Google Inc. plans to launch a Linux version of Google Desktop on Wednesday, almost three years after the product's launch for the Windows operating system. The application, designed for indexing and finding data in PCs, as well as for searching the Web, also comes in a Mac OS X version, introduced in April of this year.

Like the Mac OS X version, Google Desktop for Linux is a beta, or test, product. The Windows version shed its beta tag already, meaning Google considers it a more stable and mature product. At this point, Google Desktop for Linux does not feature the Sidebar and Gadget features present in the Windows version. Gadgets are mini-applications that display things such as e-mail, weather data, photos and news on the desktop. The Sidebar is a vertical panel where the Gadgets can be organized.

Same as with NeroLinux: I'm certainly not interested, but some people might like it.

Anyone know if there are any advantages to using this instead of Beagle (except the fact that Beagle uses Mono)?

I'll pass. Always good to see more software is working its way onto the Linux platform though.

This better integrate into the search boxes in Linux like Beagle (because that's obviously an open API). Otherwise I'm gonna have to call shenanigans.

Interesting how people complain that everything is designed for Windows only, yet whenever they're offered something non-Windows...they want nothing to do with it.

hence what I said

The problem is this is closed source!

It also seems to connect to google.com when I have Anonymous Info sent to Google, Advanced Features and Gmail turned off. What for? If I had the source I'd know...

If it was open source you wouldn't hear complaints -- except maybe how ugly/bloated it looks.

Because when a company does port it's software to Linux, it does it in a very crappy way.

In all honesty I just can't bring myself to care whether something is open source or not. If I'm going to add something to my list of must-have software, I don't care to see its source. And I'm saying that as someone who writes software for a living.

All eight desktop Linux user rejoice!?

One extra complain here. It uses GTK+2 instead of Qt . They seem to be trying one of each. They had GoogleEarth with Qt, Picasa with winelib and now GoogleDesktop with GTK?

i dont find it cool that i have to open a browser to get a search result of my own pc, i would like someday to see that kde and gnome offer a search solution like spotlight and vista integrated search

its damn slow when running its first indexing , and it reduces system performance a lot .
but there is hope that the next release will be better :-)
