AMD has just posted their latest CPU pricing list, and has slashed prices across the board for Desktop chips. All Athlon X2's are now priced under $200 US. The Athlon X2 6000+ now costs $178 per unit, down from $241 when purchased in quantities of 1000. Pricing on mobile processors remains unchanged.

These price cuts come just days before Intel is expected to cut prices on their CPU line, and highlight new processors featuring a 1333MHz FSB. Preliminary pricing charts based on a July 22nd drop-date have Intel offering their Q6600 quad-core chip for $266 US, and all Core 2 Duo desktop chips with the exception of the 3.0GHz E6850 priced below $200 US.

WOW!
I remember paying $400 for my old X2 3800+ back in the day... Same thing with RAM. Time for an upgrade

I once paid £128 for 128mb of Ram :p
and £200 for 20gig hard drive. It's crazy now what you can buy.

Lol in fact I got it bout same price as it is now as I used google checkout during its intial launch in the UK where you saved £10 on an order...so works out bout the same price seeings the offer isnt on anymore. But yeah min after you've bought something there's always a better deal sadly.

Never buy 1.0 of anything! It's always good to wait until new designs have matured and proven themselves.
#4 sin-ergy on 10 Jul 2007 - 16:38
haha gotta love technology. my 4 year old lcd (paid $600 at the time) is now worth under $200.

time for an upgrade!
#5 maudit on 10 Jul 2007 - 17:16
If only AMD would Slash there quadcore offerings as well... I wonder why they didn't as intel is going to...

I'm waiting for Intels prices to come out, but 6000+ for $178 is itempting.

True. But man, such awsome CPU's for so little money its a must! I gotta build an AMD system sooon!!

The price cuts are still not worth it techonlogy wise.

Intel's Core 2 Duo still beats anything AMD has out and (for the foreseeable future) anything that AMD will bring out.
#7.1 excalpius on 10 Jul 2007 - 20:14
Exactly. I'm still waiting to see a consensus of reviews etc. that say that the price/performance of anything from AMD is in the same realm as Intel right now.

AMD used to be the leader in that arena, then they became the most expensive AND the slowest...eek!

Has AMD become competitive now, guys?

I'm not seeing this yet but I hope we have a real horse race by the end of this year.

AMD was never leader. Intel has to give them market share simply because if they didnt some agency would call "monopoly" on them but now Intel is where it belongs: the top.

Yes well, it's truely hard to argue with someone with such a fantastic point. Though, I always heard living blind wasn't as ebullient and fruitful as looking both ways, but whatever tickles your Intel-branded fancy.
#7.5 excalpius on 11 Jul 2007 - 05:32
Two+ years ago, AMD took the price AND performance crown from Intel. But last year that all changed. And it doesn't look like AMD is going to be able to catch up any time soon. Anyone think otherwise? I'd like to know.

What a ridiculous comment to make - so Intel deliberately made dreadful, super power hungry server processors whilst AMD snuck in with a far stronger 64bit, lower power consuming, much better performing offering?

AMD caught Intel off guard - they'd been at the top for so long they lost their way and it took AMD to make them realise that and get themselves back on track!

The AMD server offerings are still very good.. looking forward to seeing some Barcelona chips very soon!
#7.7 sin-ergy on 11 Jul 2007 - 12:11
feh, you all should be thanking AMD for bringing competition and driving prices down. you'd be paying through the nose for intel chips right now if not for AMD!

Not to mention, the Intel CPUs wouldn't have the 64bit capabilities (EMT64 is licensed from AMD). If Intel had gotten their way they would have dropped x86 support all together.

This is probably a dumb question, but when do you guys think this will affect brand name computer prices? How long is it going to take for this price cut to come back to the consumers (who aren't upgrading themselves or making their own)?

have you been paying attention the past few years?

prices were insane until the late 90s, but now things have leveled out.

lower CPU prices will have zero impact on computer prices.

just because part "A" dropped in price, means they may use more expensive part "B", "C", and "D", possibly resulting in HIGHER computer prices.

Yes they do. Remember when Dell shipped their first AMD computers? They were $100 cheaper.

"The Athlon X2 6000+ now costs $178 per unit, down from $241 when purchased in quantities of 1000."

Quantities of 1000. Not for a single chip.

That means for retail business, such as newegg, which is currently selling the 6000+ @ $169.99 even cheaper!

That's why I'm building a new computer in mid-to-late August =P But I want the new Core 2 Duo with 1333MHz FS ... But now I just have to focus on finishing my exams

EDIT:

For now my AMD Athlon 64 3800+ will do =P It cost me about 350€ 2 years ago

And it's not waiting until 2020 to get your next computer but if you're not in a rush and an announced price cut or a little revision of some of the key components of your new machine is around the corner it's worth waiting

now do i wanna buy a amd x2 6000 or buy a core 2 duo 6700 with a new mobo hmmmm this is something ill have to think hard on since im not really a overclocker
#11.1 wordup48 on 10 Jul 2007 - 20:14
You could probably compare the AMD 6000+ to the C2D E6600. The E6600 still beats the AMD 6000+. I do not think the increase in price to the E6700 is even close to worth it.

Or wait two weeks and get an E6850 @ 3 GHz stock for under $300. That is a great deal!

I upgraded my computer at least once a year for the longest time, until finally something happened. It became fast enough to do anything I wanted and upgrading became a pointless waste of money. Haven't upgraded in three years now and still perfectly satisfied.

AMD is trying to be a better value vs the cpu's that are "close" to there CPU's.

Example the Amd Athlon X2 6000+ is slightly behind but very close to the Intel Core 2 Duo e6700 when it comes to performance. The Amd Athlon X2 6000+ now costs $164 where the Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 costs around $269. This makes the AMD the winner when you do price/performance ratio's.

It's when you go "higher" that Amd can't compete with Intel. What AMD is doing since they lost the speed crown, is make sure that when you look at the value of there cpu's there better in price when compared to there Intel equivalent chip.

If you made a budget of $300+ for a cpu... you will be looking at an Intel, but if you have a $200 budget for a cpu, you have both AMD & Intel as an option and AMD would be very affordable.

But come July 22... Intel will drop the price on the Intel E6850 to $183... Which put them close to price again. AMD had to make these price cuts now.

it's going to be 2 x 4 core k10. you can have 2 x 4 core c2q right now already.
