Dell introduced new notebook computers on Tuesday available in eight different colors with advanced features as it tries to grab a bigger slice of the consumer PC market.

The world's second-largest personal computer maker also launched its first consumer PC to use flash memory instead of a traditional hard-disk drive to store data. The lightweight laptop comes with a modest 32 gigabytes of data storage space.

Dell's new notebooks, to be unveiled at an event at Macy's flagship store in Herald Square in New York, come in colors with names such as flamingo pink, sunshine yellow, alpine white, ruby red, jet black, midnight blue and espresso.

An entry-level version of the notebook PC costs $749 and is available from Tuesday.

Prices look good, components look good. But the laptops themselves look like cheap plastic. I wish Dell would offer some sort of upgrade to the case itself. I would pay for it a s an option if they would offer some sort of composite material. Carbon fiber, magnesium anything

They do offer a magnesium chassis system, but not for the home user. You can get the ATG model on their small business site, but you'll definately pay more, and there aren't any video upgrades, only onboard Intel.
So, if it's for work, here ya go, if it's for gaming, sorry, you're outta luck at Dell.

actually, the new cases are magnesium alloy, I have NO idea why it is not featured on the site. But it is in all the material they have trained thier representatives with

Amazingly, the Apple Macbook Pro offers a very competitive price as compared to a similarly configured new Dell laptop

ahh, *the same* troll - LTD.

I dislike Dell laptops as much as the next man, but there is a way of addressing a topic without making yourself sound foolish (which you have successfully done - well done!

Damn! The XPS M1210's successor looks freaking slick.

(On second thought: the power switch is in a BAD position. One can accidentally power on the laptop when it's in their bag. And the media buttons? Uhh... I think I prefer how the media buttons are placed on the outside on my M1210.)

Hmm Cool I just configured a green inspiron with a 15.4 screen and 1440 x 900 resolution with 2 gigs ram 160 gig hdd and core 2 duo 5250 processor and nvidia 8600gt gpu for $1668 thats not a bad price.

I think I might get one

IS the 8600gt worth the $100 more then the 8400 gs?

I believe they have different memory size (128 and 256)..... But as barefeats has tested, the performance gain does not justify the price... But hey, if you have some dollars to spend, just take the 256 MB one...

What's your screen size and resolution BTW?

15.4 and 1440 x 900

I dont know wich gpu to chose. I just saw a benchmark where the 8600gt scored 3,000 something points and the 8400m scored 1456 in 3dmark 06

I dont know if I should buy the 8600 gt $100 dollars is alot of extra money but those scores are alot higher.

Anybody have any other reviews of these two new processors?

Oh my bad... I forgot that barefeats was comparing the same type of GPU only with different VRAM...

Spend the 100 bucks. You'll be happy in a year or two when your laptop is still giving "acceptable" performance.

WOW! A small lappy with HDMI!

A small qn, does the HDMI comes with Intel X3100? or only with nvidia?

On a similar note, has anyone seen this?

is the geforce go 7900 gs comparable to the 8600m gt card they are offering?
#10 majortom1981 on 26 Jun 2007 - 15:24
Looks like nobody knows lol. The one review I saw showed the 8600 gt about double the speed of the 8400gs . Do you guys think double the speed is worth the extra $100. Keep in mind that both can be used to adda blue ray drive if configured.

I wonder how the SSD will increase performance. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

I am curious how the 8600GT compares to the 7800 gtx...without going to the 8950 (or w/e) which is a big jump in price, theres nothing i have seen yet that is better most laptops offer 7900gs which isnt as good...so hopefully they will be getting better vid cards now! 30 days left on this laptop warranty, time for a new one!

After a quick search, it looks like the 8600GT might be on par with 7800gtx, maybe little better or a little worse, but right around the same...so not really yet worth the upgrade for me dang!

The thing that confuses me is why is it that i can get a better video card in an inspiron laptop then an xps laptop. The 8600gt is only available in the inspiron.

I dont know IF i want a smaller pc with an led display and less pwoerfull over all or a 15.4 inch display with a regular display but more pwoerfull over all.
#13.1 linsook on 26 Jun 2007 - 19:47
you can't compare the two. one is obviously made more for gaming than the other. for people who want portability and the ability to lightly game. the xps is a great solution. as a competitor with an asus w7s and sony sz's. it's a great alternative and being cheaper aswell. (i own a w7j and am very impressed with the m1330)
#14 Relativity_17 on 26 Jun 2007 - 20:38
I'm impressed with these, both in design and in capability. Dell has made large strides towards making the new XPS line look like plausible professional hardware...at least, the black or grey versions.

"Dell adds new notebook PCs to boost consumer sales"
