Vista use grows as Mac OS X stays flat

Contrary to belief Vista is actually doing better than some predicted. I don't think it deserves its nickname by some self proclaimed journalists as Windows ME 2 just yet. In all fairness to Microsoft, remember when XP needed significant security updates to bring it up to standards already common when it was released? Microsoft eventually delivered. - Steve

Windows Vista's share of online users has increased every month this year, while rival Mac OS X -- to which Vista has often been compared -- has shown little, if any, growth, a metrics company reports.

According to Net Applications, in June Windows Vista accounted for 4.52% of all systems that browsed the Web, up from January's 0.18%. Vista has grown its usage share each month since its release to consumers Jan. 30, hitting 0.93% in February, 2.04% in March, 3.02% in April and 3.74% in May. Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X, meanwhile, accounted for 6.22% in January and hit its high point of 6.46% in May, but it slipped back to 6% in June.

If Vista's uptake trend continues, it should pass Mac OS X in Web usage share by the end of August.

OS X will not really see much growth now with Leopard right around the corner.

Wait until that's released - OS X users will increase then

Or...users of OSX will upgrade, and thats it

I don't see any reason why users not already using OSX should convert faster to OSX after Leopard have been released.

some maybe wait for its release so they dont have to fork out another 129?

Well I would be surprised if OSX hadnt grown as well with all the new Macs being sold and Apple taking the number 3 slot in American PC makers.

Something doesnt sound right.

OSX has grown as well: notice they're talking about marketshare percentages, not the actual number of users.
The computer market is dynamic, the total number of computers keeps growing. The article just focuses on percentages to favour Vista's image.

We could spin numbers the oposite way and say that, despite Vista being sold will pretty much every new PC, and PCs selling far more than Macs, it still hasn't managed to reach OSX marketshare

in addition to that we could name the fact that still a lot of people want xp with their new pcs... xD

But OSX should grow with every new mac sold. As long as those Macs are not replacements for old ones.

So they are comparing the market share of a version of Windows versus all versions of OS X. So if Windows market share actually increased this would be a big deal, but if this is actually just conversion from XP to Vista of 4%-ish of the market it's more like normal turn over of old being replaced with new. Likewise I wonder whether OS X 10.4's % has increased any via normal turn over from 10.3?

The bigger deal seems to be the .40% difference that is probably due to Mac users waiting until Leopard to turn over old to new, where as Windows users have no reason to wait.

The biggest deal would be if OS X shrunk and Windows (total) expanded due to the Launch of Vista, but I don't see that. This isn't true as the article says

Windows overall total has remained flat, ranging between 90.01% and 90.46% through the first six months of the year.

Agreed. This is a ridiculous spin article/opinion piece. Vista now comes pre-bundled with every PC sold. It's just the latest flavor of Windows. Only TOTAL Windows users (98+2000+XP+Vista) vs TOTAL Mac users (OS 8, 9, X) vs TOTAL Linux users is indicative of any market share shift/change.

I find it HIGHLY unlikely that there is any NET growth in Windows market share vs. ANY OS due to Vista.

You know what this means don't you?! with Apple at #3 retail spot and Vista growing faster than OSX it means one thing: people buy macs to bootcamp into VISTA!

There is no more sense in the world

Macs are too expensive still....

Indeed. That bright, shiny logo still makes up a huge part of the purchase price.

Yup, cos it indicates a slick case design and software value-add

Windows Me 2?!! I knew I was forgetting something since Vista came out. I was forgetting to add the 2, and here I thought I invented calling Vista just another Windows Me.
#8 david13lt on 24 Jul 2007 - 10:28
OS X will get higher market share, at least up to 2 more per cent after Leopard and new iMacs are released.

Funny how nobody noticed the HUGE flaw with the reasoning in the article. It's not that OSX did not sell as usual. In a dynamic market, you can't use percentages to show selling trends. Say OSX was selling 25 units and XP was selling 100. Then, OSX was selling 50 units and Vista was selling 200. It appears that neither changed, when in fact both doubled. Not to mention the fact that Apple hasn't played their trump card while MS has.

It's also a good idea to check other sources. One source reports Vista to be at three percent, Below both OS X and Linux.

Apple sells $45 million worth of products in a single store, in one quarter, and OSX growth is stagnant? Yeah, right!

Macintoch always was (and is) a elitist products, or you could say, a gaytist-girlytist product. ;-) Nothing related with other products of the same company, the same with Creative, where they sold well soundcard but poor with videocard.

#10.2 simon360 on 24 Jul 2007 - 14:48
Uh, gaytist?

Wow, great to know you like to bash Mac users, girls and homosexual people alike.

I'm a Debian user myself, and I guarantee you, I'm more elitist than any Mac user could ever be. (See what I mean?! )

<insert RMS plug here>
<insert GNU plug here>
<insert OSS plug here>
<insert generic Linux plug here>

lol... how do you jump in this conclusion?.

Because if i say mac users are mainly gays and women, if YOU consider that it's a offensive then YOU are thinking any comparison with gays or women are offensives? or even worst, you may be are thinking that it's offensive to be a mac users.

If i say that (it's just a example) :"french are skinny" (or germans or whathever) then it's a offesive phrase but if i say "french are european" and you think that it's a offensive phrase, then may be you are thinking that to be a european is a bad thing.

If I could install OSX on PC hardware (non-Mac), I would buy it. If Apple ever decides to separate the OS and hardware devisions of the company and release the OS for PCs, I'm sure they would see a significant market share increase.
