Logitech's MX Air Mouse with freespace motion control

Logitech unveiled its MX Air Mouse this morning, a laser mouse that works on the desk and in the air. A somewhat similar product from Gyration has been available for a while. However, the underlying technology isn't quite the same. The Air MX uses Freespace motion control technology, which interprets how you move the mouse regardless of where you point it ensuring accurate and responsive navigation at a range of up to 30 feet. That alone sets it apart from Gyration’s device which needs to be pointed directly at the computer.

This should probably be updated with the update from the source stating that the Gyration device doesn't need to pointed at the computer

Yeah...I didn't bother reading the article when I saw that line about the Gyration mouse needing to be pointed at the screen. I had a Gyration mouse like...4 years ago. Worked great, could use it on a flat surface or in the air and it didn't matter where you pointed it, it worked off of motion not direction.

Agree, I have a Gyration mouse and it's RF. What makes it necessary to directly point to the receiver/computer?

It works well even the receiver is at my back and my comp is at front.

I was expecting something innovative from Logitech, they're always making something great. But a cordless rechargable laser mouse that's also a gyromouse? Exxxxxxxxxxxcelent!
Now put 8 buttons on it and a tilt-wheel and I'll be buying one.

8? Why the hell do you need 8 button on a mouse?
#5.2 MrCobra on 15 Jul 2007 - 04:00
...and why pay $150 for a mouse?

Because I have an MX1000 and I don't wanna go to anything less than eight now.

I'll be glad when I can use my wang as a pointing device. My hand's already on it most of the time!

why is it not apple compatible?
#7.1 mattm591 on 15 Jul 2007 - 14:44
Because you should have used Windows or Linux!

That said, I doubt it's Linux compatible either

I did some research into this, and apparently they will be adding Mac support soon. There is some info floating around the net with info from a Logitech spokes-person on it. I think it may even have been the guy who designed it or something like that.

I hope they do, as I'm primarily a Mac user now, however I may just get one for use on my PC anyway as it looks really cool!

Primarily a Mac user and you'd actually waste that amount of money on a mouse that you'd probably only use every once in a while, simply because it "looks really cool"?

The wasting of money in all it's glory

You saw where he said he was a Mac user right? You don't think all those people went out and got iPhones because they are useful or work well right?

600 bucks who cares! It looks cool!

I'm 'Primarily' a mac user. not exclusively. To be honest I use my PC a fair amount too (I better or I wouldnt have spent around £2000 on a new system last month). I have to use the thing for work, and I'm still a gamer. Plus, as much as I hate to admit it, Windows does still have a few advantages over MacOS. Namely the software you can run on it.

As I said though, I read somewhere that Mac drivers would be released. Even if they're not, I'm sure someone will hack something together which can be used.

Forget Wii style mice, I want simple force feedback

This will be great for any upcoming Wii emulators, or ports.

Wow, that's awesome. I think it's really sleek and I'd get one if it wasn't so expensive.
