll bet that it will.

It only took them less than a year to fix the compatibility issues, lol.

Yes, however Vista HAD already been released to manufacturing by the time that Acrobat 8 shipped. Adobe's development teams have gotten increasingly slow over the years. Look how long it took them to ship a Universal Binary version of Creative Studio on the Mac! Then again, they did manage to get that shipped before Microsoft managed to ship a Universal version of Office.

Actually, looking at the press release sections of both Adobe's and Microsoft's websites, Adobe Acrobat 8.0 shipped earlier than Windows Vista was released to manufacturing. Acrobat 8 was announced on September 18, 2006, so it had already gone final in Adobe's lab at that time, as some early reviews started to appear for it within a few weeks of this date. This puts it a full 51 days (over 7 weeks) in between Acrobat 8 being final and Vista being released to manufacturing. In fact, Windows Vista RC2 came out later than Adobe announced Acrobat 8.

This update from Adobe is very important, as they haven't touched the code in Acrobat 8 since September, long before the releases of Windows Vista and Office 2007..

Now I'm just waiting for RyanVM to release a switchless installer.
For those that don't know who RyanVM is, what Autopatcher is to a fully installed XP machine, RyanVM is to a unattended installation.

Note that Office 2007 has the ability (through a free MS download) to save PDF files from within Word, etc. So, unless you need to edit PDF files in their native format, avoid the excessively overpriced full version of Adobe Acrobat if you already own Office 2007.

That's right, but Adobe plugin for Office also generates a nice table of contents which the MS plugin doesn't.

The plugin for Office 2007 saves in PDF 1.4 (Acrobat 5.0) format, so any features (including some very nice compression, accessibility, and security features) that have been introduced in Acrobat 6.0, 7.0, or 8.0 will not be available with the plugin.

Anbody who purchases Adobe Acrobat Standard or Professional only for the Microsoft Word plugin is insane. The program has so many capabilities beyond converting PDF to DOC and DOC to PDF.

I seem to remember the original press releases from Adobe were implying they would not support Windows Vista with the 8.x series of Adobe, which probably ****ed off a lot of people and forced them to work on a 8.1 patch. Personally, I think it would be horrible to ask someone to purchase a new version for Vista compatibility.

As for the differences with the new version, maybe this will be helpful to someone... taken from http://www.adobe.com/go/kb401730 ...which has a detailed change log from 8.0 to 8.1.

On Windows Vista, I still don't see PDF Preview in Preview Pane in Windows Explorer. Using just Adobe Reader 8.1 here.
