AMD has just posted their latest CPU pricing list, and has slashed prices across the board for Desktop chips. All Athlon X2's are now priced under $200 US. The Athlon X2 6000+ now costs $178 per unit, down from $241 when purchased in quantities of 1000. Pricing on mobile processors remains unchanged.
These price cuts come just days before Intel is expected to cut prices on their CPU line, and highlight new processors featuring a 1333MHz FSB. Preliminary pricing charts based on a July 22nd drop-date have Intel offering their Q6600 quad-core chip for $266 US, and all Core 2 Duo desktop chips with the exception of the 3.0GHz E6850 priced below $200 US.

I remember paying $400 for my old X2 3800+ back in the day... Same thing with RAM. Time for an upgrade
and £200 for 20gig hard drive. It's crazy now what you can buy.

and even crazier that it's still not enough!
Toche
Never buy 1.0 of anything! It's always good to wait until new designs have matured and proven themselves.

True. But man, such awsome CPU's for so little money its a must! I gotta build an AMD system sooon!!
Intel's Core 2 Duo still beats anything AMD has out and (for the foreseeable future) anything that AMD will bring out.
AMD used to be the leader in that arena, then they became the most expensive AND the slowest...eek!
Has AMD become competitive now, guys?
I'm not seeing this yet but I hope we have a real horse race by the end of this year.

AMD was never leader. Intel has to give them market share simply because if they didnt some agency would call "monopoly" on them but now Intel is where it belongs: the top.
Yes well, it's truely hard to argue with someone with such a fantastic point. Though, I always heard living blind wasn't as ebullient and fruitful as looking both ways, but whatever tickles your Intel-branded fancy.
What a ridiculous comment to make - so Intel deliberately made dreadful, super power hungry server processors whilst AMD snuck in with a far stronger 64bit, lower power consuming, much better performing offering?
AMD caught Intel off guard - they'd been at the top for so long they lost their way and it took AMD to make them realise that and get themselves back on track!
The AMD server offerings are still very good.. looking forward to seeing some Barcelona chips very soon!
Not to mention, the Intel CPUs wouldn't have the 64bit capabilities (EMT64 is licensed from AMD). If Intel had gotten their way they would have dropped x86 support all together.
have you been paying attention the past few years?
prices were insane until the late 90s, but now things have leveled out.
lower CPU prices will have zero impact on computer prices.
just because part "A" dropped in price, means they may use more expensive part "B", "C", and "D", possibly resulting in HIGHER computer prices.

Thanks for the response, but all you had to do was say the last two statements.

Yes they do. Remember when Dell shipped their first AMD computers? They were $100 cheaper.
Quantities of 1000. Not for a single chip.
Quantities of 1000. Not for a single chip.
That means for retail business, such as newegg, which is currently selling the 6000+ @ $169.99 even cheaper!

Yup.
EDIT:
For now my AMD Athlon 64 3800+ will do =P It cost me about 350€ 2 years ago
And it's not waiting until 2020 to get your next computer but if you're not in a rush and an announced price cut or a little revision of some of the key components of your new machine is around the corner it's worth waiting

Or wait two weeks and get an E6850 @ 3 GHz stock for under $300. That is a great deal!

good idea whats another 2 weeks
look at the E4400, 2.0 Gjz! JESUS!

how many mhz per gigajertz?

Example the Amd Athlon X2 6000+ is slightly behind but very close to the Intel Core 2 Duo e6700 when it comes to performance. The Amd Athlon X2 6000+ now costs $164 where the Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 costs around $269. This makes the AMD the winner when you do price/performance ratio's.
It's when you go "higher" that Amd can't compete with Intel. What AMD is doing since they lost the speed crown, is make sure that when you look at the value of there cpu's there better in price when compared to there Intel equivalent chip.
If you made a budget of $300+ for a cpu... you will be looking at an Intel, but if you have a $200 budget for a cpu, you have both AMD & Intel as an option and AMD would be very affordable.
But come July 22... Intel will drop the price on the Intel E6850 to $183... Which put them close to price again. AMD had to make these price cuts now.
Ummmmm.. 8 CORES! YUMMY!
