It arrived in a blaze of publicity and had frenzied gadget fans queuing for days before its launch last month. But just weeks after Apple's iPhone was unleashed on American shoppers, researchers say they have discovered how to hack into it and steal personal information.

Experts at Independent Security Evaluators, a computer protection consultancy, claim to have found a way to gain complete access to the phone, billed by its creators, Apple, as the mobile phone of the future. Researchers discovered the flaw after examining the way the iPhone connects to the internet. They say it is possible to hack in using the iPhone's wireless internet system, allowing full control of the phone, and accessing private information at will.

Charlie Miller, lead analyst at ISE, said it meant the handset was open to abuse. "Within two weeks of part-time work we had successfully discovered a vulnerability," said a notice on the company's website. "The compromised iPhone sent personal data including SMS text messages, contact information, call history and voicemail information over this connection ... we can get any file we want."

I'm surprised everyone took that comment so light-heartedly. Honestly, I just sort of commented with my gut. I'm one of the biggest fans Apple could ever have. I'm a Mac and iPod user. I'd love to have an iPhone but I can't justify this money. Not to mention, more and more, it looks like I'd be better off with a 2G.

That was just 20% being sick of everything iPhone and 80% being one of those Mac users who naturally understands everything has vulnerabilities that will need to be discovered and patched over time. It just bugs me how every article like this is treated by the press as a big GOTCHA! on Apple.

The press and everyone considers it a big gotcha because for years apple and apple fanboys have touted that thier stuff is ALWAYS secure and unafflicted by problems.

Oh my, so much for Apple going around saying we are more secure then Windows... As the iPhone runs OSX on it (basically an embedded version) if you can crack the iPhone, there more then likely are ways also into OSX. Like people say, the more popular you get, the more you get exposed to the good and the bad.

Safari already had it's own share of bugs on Windows and Mac, so I wouldn't go as far as saying that these iPhone issues change anything when it comes to OSX security (or lack of thereof).

but the apple fan boys will come out with some sort of excuse why this is ok and all phones should have it because it is a great feature, or that this somehow isn't apples fault and somehow MS is to blame

So if the Iphone OS is 5 years ahead of everything else, does that makes its bugs 5x better than windows?

Bwahahahahahahahaaha!

Thanks for the laugh man! That's hilarious! iPhone 5 years ahead of everything else!? ROFL!!!!

Come to Europe some time... Our phones must be 15 years ahead of everything else using that same logic!
