Apple's iPhone launch has been marred by delays in AT&T's phone activation system, leaving some people unable to use their new toy throughout the weekend. People who buy the iPhone, which went on sale in the U.S. Friday evening, are required to activate it through Apple's iTunes software on their home computer. They choose a rate plan, authorize their credit card number, and the phone should be activated soon after.
Apple has said the process should take only a few minutes for people being assigned a new phone number, and "up to six hours" for people transferring a number from another operator. But for some the wait has been much longer, according to postings on Apple's iPhone message board and elsewhere. "It has now been 48 hours and my iPhone is still the prettiest paperweight I own," wrote one frustrated user.

People who dislike Apple, rejoice, Neowin is far from becoming Neomac.

And while that may be true, said person has the right to post their opinion, no matter it being for or against the subject. Said person didn't attack anyone here directly. You did. I think someone else needs to grow up.

Amen, ir0nw0lf - grow up indeed, Hurmoth!
It's OK to dislike stuff, people. Just because others are critical of certain products shouldn't have to make you nervous about your purchase. If you bought a certain product, then hopefully it's because you've done your research, and not just bought into the hype like most tend to do.
Most people that lash out on forums about product criticism unfortunately are folks that just buy into the hype. Then they become complete spazz's when anyone even mentions said product in a negative light.

It's one thing to have an opinion, but it's entirely different to flame, troll, whatever you want to call it by simply saying "People actually lined up for this POS?". There's no reasoning provided, just another useless post from the Apple hating dickwads at Neowin.
Not that much different from blindly praising and defending a product because of brand loyalty.
How many did you buy? Do you need to defend them so you don't feel ripped off? Please share your experience and praise of the product with us.
1. No removable battery: You mean we can't take along a spare battery? WTF?
2. No 3G: EDGE is so last year
3. No expansion slot. Go for the 8-gig model and that's it.
4. 5-hour talk time: not enough battery life
5. 2-megapixel camera when other phones have 5-megapixel shooters on board
And now AT&T screwed the pooch.
Wonderful! Where do I sign up?
I'm not even going to mention the lack of voice dialing, voice recording, instant messaging, memory card slot, MMS, A2DP (stereo bluetooth), common Bluetooth file transfer, GPS capability, text copy and paste, video recording with the built-in camera, native games, and support for MP3 files as ringtones because that would embarrasses all you iPhone owners too much. Have a nice day with your pretty paperweight.
2. Wifi is good enough for me
3. Do the ipods have expansion slots? I don't need to be carrying around 10 different cards.
4. 5-hour talk time is more than the avg 4hr talk time on most phones.
5. Show me a phone that has 5 Megapixels? My old phone had 1.3MP. If I want to take real photos I'll use my 8.1MP Sony Cybershot.
And out of all those features u mention the only thing I'm missing is IM, but my old phone didnt even have WLM anyways so I have to use the web browser anyways. I don't need games for my phone... I have a PSP, and I can live without MP3 ringtones. Smartphones are useless to me, I don't use my phone for business. Yea I'll enjoy my nice paperweight more than you
As I mentioned before, I had no trouble activating my 2 iphones. My only con that I have with the phone is I'm forced to use iTunes, which is one of the worst software I've ever used. I'll just wait for those other 3rd party programs to support an iphone.

the iphone is quite frankly rubbish. Not only is it so expensive but us people in the uk will again be ripped off with prices. Also not forgetting the fact you cant remove the battery. Then i have to use itunes to use the phone wtf.
i like to carry spare batterys around with me as if your on the move and one dies you replace it and simply leave the other charging etc.
Here are my problems with it:
1. ATT slow speed network and service contract
2. Cost, this thing is expensive for being so average
3. Lacks any true expansion slots
4. No battery plan for replacement (it can be serviced but you will be without a phone, WTF?)
5. Limited bluetooth
6. The display is nice but the phone is ugly
7. a crippled version of OSX that is about as related to OSX as Windows is Windows Mobile, ok maybe Windows embedded.
8. Storage (8 gigs for movies?)
9. lack of responsiveness in UI and lag when typing and making interactions with interface
What is nice about it:
1. a pretty nice display
2. the virtual keyboard is interesting
3. the ipod part of it is sweet
4. video play is a least viewable
5. it is made by Apple
The rest of your points are pretty valid, though.
It is a nice phone, though not jaw dropping like some people in the media (and even some of my friends) claim. I sure Apple with time will update the phone to fix many of the problems, and we can only hope that ATT gets with the program.

1. you will need to change the battery after some time.
2. for you maybe but for mobility 3g 3.6mbps is needed
3. you know microSD cards are up to 8gb now and will be increased to 32gb very soon? to expand the memory its easier just to buy a card than buying a new phone.
4. both phones up have 6 - 8 hours of talktime and have 3g, n95 adding 3g edge have wifi
5. click up
Me thinks you need to back that statement up. I don't see the iphone doing anything more than Windows Mobile.
I do see IT businesses not running out and adopting this, unlike Windows Mobile.
well, um...... it looks pretty!

The reason they're using EDGE to maximise battery life (as it uses less), using something 3G like UMTS, would cripple the battery.
Other phones probably dont last quite as long as the iPhone but you can transfer data at up to 3.6 Mbit/s on modern UMTS networks (and in theory can go up to 14Mbit/s with the right ones), compared to EDGE which uses only about 0.25Mbit/s transfer max.
So 6 hours of internet use on the iPhone, using something else on a 3.6Mbit/s network you only need to be online for 25mins
rebranding: iWastemytime
jobs i just throwing at excuse.
Give it 3G and all the other standard features found on all mid range or above modern phones, and it would be fine, just apples lack of very simple things is strange.
I wonder why he hasn't chimed in yet....strange indeed.
It isn't about the phone shortcomings It's about what it offers that other phones don't.
Like it or not, it is a radical change from today's phones.
I'll be the last one to praise Apple but you gotta give them props for at least thinking outside the box on most of their designs.
This aint no Vista, that's for sure. Years of R&D has actually *not* been wasted.
My answer to this temporary, narrow-timeframe, shortlived activation issue:
SO WHAT??
Look at the product and don't deny your admiration for it. It's pushing the limits and offering something exciting. Something the competition doesn't really care to do.
