Neowin has an old picture of Bill. He looks like someone's grandpa in this day in age.

I think that knighthood was for upgrading the UK's medical systems into a bugridden mess. MS walked away with tons of cash and left hospitals with less than they started with.

to be recognized for his business skills and for his work on poverty reduction.

He and his wife, who have three children, are also known for their charitable work.

As well as investing millions in research for an Aids vaccine, their foundation has also established a scholarship scheme to enable the brightest students to go to Cambridge University.

so what has your OS creator done to help others less fortunate?

Red Dragon, please tell me you're joking with that baseless comment.

This story is just asking for trouble.

I met Bill Gates when he was in Montreal in 2002 for bridge.

But suffice it to say, Gates really is a humanitarian. Let's just forget about Windows for 1 minute and realize all the stuff he is doing to better the world outside of computing.

He deserves it all.

Isn't it ironic that the two riches men in the world get more joy out of giving their money away than in making it.
#6.1 MrCobra on 25 Jun 2007 - 06:49
He has stated time and time again that just because he was in the right place at the right time doesn't mean that it should only benefit himself.

on a site called neoWIN

Who wouldda thunk it
#8.2 black_death on 24 Jun 2007 - 17:44
If neowin was "gatesian" I dont think wed be seeing a news post about every single time Steve Jobs has a press conference or when some magazine journalist wants to brag about how nice the screen on his macbook is.
#8.3 C_Guy on 26 Jun 2007 - 03:15
Brief list of worhty accomplishments... propaganda.... Yeah that's the same

If you're that upset over it submit a list of Job's accomplishments and I'm sure it will be posted, too. Remind me, how much has Steve given to charitable efforts and causes?

Those are NOT little known facts - some of them are common knowledge. I'm all for interesting articles with collections of trivia, particularly about someone as important in the computer industry as Bill Gates, but this is just a blatant excuse to promote someone's blog. The more blogs that are incorporated into the main page the less the content can be trusted and the less verifcation there is on the information presented. I am not in favour of this editorial decision.

Why Bill rocks and is a true humanitarian:
As of 2006, the foundation (Gates and Melinda ...) has an endowment of approximately US$33.7 billion.

Why others who are as fortunate as him don't even compare:
Walmart: The Walton family has given an estimated 1% of their wealth to charity, but made 3.2 million in political contributions in 2004 alone. The Walton family received a federal tax cut of $91,500 for every hour of the 2004 tax year.

He is really a great man.
#12 TheBigB on 24 Jun 2007 - 22:04
i personally have little to no respect for much of microsoft (though they are turning that around a lot with their web 2.0 efforts and their encouraging of people to use their products rather than forcing them) but bill gates does deserve a LOT of respect. i really feel he is a nice man and uses his knowledge for good. those who feel he's the reason microsoft does a lot of bad don't understand that even though he can go down to anyone in microsoft and say "you're fired" that's actually not his business. his job is all the high level stuff whereas the lower guys in different departments take care of the other stuff. there are things about microsoft he doesn't like but he can't change them. he has the ability but he'd be taking the time he has to do his job to do someone else's.
#13 warr on 25 Jun 2007 - 03:24
you would do the same if you were in the same situation.

#15 randomnut on 25 Jun 2007 - 22:06
Gates is a really good guy. Its that ass Balmer thats the problem. If they just got rid of him they would go in the right direction, he is just a complete tw*t.
#16 C_Guy on 26 Jun 2007 - 03:17
One thing I really respect about Bill is you never see him running around tooting his own horn. Guess he's too busy giving back to the world to do that
#17 David3k on 27 Jun 2007 - 14:50
