Two makers of perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) platters for hard disk drives (HDDs) said recently they had started to produce platters with leading capacities that enable creation of 1TB hard drives for desktops as well as up to 320GB drives for mobile computers.

Both Fuji Electric Group and Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) this week said they had begin shipments of 334GB platters for 3.5” hard drives as well as 160GB platters for 2.5” HDDs to their customers. The 334GB platters are already utilized by Samsung’s SpinPoint F1 hard disk drives, but unfortunately it is unclear whether 160GB platters are already used by the companies’ customers.

I dont need more storage on my laptop, I want a SSD drive, seriously, why does someone need so much storage on a portable device? Ill gladly take 64 gig SSD for another 30-60 mins of battery life...

Because some of us in the consulting business have a lot of data to deal with when we go to several different clients, and our laptops ARE our office. Yes, we carry externals as well, but seriously, dealing with a ton of applications, development, etc. is still a necessity to have in one place for some.

I need and want 500 GB drives. I currently suffer with only 2 x 320 GB drives. I need 500 GB drives to expand my capability to test more OSes on VMs.

My notebook currently runs the following OSes for software testing on a daily basis:
1. W2K3 EE X64 server
2. Vista Ultimate X64
3. XP Pro (32-bit)
4. W2K8 X64
5. RHEL ES 5.1 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Enterprise Server)
6. VMware Workstation 6: VMs: Solaris 10 X64, W2K8 X32, W2K3 X32, Debian Linux, RHEL ES 5.1

Not everyone plays with movies, music, games, and porn.

I tend to agree, for home users anyway. A small SSD + an external HDD is the best solution for a laptop. With business laptops the current SSD size is a bit to low. Where I work 60GB is a minimum. But it's just a matter of time before we get 80GB and 100GB.

Just as I feel about the desktop drives, why are they getting bigger and not faster? I mean average laptops are still only 5400rpm.

the faster the drive rotates... the more power it consumes...

And there is a lot more to speed then just RPM. if you look at desktop drives there is a huge range in performance between all the 7200RPM drives. If you think all 7200RMP drives are the same speed or even similar you are mistaken.

I'm aware but it's a good start. I know cache size makes a difference too but I don't think there are any to make a noticeable difference

Why don't they make laptops that are solar powered and save up a reserver for when it gets dark...
I just thought of that when one of you mentioned battery life.

Yea not exactally a thought out plan. More glass is definatly not what id want in a laptop plus its not good to have a laptop exposed to direct sunlight,in which is what a solar powered device needs.

But back on topic, As a DJ a drive of this size would come in handy in more ways than i can think of , it would eliminate having to carry around extra storage with me when travling to a gig here and there. Cant wait til this comes out.
