Jon Johansen (DVD Jon) has posted a method that allows users to take a new iPhone and activate it without connecting to AT&T servers or supplying any personal information.

The method allows users take an iPhone and activate it to allow iPod and Wifi functionality, but without signing up for mobile telephone service with AT&T.

This has also be accomplished by canceling AT&T service in the first few days after activation.

This Account Has Exceeded Its CPU Quota

Please contact this site's webmaster.

Wait a few minutes and use your browser's "Back" button or click here to try again.

If you are the webmaster, your account may have exceeded for one or more of the following reasons:

* Your site has used more than 20% of the cpu.
* Your account has too many processes running at the same time.
* Your site was consuming too many resources. This happens on occassion to very busy sites that have inefficient scripts running.

Would be nice to know how he did it.

I assume this will allow the use of other non AT&T sim cards which support GSM?

Nope. It just lets you use the WiFi and iPod functions.

I had the access to the site for some time.

It said that you can't use the iPhone as a phone but Wifi and iPod still works.

He also mentioned about taking the sim card from an activated iPhone and use the same sim card to activate his phone (or something like that.) But he wasn't sure if the other guy's phone worked later on or not.

I guess this was it.. I don't remember much - it's almost 2 am and so if I've screwed up there.. don't flame at me.

Hmmm, I will never sign up for AT&T cellular...ever, but the iPhone does seem to be a very tasty iPod and media player. With Wifi providing Internet/maps access, etc. that might make the iPhone worth buying for me.

iPhone without AT&T

I’ve found a way to activate a brand new unactivated iPhone without giving any of your money or personal information to AT&T NSA. The iPhone does not have phone capability, but the iPod and WiFi work. Stay tuned!

Update:

Magic iTunes numbers:

Offset 2048912: 33C0C3

Offset 257074: 28

Offset 257013: 33C9B1

Add “127.0.0.1 albert.apple.com” to c:windowssystem32driversetchosts

Download Phone Activation Server v1.0 to activate your iPhone for iPod+WiFi use. Note that this application will not do anything unless you understand the magic numbers as well as add the hosts entry. Phone Activation Server (PAS) requires that you have the MS .NET Framework 2.0 installed.

Download PAS v1.0 Source Code - get it from the site

iphone = beach of all techies
#6.1 Croquant on 04 Jul 2007 - 18:19
Not all of them. Some of us prefer to buy smartphones that are 3G or EVDO. And have a tactile-feedback keyboard, not a virtual keyboard.
#6.2 whocares78 on 05 Jul 2007 - 01:26
umm not sure what you mean by beach, i think you may have ment BITCH, but hey, i really hope you are not implying all techies will like this

Funny, someone posted something about this and the thread was locked -- now it's on the front page.
There probably shouldn't be a link telling how to circumnavigate iPhone software?

It's called hypocrisy.
#7.2 ANova on 05 Jul 2007 - 06:19
Oh so someone pays $500-600 for something yet their still not allowed to use it in any fashion until they pay a monthly fee for phone usage? Please.

Then they shouldn't have paid that much for something they can't use how they see fit. People knew what they were getting before this came out. If they don't like how the product limits them then too bad for them.

Asking for info or telling how to crack or bypass protections is not allowed yet it's right here. The people that run this place are a bunch of hypocrites.

it's just the begining mate.... I'm sure once people master this hack, they will move to the next step; which is to allow any GSM sim card to work on the iPhone

They don't do what they do because they want it, they do it because it's a challenge to them, it interests them and gives them notariety among other hackers.

it may be a challenge, but i do not know of any hackers that will go buy this just to crack it, and most hackers i know will not buy it for any toehr reason because they have some idea of technology

the scary thing is people have to hack this thing just to get basic features

He is a good man - I'd love to know how he finds this stuff so quick !

Really pointless, iphone can be a quite good for a cellphone but without phone functionality it's just a average (and expensive) pda.

#10.1 Danrarbc on 04 Jul 2007 - 19:40
It doesn't have even half the features of an average PDA.
#11 chaos_disorder on 04 Jul 2007 - 23:27
Yeah, not using the phone features makes the iPhone nothing more than a ridiculously overpriced iPod nano with very little storage space and internet capabilities. Sorry, there are other devices that are far more reasonably priced that do that and a lot more.
#12 whocares78 on 05 Jul 2007 - 01:28
LMAO, so you only really have an iPod now that has wifi, hahah LMAO, go get an iPod it will be cheaper
#13 RaisinCain on 05 Jul 2007 - 13:28
Yeah... i'm gonna pay $600+ for a phone and then use it like a plain iPod.
