- what should we expect in SP3?

- Introduce new annoying bugs, opps, I mean "features", so people using XP will want to "upgrade" to Vista.

- Yes! Finally.
Maybe they'll add a new WGA or something too, like in SP2.

- What’s the point? what a waste of man power should all go on to vista and sort it out it has so much potential, does XP need an SP3 obviously they are going to be people using it for ages yet but has it got any serious problems that require a service pack?

- I can think of at least one, and one quite anoying: the tooltips bug... they should have fixed that a long time ago...

#3.2 Posted by ozzy76 on 31 Jul 2007 - 11:44
- What's the point? 2004 was the last time a major update was released for XP. MS has been ignoring XP to get Vista out the door. SP3 is long overdue.
If anything, it'd just make installing XP much much easier for everyone. If you have ever reloaded XP, then you would know having to install 100+ *no clue on exact number but WMP11, IE7, + updates) updates is a major pain. -
#3.3 Posted by xpgeek on 31 Jul 2007 - 11:57
- Exactly, I've been wishing for an SP3 just for that reason too for a while now; just to roll all those post SP2 updates into a package I can put on a cd.

A quick workaround that works for me: right-click taskbar and choose "Properties"; uncheck "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows"; click "Apply" and hover your mouse over a tray icon, which should now show the tooltip in front of the taskbar (if not, right click on any icon to give it focus); recheck "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" and then click "OK" to finish. This seems to keep the tooltips on top for quite a while before screwing up again.
Note that I always use the taskbar "auto-hide" fuction, so I don't know how that affects this issue. -

There's choices.. now
1. http://www.autopatcher.com/ - all the updates in one big package
2. nLite - slipstream the updates into an XP install yourself. -

Many people have had SVCHOST @ 100% CPU utilisation on Xp. It's a big problem.
When you find the KB article, MS wants you to contact them for the hotfix. The link sends you to a ridiculous barrage of screens, ULAs and wizards.
I wish there was an XP SP3 today to fix these annoying issues.
As for the tool tip bug, Microsoft acknowledge it's a bug and their resolution is logging off and logging back on. Nice. -

Lets not turn this into a XP vs. Vista argument because both need major work to be done. I don't blame Microsoft for focusing on their big money spinner (Vista) but at the same time, they shouldn't be ignoring XP simply for the sake of the almighty dollar is it harms their reputation for providing long term support even after the shipment of a new product.

- You guys who are always slamming XP installs + 100 + updates etc etc, ffs- do some research. XP comes with soem very powerful tools for slipstreaming updates into the installation, and recently, i even downloaded an ISO with all updates including WMP11, IE7 and cumulative security updates to June 2007. It wasn't that difficult, and no more hassle than downloading a six monthly update of Ubuntu or SuSE which i also do on a regular basis.
That ISO proved to be the quickest install of windows i have ever undertaken, start to finish, i.e. boot to windows logon and customisation, around an hour.

- Where did you get this ISO from? Was it Microsoft, or had someone made an ISO out of Autopatcher XP June 2007 (plus extras and DX9) that you used instead? This is exactly what I have done for my benefit and helping out friends and family who are either noobs / dial-up / both.
Any home-made patch ISO (even if from Microsoft) will be mostly ignored by those who have to manage multiple desktops in a corporate environment in favour of official Service Packs / Update Rollups that slot neatly into WSUS. -

- And MS thought they had a hard time getting anyone off W2K for XP. Darn right, they're working on it now due to XP's market strength still.

Pizza Hut recently bought some POS terminals running embedded Windows 2000 - their desktops use the same thing.
For alot of companies there needs to be alot of testing. With that being said, Microsoft need to come out with their own POS terminal software - it wouldn't be difficult to write a purpose written operating system for the sole purpose for a terminal. -

i was horrified to see that the customer service reps at my bank were using '98! they leave their monitors on at night so you can see it when you walk past the window.

- dx10 will show up i bet. they will go, oh look, we figured it out. all we had to do was add some line of text that says, allow dx10.
I still dont get how dx10 wouldnt work for xp. everything ive read just makes it seem like they are saying it wont just so vista sells. -
#6.1 Posted by NightmarE D on 31 Jul 2007 - 17:38
- It's already been proven it can run on XP. Even some Microsoft people have come out saying it could run on XP.
They're just using it to push Vista

- Dude your argument holds no ground! If they port Dx 10 for windows xp then they will b shooting themseleves on foot as DX 10 is the major attraction of gamers out there. If Dx 10 is available for Windows XP i doubt that people shall move to vista. I know i won't . It won't make sense for MS to do that. It';s insane...
-
#7.1 Posted by phantasmorph on 31 Jul 2007 - 15:30
- Yes, because there will be soooo many compelling DirectX 10-only titles. Every gamer I know is avoiding Vista like the plague, so Microsoft better start throwing around a bit more money to game companies to make Dx10-exclusive games.

That's not true at all. Most gamers are still on XP and I don't see them switching over to Vista anytime soon unless a certain game they want is DirectX 10 only. -

Bro u are right , but when the DX 10 titles start to soar into market then they will have to switch to vista. I know that tehre is no real need to switch to vista at current situation. In fact u will b sacrificing 10 to 15 % FPS while switching so it;s not worth it at the moment. But things will change when the titles begin to arrive. My original argumant was that MS doesn't benifit from porting DX 10 to Xp and so they will never do it.

How so? He only posts up what people at MS and other sources have already posted up? He RARELY makes any preditions himself. -

I think that's maybe what he was trying to say. Thurrott does nothing but take credit for news that's already been out there.
I think it's funny he's completely missed the last few bigger news stories on XP and Vista or he thought "Why bother? People know I take credit for others articles"

- IF they want SP3 out by 2008 they better start beta-testing it real soon. You know how long it can take to iron out all the bugs in a service pack, right?
I'm guessing mid-2008, not Q1, despite what the article says.
I was previously hearing mid-2007 for XP SP3, and we all know how well that worked out.
