Apple’s iPhone may not have a user-replaceable battery, but now Apple is offering to replace said battery for $79 plus $6.95 shipping. Apple states that the repair will take three business days, not counting shipping to and from the repair center. If you absolutely can't live without your iPhone for the time your device is being serviced, you can rent one from Apple for $29. All data on your iPhone will be erased when you send it off, so Apple suggests that you backup all of your important information with iTunes beforehand. Should Apple consider making the iPhone’s successor have a user-replaceable battery? Well that's an easy yes from any consumer. The real question is will they be satisfied with the money made this time around and give their customers what they want next time?
News source: DailyTech

With that said anyone thinking that the next gen iPhone will have a user replaceable battery is quite simply, stupid, because if it was going to happen it would have happened back when the iPods had that lawsuit about the battery lifespan and then apple consequentially changed the 'fine print' to mention that batteries have a limited ammount of charging cycles. Also 90 bucks (after taxes) is a lot for a replacement battery hell you can get a laptop batter for about that price in some cases and the laptop batteries have more cells and power a much more hungy device (point being you dont get as much for your money if you need to replace the iPhone battery with this service).
Finally the price may seem like a lot but anyone buying the phone + a plan should have little difficulty affording the battery replacement service.

+ at least $60 monthly plan
I wish I had that much dough to spare
Yet look at the POS they just bought. All eye candy and nothing more.

To be honest, the same could be said of Leopard.

What are you talking about? You do realise this is a phone and not an Apple Mac. I doubt all buyers have Apples as well and plus there are many things an iPhone does properly that other phones use as a gimmick. It's comments like this that draw me away from Neowin.

Nevermind the many standard fearures NOT on the phone.....
Its a POS not worth the money it was marked up to. WOW i can use 2 fingers to zoom images!!! brag about it when that is a feature thats worth having. Dualtouch is pointless at the time.

Again just because you don't like the phone it's wrong to say 'POS' because you sound like a 13 year old who whines as you can't get one yourself. Whatever you may say, it's new and it's more usable than any other phone out there, and features that it lacks may be made through software updates. If you think its too expensive, wait until it drops in price. Like any new toy/gadget/mobile, it comes down in price over time. If I could afford it I'd buy one, not just for the looks but the messaging features, iPod integration and Safari.

thats good because your comments are just stupid i keep aksing all you apple fan boys one simple question yet i have not had an answer
Name ONE feature of the iPhone that is not available in an other phone????
I do realise it's a phone hence i would expect your average phone features, at least tri band, and being able to change my battery and ringtones.

I am not 13 actually over double that, i actually have an idea of technology and understand it, yet i agree the iphone is a POS, i can afford one quite easily, i could probably even afford about 30 of them but there is no way in hell i would be stupid enough to buy one.
hello i have to send it back to apple to get the battery replaced, and i LOOSE all my data durign the process, that is beyond ridiculous, and apple should have learnt their lesson with the iPod battery fiasco.
Please tell me you don't use / like Vista.. because I think the irony in that statement would be too much to bear.
1. Too expensive.
2. Already announcing a "battery replacement" program?
3. Read this:
How the hell are you suppose to remove the data off your iPhone when the damn battery needs to be replaced?
But hey honestly any iPhone buyer deserves this for buying the phone.

I'd imagine that most users will actually make use the sync features as it is a smartphone and the software is included. If it's just the battery thats dead, just plug it into the socket and sync it, can't be too hard?

haven't worked with older corporate executives much have you?..... syncing for older execs seems to be the big huh?! to them...... its "too much work".... yes we comp people know its not but to them doing anything more then just using it is "too much work"......

So I guess their support staff lack the knowlege to plug it into power and sync it via iTunes for them... Or haven't shown them how to setup the feature and explain the benifits clearly.
Apple has a solution! For a low, low, low price of 199.95, we can "sync" the data off your iPhone. for you!
LMAO totally agree, i have seen entire mailbox's deleted by execs
uh huh... sounds like someone who doesn't know how businesses and execs work... trust me... tech people have no time for this and the execs could care less about how to sync... they just wont do it and if you teach them it wont stick...get in the real world for a while and you will see how it works...you could spend thousands of dollars and hours training, but most of the time it does no good

agreeed, these are the people that get laptops and permanatly leave them on their desks.
Amen, in an office of 300 people, 75% have laptops and only 2% actually make use of the laptops portability.
The excuse from execs as to why they don't use it?!?....wait for it...."it's too heavy to carry."
What business will allow the installation of iTunes to sync a phone? Most corporate computers are reduced access and disallow installation of unapproved software.
First iPods and now iPhones - what a cult so many mindless follow. This is why I don't own either. Waste of money. Sometimes it's nice to be away from noise for a change.
If you have an iPhone and back-up ALL of your content to iTunes, what would prevent Apple from checking on your content to see if you have anything on it that has circumvented or bypassed Apple's DRM bits? How ****ed-off will you be when you recover your content from iTunes and find that some of the content you had (that you intentionally placed on your iPhone and got around the DRM bits) is now missing?
And some people hate Microsoft...I'm utterly amazed at the "bovine fecal excrement" that comes from Apple.
Would Apple do this? Who knows? People all got in a huff about Microsofts WGA and product activation scheme; if anything coming close to what I invisioned will iPhone owners be as fair to Apple as they were to Microsoft?
(/humor -on)Also, did you know that each and every iPhone made is touched by "The Steve" so that a portion of his "Reality Distorion Field" is eternally part of every iPhone?
(/humor -off)

apple is always gunna do this, making users unable to replace the battery and jack up the price for a replacement, plus to use any of their hardware, you gotta use their software.
if ms tried to pull any this off everyone would be screaming foul play.
but of course its apple so thats ok.
it gets harder to believe people actually like apple cause its better technology and not because they like the name brand and want to 'be different'
go play in traffic
I bet Steve Jobs is laughing all the way to the bank! He's probably thinking "what suckers,
I fooled them with the original iPod, now I've got em again with the iPhone"

and what revision is the iPod on now? and you still can't do anything about its battery....
Nope.
God this phone blows.
Just my 2¢
what you are saying is this phones really really pretty so i don't care how much all the extra crap costs,
oh yeah P.S. i think everyone that buys a ferrari knows it's gonna cost them shitloads to keep it adn repair it so your comparison is just stupid i.e. one thing that costs $200000 or more and one that costs $600 or so.
Apples known for its design more than anything, and having your removable battery would void all of that. Non removable is a good thing for Apple, in terms of money, design, and engineering. It sucks a bit for the customer when the battery does eventually die, but I'd much rather have a smooth flush and thin phone than a bulky phone with different latches to unlock the battery.

spoken like a true apple fanboy, 'its about looking cool, not being cheap' lol
and maybe to you its easy to sync files but im sure not everyone is computer literate. plus you shouldn't have to backup your files, hell you shouldn't have to send it in for a battery replacement!

lol. Wow, getting defensive.
Look, I just changed my N95's battery right here. Took 10 seconds. I didn't sync, or lose data. Oh, and I did it myself, without being without a phone for at least a week.

Next as for backing up your data? What exactly are you backing up, all your information for your iPhone numbers aside all originated from the computer, if anything your backing it up onto your iPhone. Music, Contacts, Email, Bookmarks. These are all things that don't need backing up, they are something thats coming from your computer, try and grasp that concept.
Next as for what if they don't have a computer? Why the hell would they buy an iPhone if they didn't have a computer, besides you literally need a computer to get it activated, so I don't think not having a computer is going to be an issue in this era.
As for the phone not being bulky, the iPhone is a little more advanced than your average cellphone yet its still thinner than nearly everything else. The N95 is thicker than the iPhone, so theres your answer. As for where do I base my opinion on batteries? have your looked at cellphones, theres your answer, or talk to someone who knows what they are talking about and they will explain it.
The one I will agree with is Apple could have done it right in the beginning and made it removable with still reducing size if they planned it in the beginning, but not only would that make the phone bigger than it currently is, even if its not a lot, and it will require Apple to break their "laws" of design, which I doubt they will do.
Bottom line is some people like to pay more for things that look good, look at most Apples product line, similar hardware to PC makers yet it costs more? Why? Design, and Engineering, Macs are hell of a lot more compact and better built than most manufacturers so they cost more, why did you expect different with the iPhone?

Look at the Blackberry 8800, Curve or pearl to see how to design a product to have a removable, user replacable battery without sacrificing looks or style.
For most people, having to go 5-7 days without a phone is just a deal breaker and absolutly not possible.
You could buy a PS3 at that price Apple is selling that thing, and the PS3 has more software available to it (that's saying a lot).

Yea. That Razr is one bulky piece of crap!
and if anyone is going to edit my post for me, can you at least leave a reason for doign so adn not remove the whole point of what i was writing
which part of the brain are you cliaiming you have, i am guessing the left, isn't that the "artistic side" well i am guessing being an apple lover.
OK on the battery thing, if these things never needed replacing you would not have so many after market batteries you can buy, how is apples battery goign to be so much better than the rest. LMAO it's all ok you can pay even more and apple wil lend you a phone, how many peoples hands have been all over that thing??
You really have no idea, you can activate it via at&T so you do not NEED a computer, many people with ipods i am sure do not havea computer, in fact i know a few. to say noone that buys one wil not have a computer is just ridiculous, as for the backups it's the numbers i am worried about loosing so i don't get what you are goign on about. all the other crap is easy to get back. it's the numbers that arent
I don't get how it is so much more advanced, what the hell do you and all these others mean by that, you can't just say its so far advanced and not have anythign to back up your claims.
The size well my phone is like a centimetre thick , looking at it now and i can remove the battery quite easily, how will making a battery remoavable make it so much bigger and uglier, i really just don't get where you are coming from, and saying, talk to someone that knows, i will because you my friend obviously don't.
bottom line is mac lovers are nmot the smartest users in the world, hence they have to make it so much easier to use.
just a add: This thing will be cracked open and a replacement video will be on youtube in less than a month.
my 2 c.
It's $85 + $29 you have to pay for a 'loaner' phone...
or
It's $85 + at least a WHOLE week of being without your phone.
Plus, what happens if the phone gets lost in the mail?
Then think about it... they said Apple sold like half a million iPhones the first weekend or something, right? If they all get ~ 400 charges, that means, in about a year, there will be .5+ million people sending in phones for battery replacements. Think apple will fix them all in a couple days? Doubt it.
If they offered a battery where you can bring it in for an instant change in an Apple store, than it'd kind of be acceptable. To send my phone away for a new battery? F THAT.
right on the money
So you shipping them the SIM card, too?
How about mixed-up SIM cards
But if u have said... Take the IPhone back and get urself a Nintendo or a xbox360. then i would have to agree...
But if u have said... Take the IPhone back and get urself a Nintendo or a xbox360. then i would have to agree...
Well, there you go! Sony should sell the PS3 to Apple. Apple will change the case, slap a logo on it and then sell it for twice as much and people will kill to get one!

LMAO
Rumor has it that when the Icar runs out of gas, you have to pay for a transport to Cupertino for them to refuel it for you.
Sealed engine. So if anything breaks down, you have to pay for a new iCar.

slightly incorrect you only have to send it back and get the engine replaced, but they do it in a week and of course all your money gets taken out the ash tray
Yeah, it still plays MP3, but an iPod is supposed to be much more. It's not expensive for nothing, just to play MP3s. Or maybe you think it is.
Think before laughing at others.
It's not the companies decision to decide when the product will be "outdated" or not. Its the customer's decision. Apple taking that right off the customers is uncalled for.
I still use my Nokia 6100 and I purchased it 4 years ago, outdated? I think not.

If you're concerned about features you still shouldn't be getting an iPod considering most of the other players do more now. And you can't tell me they're all ugly.

all you apple buts say apple hjas more more more, but everyone else sees it as having less less less, my question to you is, what the hell is this more you are talkign about?? please please don't tell me it look s pretty and is easy to use, i am so sick of hearing that crap from apple users

If you're talking about the iPod or the iPhone (otherwise you're totally off-topic...), yes they are all easy to use, they look pretty and all.
Yes, other MP3 players are also pretty and easy to use. I just prefer Apple's style, what do you want.
Oh and did I really say Apple has more to offer? Generally, I'd agree that Apple has it, while many others don't. They are better than the average, but they don't have everything.

In regards to what I am talking about, you said and i quote
"Yeah, it still plays MP3, but an iPod is supposed to be much more"
I would like to know what this "more" you mention is all about, why is it ok for Apple™ to charge so much more money for the same thing or sometimes even less functionality than other manufacturers. I do not consider "it looks pretty and it's easy to use" as viable arguments to say it is worth more money

I've not used an iPhone and don't intend to buy one given the pretty huge cost at this point (can only hope it goes down in price when it finally makes it to Europe) - but whilst I don't buy into Steve Jobs's "5 years ahead of the competition" nonsense, I feel it pretty well out classes a lot of the competition in other ways.
This week at work we looked into and purchased a few HP iPaq's with, mobile phone built in too.. needed something at work to jot some stuff down and it made sense to spend a little more and eliminate the need to carry a phone also. Sprung out a discounted £287'ish on some iPaq rw6815's and I can only say what an enormous dissappointment the product is. Firstly - crashing. It does it, a lot. Twice during the process of trying to get it sync'd up and charged with my PC. Secondly.. the UI.. jesus, I was using the same interface when I was working with Dell Axim's about 4 to 5 years ago.. haven't Microsoft moved on at ALL? Thirdly - dreadful applications - right down to the fiddly stylus, the WiFi support which seems to engage and disengage itself at will... I could go on but I won't.
But at that price, i'd rather pay for an iPhone (dollars to english pounds mean they'd cost the same.. and the iPhone has considerably more built in storage than the iPaq) on contract that buy one of these for my personal use.. and its pretty clear the iPhone would nail it in terms of ALL features.
Microsoft offers NO competition to the iPhone. Nokia.. well i've not used the N95 much but I suspect they're going to be a lot closer. But my experience with the N70 soured my feelings for Nokia a little.. my new 6300, whilst considerably feature stripped compared to the N70, is a lot better...
What a f****** rip-off !
$200+ technology (minus the $85.95 battery)= $600 overhyped product by apple
"Think Different"
You could buy a mortgage for the price you pay for an iPhone.
What about the manufacturer guarantee, in the UK, all new electronic devices have a complementry 1 year warranty, should anything go wrong with device the customer can send the item back for a free repair (for any number of problems within the first year of purchase). Isn't this the same in USA?
If so, should anything happen to your device (including a failed battery) shouldn't you get it replaced for free (within the first year of purchase)?
The U.S. consumer laws only benefit the corporations.
the price is kind of comparable...
then again it doesnt mean thats cheap
Glassed Silver:mac
AFAIK, all cameras now has replacable battery and they are quite cheap. By "quite cheap" I refer they are under USD$50.
Secondly, whats "professional inserting"? Guess I'm professional because I always switching batteries for my Fuji F810 compact camera?
please enlighten me.

MS Employee: "Hey, we've just finished a brand new phone! It can do absolutely nothing except use a land phone line, it comes complete with a docking station you will not be able to loose thanks to the handy cord we've attatched it to, plus the docking station will be needed to dail, yes ladies and gentlemen, dail a number"
Reporter: "So you've taken your great, great-grandmother's phone, and recreated it and selling it as state of the art?"
MS Employee: "Basically, yes... but is has the MS logo on it, see? Ooooh what a pretty logo"
Reporter: "You're fricking crazy!!"
