AT&T quietly offers $10 DSL plan

AT&T Incorporated has started offering a broadband Internet service for $10 a month, cheaper than any advertised plan. The DSL plan introduced Saturday is part of the concessions made by AT&T to the Federal Communications Commission to get its $86 billion acquisition of BellSouth Corporation approved last December. The $10 offer is available to customers in the 22-state AT&T service region, which includes former BellSouth areas, who have never had AT&T or BellSouth broadband, confirmed spokesman Michael Coe. Local phone service and a one-year contract are required. The modem is free.

On the AT&T Web site, a page describing DSL options doesn't mention it, but clicking a link for "Term contract plans" reveals the new offer. It's also presented to customers who go into the application process, Coe said. The service provides download speeds of up to 768 kilobits per second and upload speeds of up to 128 kbps, matching the speeds of the cheapest advertised AT&T plan. The agreement with the FCC required the company to offer the plan for at least 2 1/2 years. Another concession to the FCC is yet to come: a plan for DSL that doesn't require local phone service. AT&T has another six months to introduce that option, which should cost at most $19.95 per month.

I work for a promotion ordering company that is contracted to AT&T and we can't offer this... ours is $14.99 so I'm loosing sales (and commission) to this... although it's nice to learn exactly what these people were talking about when they said the $10.99 plan.

I have the $17.99 plan from Verizon, good deal I think but this $10 dollars plan from AT&T is even better

I want more competition... AT&T need to come to Maryland

Verizon and Comcast here are either sluggish or outrageously overpriced. Last Christmas I compare to Europe : price in US are 3 times higher for DSL, TV, phone combo... the "old continent" seems not so old these days.

Paying $17.99 for 3000/512 right now from AT&T and would actually want more speed.

The $10 plan is great for the last dialup users though.

I pay $24.95 for the 6000/640. I signed up for the basic service and upgraded 11 months later to what I have now for $10 more. I wish they'd increase the upload speeds. We have FIOS lines over here but so far it's not being offered.

$17.99 for 3000/512?
$24.95 for the 6000/640?

What ISPs are those? Is it available in California?

I'm in Houston as well, and I got this same plan (768kbps) for $12.95/mo. Not too much a difference here.

wow, kudos to the FCC for this mandate...yes its not a blistering speed but for the older internet crowd (our parents and grandparents) its great for them to check email and such...$10 a month is a real stab at any exisiting dial up
#5.1 +Dakkaroth on 21 Jun 2007 - 19:23
What're you talking about? I run this very same plan for about $12.95/mo from them. I play all the internet games just dandy, as well as download just fine. No bad pings here, and this is coming from an internet gamer. ;O

I'd just be happy if they would FINALLY offer naked DSL
#6.1 ghos on 20 Jun 2007 - 20:35
Exactly! Many of us don't want the burden of a home phone since we use cell phones. They can do it but for some reason no one has really been offering it. I guess they know many won't go for the phone service if they do. I'd sacrifice a little speed if it was half the price I'm paying now for cable. But as it stands right now I have to have a home phone and so any savings on the DSL price is offset by having to also pay for a phone I don't need.
Maybe this competition will also lower cable rates which have been too high for awhile now.

i current have yahoo at&t dsl ... for 14.95 per month for 384k down/up (basically 40KB/s) (supposed to be the "upto 768k" plan even though it only connnects at 384k)
#8 Galley on 20 Jun 2007 - 01:31
Free modem? I had to pay $150 for mine.
#9 Croquant on 20 Jun 2007 - 01:49
Well, I suppose it's an acceptable speed for the occasional websurfer, but anyone who sufts hard or downloads files is gonna be disappointed, even if it is only ten bucks a month.

Is it just me, or can I not find the link anywhere

Damn. AT&T has some good pricing if you can get:
$17.99 for 3000/512?
$24.95 for the 6000/640?

That's awesome.

i still want FiOS.... come to my area!
#13 Foub on 20 Jun 2007 - 10:08
Remember, you get what you pay for. Nothing says that the quality has to be good, only that they have to provide it. It probably is going to be like when some "work to order" when they are compelled to. Like following the letter instead of the intent.

a plan for DSL that doesn't require local phone service.

Sweet, I finally won't have to pay $29.99 to my local phone mafi..er, company for service. That's ridiculous for 768k.
#15 Angel Blue01 on 20 Jun 2007 - 16:25
I hope they can offer this in Quest and Verizon-controlled areas and vice versa, they all need the competition.
#16 Mike Frett on 20 Jun 2007 - 17:41
My goodness you guys have it good. I'm getting ripped off! 3000/512 @ $70/month.

You lucky jokers!
#17 fevoldj2 on 20 Jun 2007 - 19:20
I pay $40 for 16000 1000
