It would appear the marketing powerhouse has done it again. The apparent lack of standard phone features, the fact that AT&T is the only possible service provider as well as a particularly elaborate and steep pricing scheme, was not enough to stop Apple from selling around 525,000 iPhones from 6:00 PM Friday evening through close of business on Sunday. Well done Apple; quite an achievement!
On the other hand, Apple's iPhone launch didn't go off glitch free: many users complained of activation problems with AT&T’s servers and were forced to activate through iTunes. "We are working on any issues on an individual basis with customers who were impacted," said Michael Coe, a representative for AT&T. An Apple spokesman said: "There are a small percentage of iPhone customers who have had a less than perfect activation experience."

Go Apple!
however, i would hope this is a blog article, as the first paragraph isn't exactly a great example of unbiased reporting. According to him, no one could want the iPhone, and it was Apple's mischievous marketing department that swindled half a million people into buying a subpar phone.
different strokes for different folks. i weep for anyone who doesn't get that.
Maybe to the ignorant. But its much more than just a feature list. Try actually using one.
in the same way an audi is a sub-par truck because it lacks a pickup bed.
any problems in the cellphone portion of the iPhone can be laid squarely at AT&T's feet. The only part that is Apple's fault is choosing AT&T to begin with, but the phone itself is not sub-par for that reason. is the AT&T RAZR any worse than the Verizon RAZR? No, it's the same exact phone. One just uses a better network.
As for all the smart phone features, apps, etc, it's not that the iPhone's execution is poor, it's just that it doesn't include certain features that some people wanted to see. And that's subjective.
As I said, different strokes...

Um, how is the lack of 3G support NOT Apple's fault? AT&T didn't design it without that feature, Apple did.
Jobs plainly said that current 3G chips aren't 1) small enough yet and 2) battery efficient enough. They are waiting for them to stop sucking batteries dry and get smaller before implementing them.
Also, a huge problem would be AT&T not having a lot of 3G coverage. Why put battery draining chips in if more often than not people won't be able to make use of it?

My challenge to all that say it is so innovative is
Name one feature that does not exist on any other phone?
So?
We are in a wastefull society. To many people dont think about what they are really doing, but do it anyway. I think these sales help prove that.
There is no jealousy being thrown out, because i dont like anything apple anyway. I like to play my music on whatever i want, and dont want to have to register anything to make it work.
2. EV-DO? pfft. They should have used HSDPA (aka 3.5G), which allows up to 3.6Mbps (my RAZR V3xx has this).
I can tell you are wishing this would have been a phone from Verizon. However if it was a Verizon phone, they would cripple the WiFi, the Bluetooth, and anything else they could to increase profits. Apple opted for GPRS/EDGE so that they could market the product in multiple countries.
You should also note that Verizon only released a GSM / CDMA phone so that they could market it as a world phone and gain some market share for this. Cingular has no reason to offer CDMA since they do not have the infastructure for it. Apple would not use both, unless you wanted to pay for two carriers? GSM works fine in most places and from my experience HSDPA is more widespread than EV-DO. We should all note that in the iPhone demo when they access webpages they are using WiFi. EDGE is MUCH slower (around 56k in most places). I am still waiting for a non-Windows Smartphone to offer HSDPA before I give up mr RAZR
[/list]
this is an example of apple being apple, now i am sure you all rememebr when the ipods came out and all the battery issues and not being abel to replace batteries etc etc, and yet, they did it again, did they not learn anything, or did they learn somethign. BIG SCAM.
it's called quad band, most other phone providers supply phones that will work on any network
it had to happen, lol
even it lacks anything that make a phone... poor people when they discover they can sent thing by bluetooth camera its just one button application with no setting at all, bluetooth its useless and only works for headset, and you are stuck with crappy ringtones and can't use their songs for ringtones.
not to mention the lack of 3g... 3g chipset does not produce bad battery life jobs, look at the e61/k800 battery life
big disappointed, i am happy with my n95/e90
Honestly some people are idiots. There are phones with these same features (and more) for a better price. And they are unlocked and work worldwide. What the hell are people thinking?
My brother-in-law, who loved his Palm Treo, bought one and likes the iPhone more because it's apparently a lot easier to use and iPhone's Safari is much better than any other phone based web browser bar-none, plus the obvious added bonus that it actually looks nice.

mac users are thinking the same thing they always think when an new apple product comes out... they just say bahhhh and follow the heard.
Too bad the steak sucks so bad, huh? Nice sauce, great packaging, wonderful presentation..... sub-par steak.
Hey Apple: Where's The Beef?
I don't get why you folks feel like knocking people down just because they bought what they wanted for their own personal reasons which a rational person would think are nobody else's business.
I wonder who's the tool here. Recently technology related news and events got really ****ing annoying because of all this fan / anti-fan behavior.

No of course, not, just that people seem to act like this is a godly device.. and wayyy over hyped. if you didnt notice, people camping out side for a day or two, ridiculous much? i can understand a gaming station, but a phone... a phone for petes sake. i agree, its a hot and sexy device, no doubt about that, but people just seem to go crazy for a phone, that really isnt revolutionary. its a phone, for teh last time.
It's really about "The Apple Experience." It's extremely compelling, and tends to generate a lot of excitement, not just on the day of purchase.
Apple is one of the few tech companies (if not the only one) that seems to engender enthusiasm for its products. Most importantly: Apple customers, tend to stay Apple customers. It's not a secret, and it isn't hard to understand why. Simply put, quality, and immense attention to those details that enhance the user experience, so that an electronic device isn't just functionally useful, but which is also extremely pleasing and elegant to use, in terms of the outward design and the actual UI.

umm a porshe is a car, 4 wheels and a motor and all that. you really are a mac user arent you
I used to use macs, now i don't, so they lost me, the reasons are varied, but in the end it comes down to i can't do what i want with their stuff.
You may find it easy to understand why so many people clamour for less than great technology just because it looks pretty. but i do not see the point, i woudl rather somethign completely ugly that did exactly what i want when i want to do it, over some pretty piece of junk that does hardly anything most other things do. i.e. ring tones, 3 g etc etc some of the thigs they left out are basic things that EVERY other phone on the market has had for years. for me it aint so pleasign and elegant when someothign does not work like i want it to
Who was talking about Telstra? I was talking about a fully commercial entity already working in the wild, not an incumbant tryhard monopoly.

i was saying all the 3 g networks in aus suck so don't restricvt it to being vodaphone. i hate telstra along with every other aussie but i find your comments very ammusing. especally seeing they do actually have the best 3g access
Jealousy, jealousy!!
That's all it is, folks. Someone else is offering a product that is 100x more compelling than what the competition offers, *with fewer standard features.* Very, very impressive. Yet, for what it CAN do at this point, I'll bet most current owners are happy with the product.
Looks like we have another iPod phenomenon. Congrats to Apple for a fine showing, and for yet again changing the game. Time to up the bar and gradually get rid of all the push-button crap currently on the market. The rewards go to the risk-takers. Time to invest in AAPL, if you can afford current share prices. Expect much higher, record closings for the remainder of this year and well into the next.
But I guess all the stupid, sheep-like masses bought an iPhone, just like they bought an iPod, and continue to do so in record numbers. And the Zune isn't really selling because it's just too good and we wouldn't buy it for fear that it would replace so many of our current multimedia devices.
Name one feature of the iPhone that does not exist on any other phone? p.s. looking pretty does not count
"Having serviced Macs at one point in my illustrious IT career, I understand that there is simply an Apple Way of doing things, and it is often a very, very good way but it's still their way as opposed to some natural ratio of the universe. It's not universal, and there are strange blind spots, but there is a reason that their chosen people hoist the banner. My old phone, one based on Windows Mobile 5.0, had almost every feature the iPhone has - point by point. The differences between the products (like the differences between their desktop cousins) have to do with how functionality is exposed to the user. In this matter, you'll find that Apple's product is almost infuriatingly superior.
Yes, we know the iPhone has less features....just like the ipod has less features then other MP3 players that are better and cheaper, but SIMPLICITY is key as is attention to design. No phone looks as cool as the iPhone. Say what you want , but "cool" is what sells when it comes to portable electronics.
So far almost every article that asked "does the iphone live up to it's hype" the answer has been yes. I know quite a few people who bought one or are buying one after they say all the various videos showing just how hard it is to scratch the screen and from looking at mine..they see mine, they are amazed by how "cool" it is, and half the "lacking" features are things the general public doesn't care about anyway.
Think, when you see celebrities walking around with sidekicks and the rappers who immediately show off the latest blackberries do you honestly believe they have them synced up to a BES server and are mapping their exchange boxes? Do you think they know or even care about those features? No, they buy them because they look "cool". Your shortly going to see every celebrity in hollywood with an iPhone which is only going to raise sales further through their copycat fans

Beautifully stated - how functionality is exposed to the user. This is key to the Apple vs. Others argument. The way Apple *implements* technologies and *exposes them to the user*, is in most instances, infuriatingly superior indeed. It's all about design. It;s all about getting things done on a device with an interface that looks good and actually invites the user to keep using it.
For people wondering about the phrase, "The Apple Experience", this is at least in part, the crux of the issue.
Simplicity = lack.
And the cool design of the iphone is far to be a new concept. Iphone cannot impress any pocketpc users.
LMAO so if i bring out a phone that just makes calls and doesn't text or do anythign else at all but it looks really really pretty, i can sell it for more than every other pophone becasue it is the easiest to use adn its pretty.
Your whole argument is flawed from the start, you idiot
Cheers
Overall it's extremely overrated.
Or, stop your bitching and start saving cash to get one.
